Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10 — Cracks Beneath the Steel

Morning arrived in the secret room without sunlight.

There were no windows. No natural light.Only cold white lamps that stayed on endlessly, as if time itself wasn't allowed to move freely here.

Aleena woke up on the small chair beside Arlo's emergency bed.

Her neck was stiff. Her eyes burned. But the moment she was fully awake, the first thing she did—

Was look at him.

Arlo was still there.

His breathing was steadier. His face no longer as pale as the night before. But his body was still covered in wounds, bandages wrapping his chest and shoulders.

Aleena let out a long breath.

"Thank God…"

She stood up slowly, about to get some water.

Then—

"Sleeping there isn't comfortable."

Aleena froze.

The voice was low.Rough.But clear.

She turned quickly.

Arlo's eyes were open.

Fully conscious.

"You're… awake?" Aleena's voice trembled.

Arlo blinked once, then looked straight at her.

"If I were dead, you'd be a lot more dramatic."

Aleena stepped closer without realizing it.

"You're an idiot."

Arlo raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Is that your way of saying you care?"

Aleena went quiet.

Her face heated up.

"I almost lost you," she said softly—honest without meaning to be.

The room fell silent.

Arlo's gaze softened.

"I'm here," he replied quietly."Still."

Raka Wakes Up… the Raka Way

On the other side of the room—

"OW!"

Raka suddenly yelled.

Naomi, who had fallen asleep sitting up, jolted awake.

"What?! What hurts?!"

"My leg!"

"Which one?!"

"All of them!"

Naomi stared at him flatly.

"You're alive. Be grateful."

Raka groaned.

"I dreamed I was chased by a cow holding a knife."

Aleena glanced over.

"…what?"

Naomi sighed deeply.

"The meds are still working."

Words Left Unspoken

Aleena sat back down beside Arlo.

"The city's calmer," she said quietly."Business is running again. But our people are still moving underground."

Arlo nodded.

"Good."

"You should rest."

"I've rested enough."

Aleena shot him a sharp look.

"You almost died."

Arlo turned, looking at her for a long moment.

"And I'll almost die again," he said calmly."If necessary."

Aleena clenched her fists.

"You talk like your life is cheap."

Arlo gave a faint, bitter smile.

"My life is expensive. That's why I can't disappear carelessly."

Aleena's breath caught.

The words sounded cold—

But the meaning was heavy.

Naomi and Raka — Small Cracks

Naomi changed the bandage on Raka's thigh.

Her movements were quick.Professional.

"Be gentle," Raka complained.

"If I'm gentle, you complain more."

Raka looked at her.

"You came out yesterday," he said suddenly.

Naomi stopped.

"I'm Aleena's assistant."

"You almost died."

"So did you."

Raka smiled faintly.

"Guess we're even."

Naomi didn't reply.

But her hands trembled slightly.

A Faceless Threat

Arlo closed his eyes briefly.

"He stopped on purpose," he said.

Aleena turned.

"Who?"

"That mysterious figure," Arlo answered."He didn't lose. He's waiting."

A chill crawled down Aleena's spine.

"Waiting for what?"

Arlo opened his eyes.

"For us to lower our guard."

Inside the secret room—

Wounds began to dry.Breathing stabilized. But the calm was false.

Because somewhere out there—

Someone was planning the next move.

And this time—

The target wasn't companies.

Not gangs.

But their hearts.

The secret room no longer felt like just a hiding place.

It had become a confessional space—where masks began to crack, and emotions buried too long started pushing to the surface.

Aleena sat on the floor, leaning against the cold wall. Her arms wrapped around her knees. Her eyes stared ahead, unfocused.

"Arlo," she said softly, almost to herself."Are you ever afraid?"

Arlo lay still for a long moment.

No answer.

Aleena thought he was too tired.

Then—

"Every day."

She turned.

Arlo's gaze was fixed on the ceiling.Calm.But his voice wasn't.

"I'm afraid that if I stop moving," he continued,"everything I protect will collapse."

Aleena swallowed hard.

"You don't have to be a shield all the time."

Arlo exhaled slowly.

"I chose to be one," he said."Because I know what it feels like to lose."

The words hung heavy in the air.

Aleena's chest tightened.

"Lose who?"

Arlo closed his eyes.

"Everyone I didn't save in time."

Silence.

Thick.Crushing.

Aleena moved closer without thinking. She sat beside the bed, the distance between them gone.

"You're not God," she said gently."You're human."

Arlo gave a soundless laugh.

"Humans aren't supposed to live like I do."

Aleena shook her head.

"But you're still alive."

She looked straight at him.

"And now… you're not alone."

Naomi and Raka — Tension That Can't Be Denied

In the corner—

Naomi checked the small monitor connected to the external cameras.

"No suspicious movement," she reported.

Raka, half-reclined, snorted.

"That's exactly why I'm uneasy."

Naomi glanced at him.

"You're always paranoid."

"Because I'm usually right."

Naomi paused.

"You're stubborn."

Raka smirked.

"And you care."

She snapped her head toward him.

"Don't go there."

Raka raised his hands slightly.

"Okay. Sorry."

After a few seconds—

"Naom."

"What now?"

"If you were a second late yesterday…"

Naomi clenched her jaw.

"I don't want to hear the rest."

Raka watched her closely.

"Scared?"

Naomi turned away.

"Yes."

The answer came too fast.

Too honest.

