In the Land of Grass, a meticulously crafted conspiracy was racing toward its final, bloody conclusion.

"Still not enough." Obito's gaze turned ice-cold as it swept over the Iwa-nin Mogera. "Everyone who hurt Rin… everyone who forced her into this… they all have to die."

His figure vanished like a ghost.

"Damn it, don't look down on me!" Mogera roared, his long blade spinning in a desperate, airtight net as he charged.

The two men passed each other—truly passed through each other.

Obito's body slipped straight through Mogera's, effortlessly dodging the blade storm. In the same heartbeat he spun, drove his kunai backward, and opened half of Mogera's neck in a clean, merciless arc.

It happened so fast the enemy barely had time to register what was happening.

Kakashi lay crumpled in the nearby grass, badly wounded, deep gashes visible through torn clothing. Blood loss had blurred his vision to nothing but hazy shapes. He thought he saw Obito unleash godlike power, cutting down every last Iwa-nin. If that was real… it would be a miracle.

His eyes rolled back. He slipped into unconsciousness.

"Rin…" Obito's voice was hoarse as he appeared beside her fallen body. He dropped to his knees, carefully avoiding the fatal wound in her chest, and gathered the blood-soaked girl into his arms.

Ice-cold tears mixed with the blood on his face and fell onto her pale, lifeless cheek.

"I'm sorry, Rin. It was my fault. I was arrogant. I lost the kunai. I failed to protect you."

"I'm the one who… who…"

His voice broke completely, thick with grief and self-loathing. The hollow ache of total loss swallowed him whole.

"Ghh—!"

Chakra exhaustion, the backlash from forcing his Mangekyō awake and overusing its power, and the soul-crushing weight of grief crashed into him at once. His vision swam. The world tilted. Still clutching Rin, Obito pitched forward and collapsed.

Wind whispered through the blood-stained trees, stirring red-stained leaves like a quiet dirge for the dead.

---

A short time earlier.

At Kannabi Bridge, Minato's hands never stopped moving.

He unsealed scroll after scroll, slapping explosive tags onto the bridge supports with mechanical precision. The work was simple but mind-numbing, and the pressure of time weighed on him.

He had already rigged the seventh pillar. Only the final, central main support remained.

Just as he flashed to the shadow between the seventh and final pillar, a faint chakra ripple brushed his senses.

Not wind. Not water. The distinct vibration of an alarm barrier being triggered.

Who would have thought the Iwa-nin had hidden a barrier on the main pillar? Their earlier success had made them careless.

"Enemy attack! Under the main pillar!"

The warning cut through the air.

Three Iwa teams burst from cover at once—one from the shadows beneath the bridge deck, one from a hidden observation post, and one from a maintenance ladder on the pillar itself.

These were the last defenders left on the bridge.

The lead Iwa jonin, a burly man with a scar across his face, reacted fastest. He slammed his palms to the ground.

Earth Release: Rock Pillar Spears.

Jagged stone spikes erupted from the bridge surface and the pillar itself, trying to impale Minato from every angle.

The two chunin with him moved in perfect sync. One flung a storm of shuriken to seal off the air. The other finished his seals.

Earth Release: Earth Dragon Bullet.

A massive mud dragon roared to life and spat a barrage of hardened projectiles straight at Minato.

The attack came fast and vicious, boxing him in with layered, overlapping fire.

"Tch."

Minato's eyes sharpened, all warmth gone. In the split second before the spikes and projectiles hit, his body vanished.

The rock spears stabbed empty air. The dragon's bullets slammed into the pillar and shattered. Shuriken clattered uselessly against stone.

"Behind you!" the scarred jonin shouted, twisting and hurling kunai backward on pure instinct.

But Minato was already there.

He materialized behind the chunin still maintaining the Earth Dragon Bullet and drove a tri-pronged kunai straight through the man's throat. Blood sprayed in a hot arc.

The jonin's eyes widened in shock. His jutsu collapsed as he crumpled.

"Damn it!" the scarred jonin snarled, rage and grief twisting his face. He charged without hesitation, hands flying through seals even as he ran.

Earth Release: Hardening Technique – Rock Fist.

His arms swelled with thick stone armor. His fists became massive, hammer-like weapons that whistled through the air as he swung at Minato with everything he had.

The last chunin recovered enough to throw another volley of shuriken, trying to pin Minato down.

Minato's response was pure speed and precision.

He vanished again. When he reappeared, he was already behind the scarred jonin. A glowing blue Rasengan spun to life in his palm and slammed into the man's armored back.

The rock armor shattered like brittle glass. The spiraling chakra tore through flesh and bone in a brutal spiral wound.

The jonin let out a short, agonized scream before the impact hurled him into the pillar. He slid down and went still.

The final chunin barely had time to react before Minato's blade opened his throat.

The first wave of Iwa defenders was gone in under a minute.

"Shit—it's the Yellow Flash! Everyone be careful!"

The warning came too late. The other two Iwa teams that rushed in met the same fate. Golden flashes cut them down one after another with ruthless efficiency.

One Iwa-nin, hands shaking, managed to pull a signal flare. He yanked the pin and hurled it skyward with the last of his strength.

Minato's eyes narrowed. "A flare—!"

He flashed forward. His kunai opened the man's throat before the flare could even arc fully upward. The body dropped. The flare clattered uselessly to the ground, unlit.

But it was already too late.

A bright yellow signal flare streaked into the sky from somewhere else on the bridge, bursting in a brilliant bloom visible for miles.

Minato's heart sank. Reinforcements were coming. Fast.

He didn't have time to breathe, let alone mourn. His eyes locked on the final, untouched central pillar.

He had to finish this.

Golden light flickered as he pushed his Flying Thunder God to the limit, slapping the last explosive tags onto the main support with frantic speed. His hands flew through the activation seals the instant the final tag was placed.

"Detonate!"

The bridge erupted in a chain of thunderous explosions. Reinforced stone and steel screamed and shattered. The massive structure tilted, groaned, and finally collapsed in a deafening roar, sending tons of debris plunging into the canyon below.

Minato vanished in a final golden flash just as the last section gave way.

Behind him, Kannabi Bridge was gone.

Mission complete.

On the way back, Minato moved at top speed, the success of the mission still humming in his veins. The bridge was destroyed. Rock's supply lines were cut. If Leaf pressed the advantage now, they could deal a crushing blow.

But the good feeling didn't last.

When he reached the rendezvous point, only Choza's team was waiting. There was no sign of Kakashi, Obito, or Rin.

"Choza, where are Kakashi and the others?"

"Minato-sensei, how did the mission go?"

They spoke at the same time. Minato's stomach twisted at the absence of his other students.

He forced a calm expression. "The bridge is down. Rock's reinforcements are going to have a very bad time."

Choza's face lit up for a moment before he noticed Minato's tension. "They should be here soon. Their route was longer than ours."

Minato's worry only grew. If the bridge was already destroyed and they still weren't back, something had gone wrong.

He gripped the special Flying Thunder God kunai he had given Kakashi's team.

"I'm going to check on them. Wait here."

Before Choza could respond, Minato vanished in a flash of golden light.
