Part I — Seeds of Doubt
CLANG!!
The massive alloy doors closed behind us.
Their metallic echo lingered through the gravity chamber before gradually fading into silence.
No one spoke.
No one laughed.
Even the usual confidence that surrounded the Gathering of Prodigies had disappeared.
Every prodigy walked out in silence.
Each carrying something far heavier than exhaustion.
Caelion's words.
"Purity does not mean power..."
"...it means loss of control."
"...the purer the bloodline..."
"...the closer you are to the beast."
The words refused to leave my mind.
They echoed.
Again.
And again.
Like claws scraping against stone.
The gravity chamber slowly powered down behind us.
A deep mechanical hum resonated through the walls.
MMMMMMMM...
The ancient runes covering the chamber dimmed one after another until only a faint silver glow remained.
The invisible pressure pressing upon our bodies vanished completely.
Yet...
No one relaxed.
Our muscles did.
Our minds didn't.
Without another word—
Caelion continued walking.
His black robes swayed gently with every measured step.
He neither looked back nor offered another explanation.
No reassurance.
No encouragement.
No farewell.
He simply...
Walked away.
Leaving us alone with our thoughts.
Perhaps...
That had been his final lesson.
Not every answer would be given.
Some...
Had to be found.
One by one, the prodigies dispersed.
Some returned to their assigned quarters.
Others quietly formed small groups, speaking in hushed voices.
"...Did you hear what he said about bloodline purity?"
"...My grandfather warned me about something similar..."
"...You think he's exaggerating?"
"I don't know anymore."
None of them sounded certain.
None of them sounded fearless.
For the first time since arriving at the Gathering of Prodigies...
Everyone looked their age.
Young.
Talented.
Uncertain.
A boy from the Crimson Ape Clan silently stared at his own hands as though seeing them for the first time.
A young woman from the Azure Crane Clan repeatedly clenched and unclenched her fists.
Another prodigy walked with his head lowered, completely lost in thought.
The lesson hadn't ended inside the gravity chamber.
It had merely followed us outside.
I remained where I was.
Watching.
Listening.
Thinking.
The vast corridor of the training facility gradually emptied.
Footsteps became fewer.
Voices faded.
Until...
Only silence remained.
A cool breeze drifted through the open corridor.
I barely noticed it.
My thoughts had become far louder.
"The closer you are to your bloodline..."
"...the closer you are to the beast."
Was that truly all there was to it?
Power...
In exchange for control?
Strength...
In exchange for myself?
My brows furrowed.
No.
Something didn't feel right.
If every powerful bloodline inevitably led to losing control...
How had the legendary ancestors ruled for countless ages?
How had they become kings?
How had they remained themselves?
There had to be something more.
There always was.
Then...
A memory surfaced.
Small.
Almost insignificant.
Yet impossible to ignore.
The battle against Caelion's white tiger.
The explosion.
The wound.
No...
Earlier than that.
The moment I questioned him.
"Were you trying to kill me?"
My emotions had surged.
For a brief instant...
Something inside me had answered.
Not with words.
With instinct.
My presence had changed.
The lightning beneath my skin.
The pressure surrounding my body.
The sharpness within my eyes.
It had happened before.
More than once.
Each time anger reached a certain point...
My strength seemed to rise with it.
Not dramatically.
Subtly.
Naturally.
As though something sleeping beneath the surface had opened one eye.
I slowly stopped walking.
"...No."
That wasn't normal.
At least...
It shouldn't have been.
Then another realization struck me.
Caelion.
Throughout the lesson...
His goldish-blue eyes had settled upon me again and again.
Not upon anyone else.
Me.
He had watched my eyes.
Not my cultivation.
Not my techniques.
My eyes.
And each time...
His expression had changed.
Only slightly.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
As though he had seen those changes before.
Or...
Had been expecting them.
A slow breath escaped my lips.
"He knows..."
The words were barely louder than a whisper.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to notice.
Enough to remain silent.
Enough...
To say nothing.
Which somehow unsettled me more than if he had questioned me directly.
Silence stretched throughout the corridor.
The training facility had become strangely peaceful.
Almost too peaceful.
Yet beneath that calm...
A quiet unease continued growing inside me.
Not fear.
Awareness.
The first crack didn't shatter stone.
It appeared silently.
Almost invisibly.
By the time anyone noticed...
It had already begun to spread.
I slowly lowered my gaze toward my clenched fist.
The faint scratch left by the white tiger had completely healed.
There wasn't even a scar.
Only smooth skin remained.
A reminder that some wounds disappeared from the body...
Only to remain within the mind.
Caelion had spent two days teaching us how to react.
How to survive.
How to think.
Yet...
Today's lesson had left behind something far more dangerous than pain.
A question.
One that refused to disappear.
If my bloodline possessed a will of its own...
Then one day...
Would I still be the one making my own decisions?
The thought lingered.
Quiet.
Persistent.
Like a tiny crack spreading through flawless glass.
And somewhere deep inside...
For reasons I couldn't explain...
I felt as though that crack...
Had already begun.
