Nancy sealed the container with the focused deliberateness of someone who had spent three days working with something that required focused deliberateness and had not stopped treating it that way for a single moment.

She looked at David.

"The antibody," she said. "I have to be specific about what it is and what it isn't."

"Go ahead," David said.

Nancy looked at the workstation screen, where the analysis was displayed — the specific genomic data, the ACE2 binding mechanism, the antibody response profile from the tissue sample David had provided.

"The composite agent binds through the ACE2 receptor," she said. "ACE2 is part of the renin-angiotensin system — one of the most ancient and conserved biological stress-response mechanisms in terrestrial animal biology. It's present on the surface of cells across virtually every tissue type in the human body." She paused. "The reason this makes the agent so comprehensive is that the ACE2 pathway is not something you can simply block or knock out. It's too fundamental. Interfering with it systemically produces consequences worse than the agent itself." She paused. "So a traditional prophylactic approach — a vaccine that prevents infection by blocking the receptor — isn't viable."

"The antibody you developed," David said.

"Works against the agent's current form," Nancy said. "The specific protein configuration that produces the infectious agent in the sealed container right now. The antibody neutralizes that configuration effectively." She paused. "The problem is that the agent's genetic architecture includes an adaptive evolution mechanism. Every thirty minutes of active propagation produces a mutation event. The mutation is directed toward immune evasion — the agent evolves specifically to escape the antibody that was effective thirty minutes ago." She looked at David. "The antibody from the tissue sample you provided keeps pace with the evolution. The sample produces adaptive antibodies within the same thirty-minute window." She paused. "But the sample has a limited viability window outside the host — approximately six hours."

David looked at the sealed container.

"Which means," he said, "the antibody is effective for thirty minutes, requires fresh extraction from the source material for each subsequent window, and the source material needs to remain active to produce the adaptive response."

"Yes," Nancy said. "The practical implication is that the application window for this agent — if it's going to be used in a contained way that doesn't produce an extinction-level event — is thirty minutes. During that window, the antibody from the current extraction is effective. After that window, anyone without fresh antibody is no longer protected against the mutated form." She paused. "And the agent continues evolving."

"Peters," David said.

"He reached the same conclusion independently before I did," Nancy said. "His background in filovirus environmental persistence — he's spent twenty years studying how viral agents behave when they can't be easily inactivated. He said the ACE2 targeting combined with the adaptive evolution mechanism is the most elegant and terrifying design he's ever seen." She paused. "He said Amherst was operating at a level that should not have been possible given the available research infrastructure."

"He had the Illuminati Society's resources," David said. "And fifteen years."

Nancy was quiet for a moment.

"The deployment window," she said. "For whatever purpose this is being used for. Thirty minutes from deployment to completed mission. After that, the agent has mutated beyond the current antibody's protection. Anyone still in the agent's viable zone after that window is—"

"I understand," David said.

"The high-temperature degradation parameter that Peters built in," Nancy said. "The agent becomes inactive above 44.8 degrees Celsius ambient temperature. In the right geographic context, that's the natural kill switch." She paused. "But thirty minutes is the operational window. That's a hard limit."

"I know," David said. He looked at the container. "One more question. The tissue sample I provided — the antibody production mechanism. If the source of that tissue were present in the agent's viable zone, would the source be protected by their own antibody production?"

Nancy looked at him.

She looked at the analysis.

She said: "The immune response in the tissue sample produces antibodies at a rate that appears to keep pace with the agent's evolution cycle. If the source of the sample is present and their immune system is responding in real time rather than from an extracted sample — yes. The source appears to be naturally producing the adaptive response as a baseline biological function rather than as an induced response." She paused. "We've never seen anything like it. The tissue's immune cell production rate is significantly above the normal human range. Whatever produces that — it's not something we can replicate or transfer."

"Understood," David said.

He picked up the sealed container and the cold storage unit containing the current antibody extraction.

He looked at Nancy.

"The poliovirus vaccine," he said.

Nancy looked at him.

"You used the tissue sample to develop a vaccine for the modified poliovirus," David said. "You submitted it under your name and Peters's name to the CDC."

Nancy was quiet.

"I know," David said. "I'm not raising it as a criticism. The children in New York needed that vaccine. You did the right thing with what you had." He paused. "How far along is the distribution?"

"The CDC confirmed the testing yesterday morning," Nancy said. "Production scale-up is underway. First distribution to acute-case hospitals was yesterday evening." She paused. "The cases that are past the neurological damage threshold — the damage that's already occurred doesn't reverse. But the forward progression stops." She paused. "And the antibody from the tissue sample produced an immune profile that may have applications for the secondary inflammatory damage in the acute cases. I've been building the model. I have a collaboration at Georgetown who can run the BSL-2 stage of the research."

