Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: Those Who Walk the Dark

Part 1

The chamber breathed.

That was the first thought that crossed Lior's mind as he stood frozen near the doorway of light. The walls pulsed faintly, glowing symbols rising and falling like a slow heartbeat. The air itself hummed with restrained power.

None of that was what terrified him most.

It was the people.

Kael stood closest. He was tall and still, built like a weapon given human shape—broad shoulders held square, spine straight as iron. Ash-colored armor layered his frame, worn smooth at the edges by years of battle. His silver hair was pulled back tightly, revealing a face carved by discipline rather than age. His eyes were sharp and unblinking, the kind that measured threats before they even moved. The spear in his hand wasn't raised, but it didn't need to be. It was ready because he was.

Nyx, by contrast, looked like chaos had learned how to smile. They leaned lazily against a pillar, dark leathers clinging close to a frame built for speed, not strength. Twin daggers rested easily at their sides, handled like old friends rather than weapons. A scar sliced through one eyebrow, giving their grin a dangerous tilt. Their eyes danced constantly, amused and alert, missing nothing. Where Kael radiated control, Nyx radiated freedom—and both were equally lethal.

And then there was Seris.

Seris did not stand so much as exist. Their robed form shimmered faintly, edges blurring as though reality struggled to hold them. Light moved beneath the fabric like slow-burning embers, and where their face should have been was a hood filled with soft, drifting blue glow. The flame behind them cast no shadow, yet illuminated everything. Looking at Seris felt like staring at a reflection that did not quite match.

Lior felt exposed.

"You're staring," Nyx said lightly, tilting their head. "Rude—but understandable."

Lior blinked and forced himself to breathe. He was lean rather than broad, built for movement, for slipping through narrow spaces and avoiding attention. Dark hair fell into his eyes, catching faint starlight in uneven strands. His face belonged to twilight—unfinished, uncertain—but when he stood still, shadows lingered around him longer than they should, as if unsure whether to claim him.

"You were hiding in here," he said.

"Yes," Kael replied flatly. "Because what hunts outside does not cross sanctified ground."

"Usually," Nyx added.

Seris lifted one hand. The chamber quieted further, the hum lowering to a whisper. "You opened a sealed ruin," Seris said calmly. "Do you understand what that means?"

"No," Lior answered. "But I didn't mean to."

"That may be worse," Kael said.

Nyx snorted. "He means it is worse."

Lior clenched his fists. "Then tell me. Stop talking like I already know how this place works."

Seris studied him. The gaze felt like being seen from the inside out—not judged, but measured.

"At the Threshold," Seris said, "intent matters less than consequence."

The blue flame flared brighter. "This realm exists between realities. Most who enter do so by ritual, by contract, or by force. You did none of these."

"I followed a light," Lior said quietly.

Nyx's grin faded.

"That's not good," they murmured.

Kael's grip tightened. "No. It isn't."

Seris continued, "The lights appear when boundaries weaken—and when something reaches from the other side."

"The hunters," Lior said.

"Yes," Kael confirmed. "You announced yourself."

Lior's breath caught. "I didn't know."

"That won't stop them," Kael replied.

Nyx stepped closer, circling Lior with predatory curiosity. "You're still breathing," they said. "Still solid. That's impressive."

Lior stiffened. "People usually say hello first."

Nyx laughed. "You're funny. I like you."

Seris raised a hand. "Enough."

Nyx stopped instantly.

"That you can open sealed structures without training means your resonance is strong," Seris said. "Unstable."

"Unstable sounds bad," Lior muttered.

"It is," Kael said.

"But useful," Nyx countered.

Silence stretched.

Lior finally asked, "You said my old life is over."

Seris inclined their head. "You cannot return as you were."

Nyx's smile softened. "Yeah. None of us did."

Kael stepped forward. "If you stay, you train. You follow rules. You live."

"And if I don't?" Lior asked.

"Then you die alone."

That decided it.

"I'll stay," Lior said.

The symbols flared.

The chamber shook.

Nyx drew their daggers, grin sharp. "Guess orientation starts early."

Kael planted his spear. "Lior, stay behind us."

Seris spoke as shadows howled beyond the gates.

"No," they said. "This time, he stands with us."
