Akira was pinned.

Shoji and Jurota had his torso locked. Honenuki's softened ground had swallowed him to his knees. Ibara's vines were wrapping around his arms. Kendo, Kirishima, and Tetsutetsu were seconds from impact.

He looked around, assessing the situation, then he smiled.

They're smart, he thought. Momo planned well.

Let's see how far they can go.

Blue flames flickered around his body. The Class 1-B students around him flinched. Jurota's grip loosened for a fraction of a second, and Honenuki's hands trembled. Kendo slowed her charge, eyes narrowing.

"HIS BLUE FLAMES ARE HARMLESS!!" Shoji yelled. "HOLD YOUR POSITIONS!! DON'T LET GO!!"

Akira raised an eyebrow.

Welp. That didn't work.

The blue flames around his body condensed. They pulled inward, compressing, then shot outward in three spears of solidified blue flame, each one a metre long, each one aimed at Ibara Shiozaki.

The vines were the real threat. Without them, he could muscle his way out of everything else. Take out the vine user, and the restraints fall apart.

Ibara's eyes went wide. Her hands were locked in a prayer position, every ounce of her concentration poured into the vines restraining Akira. She couldn't dodge, but people were protecting her.

The first spear closed the distance in half a second.

A shockwave ripped through the air and shattered it mid-flight.

Izuku Midoriya stood twenty metres to the right, his index finger still extended, smoking from the flick that had just channelled One For All into a concentrated air blast.

He was breathing hard. That flick had cost him; his finger was already swelling. But the spear was gone.

The second spear came from a different angle, arcing toward Ibara from the left.

But a shadow intercepted it.

Fumikage Tokoyami stood at the edge of the clearing. Dark Shadow surged forward, its massive clawed hand catching the blue flame spear and crushing it into sparks.

"You shall not pass," Tokoyami said, because of course he did.

"THERE'S A THIRD!!" Jurota yelled from behind Akira, his beast-like eyes tracking the final spear as it shot upward, arced over the battlefield, and came diving down toward Ibara from above.

Izuku and Tokoyami looked up. It was too far; neither of them could reach it in time.

Something zoomed across the sky.

BOOM.

A boy intercepted the third spear at the last possible second. A kick connected with the flame construct and kicked it apart, scattering blue embers across the clearing.

Tenya Iida dangled in the air for a single, glorious moment, Hatsume's jetpack roaring on his back, his leg still extended from the kick.

"I CAN'T ALLOW YOU TO DO THAT, SHUZENJI!!!!!!!!" Iida yelled, his voice carrying across the entire battlefield with authority.

Down below, Izuku's eyes went wide with admiration. "WOW, IIDA!! THAT WAS AMAZING!!"

Near the treeline, Hatsume Mei was jumping up and down, fists pumping. "YES!! YES!! I KNEW MY BABY WOULD WORK PERFECTLY!! LOOK AT HIM FLY!! THAT'S MY FINEST CREATION UP THERE!!"

As if her words were a curse, the jetpack glitched. A plume of black smoke puffed from the left exhaust port.

Then it died.

Iida hung in the air for one more second, the jetpack silent, gravity remembering he existed.

"Oh no," he said.

He fell.

"MY BABY!!" Hatsume screamed.

"WHAT ABOUT ME?!" Iida yelled as he dived toward the ground.

From the bushes near the landing zone, a small figure burst out. Mineta ripped a fistful of purple sticky balls from his head and hurled them at the ground directly beneath Iida. The balls hit the scorched earth and expanded on impact, forming a thick, bouncy cushion of sticky purple spheres.

Iida hit the cushion and bounced. Once. Then twice. He came to rest on his back, staring at the sky, alive and mostly uninjured.

"Thank you, Mineta," Iida said, still catching his breath.

Mineta looked down at him with a scowl. "Tch. Why is it never a girl?"

Iida blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I SAID, WHY IS IT NEVER A CUTE GIRL FALLING INTO MY ARMS?! I SET UP A PERFECTLY ROMANTIC RESCUE, AND IT'S WASTED ON YOU!! WHERE'S THE JUSTICE?!"

"That is incredibly inappropriate, Mineta."

"YOUR FACE IS INCREAIBLY INAPPROPRIATE!!" (BAHAHAHHAHA🤣🤣)

Back in the clearing, Akira had watched the entire sequence play out. Three spears, all intercepts. Izuku's flick, Tokoyami's shadow, Iida's kick. Perfectly timed. Perfectly placed.

So Momo planned for that too, he thought. She assigned defenders to Ibara specifically. She knew I'd target the vine user first.

He looked at the vines still wrapped around his arms and sighed.

"This is enough."

Blue flames exploded.

Not the gentle pulse from before. This was raw output — a cyclone of blue fire that erupted from every inch of his body simultaneously, spiralling upward into a tornado that stretched thirty metres into the sky.

Shoji yelled through the roar. "HOLD!! HE'S ABOUT TO-"

He couldn't finish.

BOOM.

The tornado detonated outward. A shockwave of blue flame expanded in every direction, and every student within twenty metres was thrown backward. Shoji flew, so did Jurota. Honenuki was ripped from the ground. Kendo tumbled across the ash. Kirishima and Tetsutetsu, even with their hardened bodies, skidded backward and crashed into the remaining ice formations.

