Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

While the rest of the world slept under the moon, the lower levels of the Vane Manor breathed with a life of their own. Deep beneath the dark wood library, accessible only by a private elevator that required a biometric scan of Dante's eye, lay the "Grave."

It wasn't a prison, and it wasn't a vault. It was a museum of a dying dynasty.

Dante stepped out of the elevator, his shirt unbuttoned, the emerald-green silk tie from the gala hanging loosely around his neck like a noose. The air down here was different—colder, smelling of ozone and ancient stone.

He walked past rows of glass cases. Inside were the weapons of his ancestors. A serrated blade from the 1800s used by the first Vane to carve a territory out of the docks. A gold-plated revolver used by his grandfather to execute a traitorous brother.

Dante stopped in front of a heavy iron door at the end of the hall. He stood there for a long time, the silence of the underground pressing against him. He looked down at his hands—the same hands that had broken Kael's finger hours before. They were steady. They were cold.

He opened the door.

The room inside was a medical suite, hidden away from the world. In the center, hooked up to a rhythmic, hissing ventilator, was a man who looked like a hollowed-out version of Dante.

Silas Vane. The Patriarch. The man who had taught Dante that love was a vulnerability and mercy was a death sentence.

Dante pulled up a chair, sitting in the shadows. He didn't look at his father with affection. He looked at him with the clinical detachment of a scientist observing a failed experiment.

"I went to the Gala tonight, Father," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp in the sterile room. "Kael tried to touch something of mine. I didn't kill him. Not yet. I let him live to feel the fear."

The machine hissed. Silas's eyes remained closed, his skin like parchment.

"You always said I was too emotional," Dante continued, a dark, bitter smile touching his lips. "That I had too much of Mother in me. But tonight... when I felt the bone snap under my hand... I didn't feel rage. I felt nothing. Just the cold, quiet satisfaction of order being restored."

He leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. "There's a girl here. A slum-rat. She has eyes that look like they've seen the end of the world. She's small, fragile... but she hasn't broken yet. I find myself wondering how much pressure it would take to make her soul shatter. Or if, like you, I'll just end up destroying everything I touch until I'm the only one left in the dark."

He reached out, his finger tracing a scar on his own forearm—a souvenir from a "lesson" his father had given him when he was twelve.

"The Vane blood is a poison, Father. And I can feel it thickening in my veins every day."

Dante stood up, the chair scraping harshly against the floor. He didn't say goodbye. He turned off the light, leaving the dying king in the dark, and stepped back into the elevator.

He had a kingdom to run, and a girl in his library who was starting to look like a reason to stay awake.
