Chapter 41 - Part II — Beyond Instinct

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

The gravity chamber trembled violently.

A sphere of condensed spiritual energy erupted from the white tiger's body.

Not wild.

Not unstable.

Perfectly controlled.

The explosion expanded in absolute silence—

Then—

The silence shattered.

BOOOOOOM!!!

The shockwave devoured everything within its reach.

The alloy floor cracked.

Ancient runes blazed brightly beneath the overwhelming force.

Even the crushing gravity seemed to distort.

My instincts screamed.

Every muscle in my body reacted before thought could interfere.

SWISH!!

The world blurred.

I disappeared.

Reappearing several metres away.

The explosion chased after me.

Too fast.

Too close.

BOOM!!

The edge of the shockwave struck my right arm.

Pain flared instantly.

A burning sensation spread across my skin.

I skidded backwards before planting my feet firmly against the alloy floor.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

I slowly lowered my arm.

A shallow cut stretched across my forearm.

Blood trickled down onto the black floor.

The first blood I had shed since entering the Gathering of Prodigies.

The chamber froze.

No one spoke.

Every prodigy's eyes widened.

Not because of the wound.

Because they had witnessed it.

The white-haired youth...

The one who had danced beneath two hundred times gravity...

Had been injured.

My gaze slowly lifted.

It settled upon one man.

Caelion.

He remained exactly where he had been.

Standing calmly.

Hands behind his back.

As though nothing extraordinary had happened.

Lightning flickered beneath my skin.

Tiny azure arcs danced around my fingertips.

The cool glow within my eyes intensified.

Not from anger alone.

From instinct.

From the realization that death had brushed past me.

I took one slow step forward.

The chamber echoed softly beneath my feet.

Then another.

My voice broke the silence.

Clear.

Calm.

Yet carrying an unmistakable edge.

"Were you trying..."

"...to kill me?"

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Every trainee turned toward Caelion.

No one dared breathe too loudly.

Even those who moments ago had been struggling beneath the gravity forgot their exhaustion.

They waited.

Caelion didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Instead—

He began walking.

One step.

Soft.

Measured.

Yet every footfall echoed throughout the chamber.

Tap...

Another step.

Tap...

No spiritual pressure leaked from his body.

No cultivation was released.

Yet with every step...

The atmosphere itself seemed to yield before him.

It wasn't power.

It was presence.

The kind of presence forged through countless battles.

The kind that existed naturally.

Without effort.

He stopped a few metres before me.

His goldish-blue eyes met my azure gaze.

Neither of us looked away.

For several long moments...

No one spoke.

Then—

"If that attack had killed you..."

His voice remained calm.

Steady.

"...you would never have belonged here."

His words carried no mockery.

No arrogance.

Only certainty.

A faint murmur spread among the surrounding prodigies.

Some frowned.

Others lowered their heads.

Several instinctively glanced at the dissolved remnants of their own defeated constructs.

They finally understood.

Every one of them...

Could have died.

Caelion slowly turned.

His gaze swept across the entire chamber.

"You all believed..."

"...that your opponents existed to lose."

"No."

"They existed..."

"...to teach."

He raised one hand.

The countless motes of spiritual energy left behind by the destroyed constructs slowly gathered before him.

Floating.

Silent.

"Tell me."

His eyes returned to me.

"When did you believe you had won?"

I remained silent.

There was no need to answer.

He already knew.

"The moment..."

"...you drove your hand through its core."

His fingers slowly closed.

The floating particles compressed into a tiny sphere.

"You struck."

"You confirmed the hit."

"And then..."

"You relaxed."

His hand clenched.

The sphere collapsed.

POP.

It vanished.

"In battle..."

"Certainty is poison."

He looked at every trainee in turn.

"A wounded enemy may regenerate."

"A dying enemy may take you with it."

"A defeated enemy may still possess one final strike."

His voice grew colder.

"Many cultivators survive impossible battles..."

"...only to die after believing they had already won."

The words settled heavily within the chamber.

No one argued.

No one could.

Because everyone had seen it.

I had landed the perfect strike.

Yet...

I had nearly lost my life.

Caelion looked at me once more.

"Your attack was flawless."

"So was your mistake."

Silence.

My fingers slowly tightened.

He wasn't wrong.

I had assumed.

For one brief moment...

I had stopped hunting.

And the prey had become the hunter.

A faint smile appeared on Caelion's face.

Small.

Almost imperceptible.

"Good."

Confusion flashed across several faces.

Good?

He had nearly watched me die.

"As long as the lesson costs blood..."

"...and not your life..."

"It is cheap."

No one spoke.

The chamber remained deathly still.

Then—

The ancient runes beneath our feet blazed once more.

MMMMMMMM...

The gravity array awakened again.

Heavier.

Denser.

The pressure descended without warning.

BOOOOM!!

Several prodigies collapsed immediately.

Knees slammed into the alloy floor.

Some fell flat.

Others struggled desperately to remain standing.

The gravity...

Had increased.

I felt my own muscles tighten.

Every fibre of my body screamed beneath the added burden.

Yet...

Something had changed.

My breathing remained calm.

Steady.

My body adjusted faster than before.

The pressure no longer felt unfamiliar.

It felt...

Understandable.

Interesting...

Very interesting.

Across from me—

Caelion noticed.

His goldish-blue eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.

For the briefest instant...

They drifted away from my face.

Toward my eyes.

The azure glow.

The faint lightning dancing beneath my skin.

Recognition flickered within his gaze.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

As though he had expected this moment.

Yet...

He asked nothing.

Said nothing.

Instead—

He slowly turned his back.

"Stand."

One word.

Simple.

Absolute.

"No matter..."

"...how heavy the burden becomes..."

"If you fall..."

"...you die."

Silence swallowed the chamber once more.

One by one...

The remaining prodigies gritted their teeth and forced themselves upright.

Some trembled violently.

Others coughed blood.

No one wanted to be the first to fall again.

I remained standing.

My azure eyes never left Caelion's back.

Somewhere deep within...

Something stirred.

Not power.

Not cultivation.

Something older.

Something instinctive.

Something...

Waiting.