An Attack Without Blood

Arlo suddenly pushed himself up slightly, wincing.

"Something's wrong," he said.

Aleena stood immediately.

"What? Your wounds?"

"No."

Arlo looked at Naomi.

"East sector cameras."

Naomi stared at the screen.

Her expression hardened.

"They're not attacking."

Aleena frowned.

"Then what?"

Naomi pointed.

"All small companies around the west district—their stocks just crashed simultaneously."

Arlo clenched his fist.

"Economic warfare."

Aleena went still.

"So… my parents…"

"They weren't the end target," Arlo said quietly."They were a warning."

Aleena covered her mouth.

Tears fell silently.

"I'm not ready," she whispered."I never asked for this."

Arlo tried to rise—but pain stopped him.

Aleena moved first.

Her hands trembled as they touched his bandages.

"You know what scares me the most?" she said softly."I'm starting to get used to the violence."

Arlo met her gaze.

"That's not weakness."

"It's terrifying," Aleena replied."I'm afraid of losing myself."

Arlo slowly lifted his hand—touching her wrist.

The contact was light.

But everything stopped.

"You're still Aleena," he said firmly."And I'll make sure you stay that way."

Aleena closed her eyes.

For the first time—

She let herself believe.

Behind the Curtain — The Game Begins

Elsewhere—

The mysterious figure smiled at the data charts.

"Good," he murmured."They're starting to feel safe."

He shut the screen off.

"Now… let's break something more fragile."

Inside the secret room—

No new blood was spilled. No guns were fired.

But the wounds now lay deep inside.

And the next war—

Wouldn't be won by weapons.

The silence in the underground room shattered.

WEEEEEEENG— WEEEEEEENG—

Emergency alarms screamed relentlessly.

Red lights flashed violently, reflecting off steel walls and faces that instantly tensed.

Aleena jumped to her feet.

"What is that?!"

Naomi sprinted to the monitor panel.

Her face went pale within seconds.

"They're inside," she said fast."Not one or two—dozens."

Raka tried to stand despite his injuries.

"Armed?"

Naomi swallowed.

"Fully. And huge."

Arlo straightened, pain tearing through his wounds.

"How many security layers breached?"

"All upper levels," Naomi answered."They're making chaos… tearing the house apart."

Aleena covered her mouth.

"It's bait…"

Before anyone could respond—

A heavy impact shook the ceiling.

Then—

A foreign voice echoed through a loudspeaker outside.

A Voice from Hell

"Attention," the voice said calmly.Too calm.

Aleena froze.

She didn't recognize it—but every word felt like a blade.

"This entire city… belongs to me now."

Naomi increased the volume.

"All major companies have fallen," the voice continued."Through legal means. And necessary force."

Raka clenched his fists.

"Bastard."

"Everyone working for you," the voice went on,"in the light or the dark—has been arrested… or fled."

Aleena's knees weakened.

"Your external gathering facility?"A soft laugh."Already under our control."

Silence.

Suffocating.

"Only two companies remain," the voice said."Arlo's. And Aleena's."

Aleena turned to Arlo.

His face was hard.Cold.But his eyes were calculating.

The Heaviest Decision

"He's not here for war," Arlo said quietly."He's here to dismantle us slowly."

Aleena swallowed.

"What do we do?"

Arlo closed his eyes briefly.

The decision—wasn't just business.

"Freeze everything."

Aleena gasped.

"What?"

"My company," Arlo said firmly."All assets. All access. All data."

Naomi immediately understood.

"If frozen, nothing can be touched."

Arlo turned to Aleena.

"You have to do the same."

Aleena clutched her chest.

"It's my parents' legacy…"

"If you don't," Arlo said—firm yet gentle,"he'll twist it into a weapon against you."

Aleena hesitated.

Then nodded.

"I'll do it."

Shutting Down the World They Built

Screens lit up one by one.Codes layered.Access terminated.Accounts locked.

Aleena watched with trembling eyes.

"It feels like burying everything."

Arlo stood beside her.

"Better to bury it temporarily," he said,"than let it be used to kill you."

For the first time—

She didn't argue.

Escape

"We're out of time," Naomi said urgently."They'll find this door."

"Forest route," Arlo ordered.

A steel door slid open.

A dark tunnel awaited.

Aleena looked back—at her house.

The place she almost died.

The place where feelings began to grow.

Naomi grabbed her hand.

"Move."

They entered.

The door sealed shut.

And the world they knew—

Was officially left behind.

Into the Forest

A long drive.

Night.Light rain.Dirt roads.

The black vehicle moved without headlights.

Aleena sat in the back, hugging herself.

"We're running," she whispered.

Arlo stared ahead.

"We're surviving."

Raka chuckled weakly.

"Expensive version of running."

Naomi scoffed.

"Shut up."

Aleena smiled faintly.

The House in the Woods

Iron gates opened slowly.

Dense forest surrounded a massive house.

Hidden.Silent.Safe—for now.

"I didn't build this place for vacations," Arlo said.

Naomi glanced around.

"Scouts?"

"Still active," Arlo replied."Silent. Invisible."

Aleena looked at the house.

"So this is where we rebuild?"

Arlo turned to her.

"This is where we stop running."

Back in the city—

The mysterious man smiled in satisfaction.

"Freezing assets?" he murmured."Smart choice."

He turned to another screen.

"Now… let's attack something that can't be frozen."
