Chapter 25 Part 2 Mothers' Despair and OR Outcome
As for Yun Huijie's place in my life… I couldn't define it.
Did I secretly want something to happen to him? Maybe.
But reason told me: given his age, health, the location of the wounds, and being in his own hospital, he was likely to survive. In front of Jiabi, I knew exactly how I should present myself.
And seeing the state she was in, I felt a flicker of guilt myself.
In the middle of my call with Wang Linsheng, hurried footsteps sounded; an anxious woman ran up.
"Jia… Jiabi! What happened to Huijie?"
"Teacher… Jie's still in surgery! I don't know!"
"What happened? The hospital said he was stabbed? How?"
Yun's mother had arrived. I wrapped up my call and went to meet her.
"Auntie, please calm down. I'm a friend of Huijie and Miss Lin. Dr. Yun was stabbed from behind and is currently in surgery."
"How bad is it? Tell me!"
"Please try to stay calm. I saw him lose a lot of blood as they pushed him in. I called to him, but he didn't respond."
Yun's mother went pale and almost fainted; the officer at her side caught her. She also broke down in tears.
"Huijie! Please, don't let anything happen to you! You're my only son! Your dad pretends he doesn't care, but he's always been proud of you please, nothing can happen!"
"Teacher, don't worry. Jie will be all right. He'll pull through," Jiabi said, trying to comfort her even as she sobbed herself.
After crying a while, Yun's mother suddenly remembered something and dialed a number.
"Why is it you again, old man?! … What, you're still in surgery? … I'm telling you, your son is hurt! Stop what you're doing and get to Central Hospital right now! Hurry!"
"Teacher, don't worry. Uncle will be here soon; just sit with me." Jiabi kept hold of her hand, and the two women cried together on the bench.
Yiyi walked over, her eyes helpless. I whispered, "Sorry, Yiyi. I want to wait for news on Huijie's surgery."
"Me too. I don't feel right leaving now. My dad can wait a bit."
A hospital director came over with a group, heads lowered in apology. The incident had happened in their hospital, and with Yun's father's status in the field, they were deeply embarrassed.
"Thank you, leaders. On behalf of Huijie and his father, I thank you. But I have to ask as his mother how could this happen in your hospital? I trusted you with my son! Who did this?"
The administrators had no answer. They exchanged looks with the police; one officer stepped up.
"Ma'am, the attacker is in custody. We'll interrogate him thoroughly and give everyone an explanation."
"Who? Who sent him?" she pressed.
The officer hesitated. "We're still confirming his identity. As for whether someone's behind him, we can't say yet."
It was the truth, but useless. The police could only say that much. Yun's mother's emotions spun out of control:
"I know who! Lin Xiong sent him! That old bastard! He's always hated my Huijie for stealing his daughter! If my son dies, I'll haunt him!"
The scene blew up. Everyone, myself included, froze. Jiabi and the policewoman rushed to calm her and eased her back to the bench. The hospital leaders mumbled more apologies and quietly withdrew.
"Jia… you poor child, with a father like that… how tragic," the mother moaned.
Jiabi could barely reply. "Teacher, please don't say that. My dad… isn't that kind of person."
I'd never seen her tone so evasive or her eyes so shifty. It must have been hard to hear. The tangle between the Lin and Yun families was not simple.
"Jia, you're still young and innocent… Living with a father like that is hard. If anything happens to my son… I'll go find him," the mother said, clutching her head and crying.
"Teacher, let's just wait. The operation should be over soon. Rest a bit."
She slumped on the bench, staring up at the ceiling.
Jiabi stood, walked to the OR door, and stared at it.
"Miss Lin, you…" I began.
"I'm fine, Yayi. And thank you for you and Yiyi." She didn't look back.
"Don't say that. Huijie is my friend too."
Her gaze, fixed on the doors, slowly softened.
"Huijie started his internship here at this hospital. We've made so many memories here. Every time I came, I was happy always the wanton slut sneaking in for a tryst. But only today…
"This hospital has witnessed our beginning, our struggles, our love, and our lovemaking. I hope it'll also witness our forever just not yet, please."
That wave of tenderness clenched my chest. Thankfully, the OR doors finally swung open.
The chief surgeon came out; everyone surged forward.
"Dr. Yun took two stab wounds to the back. One was fairly deep and caused severe blood loss and shock, but we stopped the bleeding in time. After emergency transfusion, his heart rate and blood pressure are stable, and the wounds are closed. There's no sign of major organ damage. He should regain consciousness by tomorrow morning. We'll send him to ICU for observation first; when he's out of danger, he can move to a general ward."
The women sighed in relief, pouring out thanks as Yun Huijie was wheeled out pale, bandaged, trailing several IV lines.
"Jie! Wake up!"
"Son, I'm here! Please wake up!"
"The doctors will take good care of him he's their colleague."
"Thank you…"
"Thank you, doctor. I'll properly thank you later."
"Miss Lin, that's unnecessary! I have other patients; please go handle the admission paperwork."
"Thank you… Who would do this to you, Jie…"
I watched as Jiabi and Yun's mother followed the bed away. Seeing that no one had died, the police turned to ask the surgeon for details.
Yiyi came over. "Are you going with them?"
I shook my head. "There's no need. Let's go see your father."
"Okay, let's go. Yun's a good man how could this happen to him?"
"Yiyi, do you think this was my fault?"
"This isn't your fault it's the attacker's…"
"Right. It has nothing to do with me or Xunxing. It's all the lunatic's fault…"
But seeing Yiyi frown, I added, "Still, for Jiabi's sake, our company bears some responsibility… I'll bring it up at the next meeting."
"Don't act righteous for my sake. I'm not forcing you; what do I care about your company. Talk to me about my dad."
"All right. How is your father, really?"
"He's… okay. When you see him, just don't mention my praying at the Gen Grounds."
"Got it. I understand."