Ibara's vines snapped — not cut, not burned, but torn apart by the sheer force of the blast. She stumbled backward, catching herself on a tree root, staring at the clearing through the smoke.

In the stadium, the crowd gasped as the smoke began to clear.

Present Mic leaned forward. "What's happening in there?! The cameras can barely see through the-"

The smoke parted.

Where Akira had been standing, there was now something else entirely.

A massive bird of blue flame. It stood in the centre of the clearing, its wings folded against its body, its head raised toward the sky.

The stadium erupted.

"WHAT IS THAT?!"

"IT'S A BIRD!! A GIANT FIRE BIRD!!"

"THE PHOENIX!! HE ACTUALLY BECAME A PHOENIX!!"

Present Mic was beyond words. He was just making sounds.

"YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! A PHOENIX!! AKIRA SHUZENJI HAS TRANSFORMED INTO A LITERAL PHOENIX OF BLUE FLAME!! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING ANYMORE, BUT I LOVE IT!!"

The students who had been thrown back scrambled to their feet. Bakugo and Todoroki, who had been recovering from the earlier fight, were already moving. The rest of the wave two fighters regrouped.

"RUSH HIM AGAIN!!" Kendo yelled, her fists already re-enlarged. "HE'S STILL STUCK IN THE GROUND!! DON'T LET HIM-"

Akira flapped his wings.

The ground beneath the phoenix shattered. Akira shot upward, tearing free from everything that had held him, rising into the sky above the clearing like a comet.

He hung there for a moment, the phoenix form blazing against the sky, looking down at the battlefield.

Then he turned and dove straight toward the group.

Todoroki reacted first. He slammed both hands on the ground and launched everything he had — a barrage of massive ice chunks, each one the size of a car, fired upward at the diving phoenix like anti-air guns.

Akira didn't dodge. He rammed straight through them. Ice shattered against the phoenix construct. He tore through chunk after chunk, the blue flames melting a path through Todoroki's barrage like a meteor tearing through clouds.

But the ice had done its job. It had slowed him down by a fraction of a second, and that fraction was all that was needed.

Ochaco Uraraka touched Bakugo's back.

"GOOOO!" she yelled.

Bakugo's weight vanished. He floated upward — and then fired every explosion he had downward, launching himself like a human cannonball directly into the path of Akira's dive.

He was positioned perfectly. Right between Akira and the ground. A human roadblock made of nitroglycerin sweat and pure rage.

Bakugo pulled both hands back.

"TAKE THIS, YOU FLAMING CHICKEN!!!!!"

He brought his palms together and detonated everything in a single, concentrated blast aimed directly at the phoenix's chest.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

The explosion was massive. The shockwave shattered ice formations across the clearing. The camera drones were blown backward. Present Mic ducked behind his desk.

"BAKUGO WITH THE BIGGEST EXPLOSION WE'VE SEEN TODAY!! POINT BLANK INTO AKIRA'S PHOENIX FORM!!"

Smoke filled the sky. For three seconds, nobody could see anything.

Then the smoke cleared.

Sadly for the students the phoenix was still there. Its chest was damaged. The blue flames had been scattered across the torso, leaving gaps in the construct where Akira's body was visible beneath.

But even as the crowd watched, the flames regenerated. They flowed back into place, filling the gaps, rebuilding the construct from the inside out. Within seconds, the phoenix looked as if it had never been hit.

Akira looked at Bakugo, who was floating in the air, weightless, arms still smoking from the blast.

"Nice try," Akira said.

Bakugo grinned, even as Uraraka's quirk wore off and gravity pulled him back down. "Yeah? Good luck dealing with that."

Akira frowned. "Dealing with wha-"

CRASH.

Behind him, a massive ice chunk was punched aside. Izuku Midoriya stood there with his fist smoking, One For All crackling across his arm. And behind Izuku, revealed by the destroyed ice wall, was Momo.

She was standing on a raised platform of created metal. In front of her was a weapon.

It was a long three metres of reinforced barrel, with magnetic coils wrapping its length in precise intervals, a targeting system mounted on top connected to her visor. It looked like something that belonged on a warship, not in a school tournament.

A railgun.

Behind Momo, two figures stood with their hands pressed against metal rods that fed directly into the weapon's power system.

Kaminari Denki on the left, electricity already arcing across his body, his hair standing on end, every volt he could produce being channelled into the rod.

Neito Monoma on the right, having copied Kaminari's quirk moments before, his own body crackling with stolen lightning, pushing everything he had into the second rod.

Two sources of electricity. One weapon. Maximum charge.

The railgun hummed as the magnetic coils glowed white-hot. The air around the barrel began to vibrate.

A display on the weapon's side flickered.

<>

Momo looked up at Akira through her visor. The targeting system locked on. A red reticle centered on the phoenix's chest.

Monoma yelled from behind the weapon, electricity screaming from his body. "YOU'RE GOING DOWN, SYMBOL OF FEAR!!!!!"

Kaminari was beyond words. His eyes were rolled back, his body on autopilot, every neuron firing everything into the rod. "WHEEEEYYYY!!"

Momo smiled and winked at him.

"Smile, handsome."

Click.
