Night Eleven's envelope says: The original Nights Eleven and Twelve were about physical tension and control and the specific frustration of wanting something and being made to wait for it. For the new version, Night Eleven is about the wanting that doesn't have urgency in it. The wanting that can wait not because it's being withheld but because it has nowhere to go. It's just there. Permanent. Steady as the kitchen table.

She reads this on a Wednesday morning. He's already at the barn office. She reads it with her coffee and the financial section and the specific frown she sometimes gets over numbers that don't add up, and she thinks about permanent wanting. The kind without urgency.

She texts him.

Night Eleven is my favorite so far.

He texts back in three minutes.

It took the longest to write.
