If he should make a full shield, then his power would be spread, and with his calculations, it's not something that will hold against Kaelthorn's attack. After all, the Imprisonment he's using is stronger on the inside than out.

All of these barely took two seconds, and yet, Vale felt a chill sweep through his body. Time seemed a frozen thing as a sense of danger made his spine tingle.
Kaelthorn wasn't going for a frontal attack! He was already behind Vale!
He reacted as fast as he could, twisting his body away, but it did little as two lengths of bright light plunged into his body. Sharpness carved into his flesh, one cutting from the shoulder while another came from below and stuck into his spine bones as he finally managed to get away, but the damage had already been done.