"Send the request for the case data to Harold's relay," David said. "The Machine will compile what you need from the CDC database."

Nancy nodded.

She looked at David with the expression of someone who has been sitting with something for a long time and has decided to say it.

"Whoever provided that tissue sample," she said.

David said nothing.

"They're going to go into the agent's viable zone," she said. "With a thirty-minute window and a natural immune response that keeps pace with the evolution. And they're going to do whatever needs to be done in that window." She paused. "That's what the container and the cold storage together mean."

"Yes," David said.

"Is it worth it?" she said.

David thought about the Elder — about the institutional authority that issued John's excommunication, the Bowery King's judgment, the Adjudicator's assignment. About the twelve remaining seats and what they would continue to produce if the office above them remained functional and undisturbed.

"The people who built this specific agent intended it as an extinction event," David said. "We're using it as a surgical instrument. In a defined geographic area. With a built-in environmental kill switch and a thirty-minute operational window." He paused. "Yes. It's worth it."

Nancy looked at him.

"I won't ask anything else," she said.

"Thank you," David said. "For everything. All of it."

David carried the container and the cold storage unit to the Continental's ninth floor.

John was on the bed looking at photographs on his phone when David came in.

The photographs were of Helen — the specific collection of someone who had carried the same images for years and looked at them in the specific way that people looked at things they needed to see regularly to keep some part of themselves functional.

He sat up when David came in.

He looked at the sealed container and the cold storage unit.

He said: "It's time."

"Almost," David said. He set the container on the table. He sat down in the chair. "I need to tell you the full picture before you decide anything."

John looked at him.

David told him.

All of it — the composite agent, the ACE2 binding mechanism, the adaptive evolution, the thirty-minute window, the antibody's limitations, what the deployment would require and what the thirty-minute constraint meant operationally.

He told him about the autonomous delivery system that 47 was designing — the system that would place the agent in the target area before John arrived, so that John's approach through the conventional pathway matched what the Elder's network expected to see.

He told him about the thermal degradation parameter — that beyond the immediate target geography, the agent would degrade naturally in the desert's ambient heat.

He told him about the tissue sample and what it meant for the person who had provided it.

John listened.

When David finished, John was quiet for a long time.

He looked at the sealed container.

He looked at the photographs on his phone.

He said: "The Elder's office issued the bounty."

"Yes," David said.

"The Adjudicator came because of the Elder's office," John said.

"Yes," David said.

"The bounty doesn't expire unless the office expires," John said.

"Or unless the person currently holding the office is no longer in a position to renew it," David said.

John looked at the photographs.

He said: "Helen always said the things that needed to be done were usually clear. The difficulty was in doing them, not in identifying them."

David said nothing.

"The approach," John said. "Through the Sahara. The Elder's network monitors it. I reach the point where they decide I'm close enough to death to be worth the effort of contact." He paused. "What's the timing?"

"The autonomous delivery needs to precede your approach by approximately four hours," David said. "The agent is viable in the morning and evening temperature windows. If you approach in the early morning — the agent is already in position, you're approaching through the normal pathway, the Elder's people make contact in the standard window." He paused. "Everything looks exactly like what they expect to see. A broken man in the desert seeking the Elder's mercy."

"And I'm not broken," John said.

"No," David said. "But you'll look it. You've done harder things."

John was quiet.

"The thirty minutes," he said.

"Yes," David said. "From the moment the Elder is in the viable zone. Thirty minutes."

John nodded once.

He looked at Andy, who was at the foot of the bed with the specific composed patience Andy brought to all of John's moments of significant decision.

He looked at the photographs.

He looked at David.

"When?" he said.

"After Wednesday," David said. "The Fisk situation resolves Wednesday night. After that, the New York picture is different and we can move resources to the preparation." He paused. "Jaax's modification is complete. 47 is designing the autonomous delivery system tonight. The logistics for the Sahara approach need three to four days to arrange." He paused. "One week from today, if Wednesday goes correctly."

John absorbed this.

"One week," he said.

"One week," David confirmed.

John looked at the sealed container for a long moment.

Then he looked at David with the specific quality he brought to things he'd decided — not performed resolution, the actual thing.

"Then we finish Wednesday first," he said.

"Yes," David said.

He picked up the container and the cold storage unit.

He stood.

He looked at John.

"The retirement," David said. "The world it needs to exist in. We're building it."

John looked at the photographs on his phone.

He said: "I know."

David went to the door.

Behind him, John looked at Helen's face for a long moment.

Then he put the phone in his pocket and stood.

Andy stood with him.

"Let's see what this city looks like from the roof," John said to no one specifically.

He went up the stairs.
