Chapter 137 - Book Two: Chapter Thirty Seven

The big gun captain called for wood blocks and planks. His crew lifted their gun from its front moorings and stacked planks and blocks beneath it. The barrel pointed upwards at a sharp angle. His team loaded the big gun and adjusted its direction several times. Finally, they seemed satisfied with its aim. The big gun was fired, and to all who watched, the world seemed to slow as the shot rose into the sky. Then it reached its apex, its arc pointed downward, and it screamed like a banshee as it fell to earth. The three mages froze as it plummeted down at them; then it struck about 4 feet behind them. The explosion sent the three mages to their knees. The fire mage died from a concussion, and Hao, the water mage, collapsed unconscious. But just as the explosion was happening, the black mage vanished in a puff of inky smoke.

As the Westerosi went from stunned silence with breaths held to a roar of relief, another 20000 Zonians charged from the shattered woodland. It was the last charge like this they could accomplish, for only a few royal guards and some auxiliaries were left after this. As the Zonians charged out into big gun range, a new sound happened. It was coming from behind the Zonian lines and gaining strength. The front of the Zonians' last charge kept moving, but the middle and the back parts stopped and turned back towards that sound.

The Bravvos mercenary camp had received another 2000 reinforcements just before the first Zonian charge after dark. When the ladies in black came out of their tent, it was almost dawn; it was almost as if the Zonian mages' part in the battle had activated them. The Bravvos team could see the flashes, lightning, and flames through the trees and hear the cries of battle. And now the women in black were going to counter those mages. The tallest woman in black looked at the troops and pointed towards a large tent at the rear of the enemy lines. A few Zonian guards and some servants could be seen in the open around the tent in the dawn's light. The Bravvos captain smiled widely at the men around him, saying, "There's nothing for it, lads, into the breach we go!" And 8000 men charged at the rear of the enemy lines.

If Jun Wei had been in his tent when a strange wind whipped it high into the air, he would have died under the charging Westerosi troops. But he had moved forward with most of his honor guard to witness this last charge. When he turned back at the sound of battle behind him, he screamed, "Zonians defend me!!!" The back of the charge stopped as they heard the sound and turned back towards their leader's commands. The Zonian regular mages were in the very back of the charge and arrived near Jun Wei the fastest.

Seeing a wall of mages coming at them, the Bravvos captain called a halt to the advance and had all archers begin peppering the enemy casters with arrows. A sudden change in air pressure made him look towards the women in black, 4 of them were casting some complex spell. A great wall of something that looked like dark clouds formed above their heads and moved out toward the Zonians. It wailed and moaned as if alive. When it reached the group around Jun Wei, it fell to the ground. It sounded like a huge spinning grindstone was chewing at the ground. There was nothing where it had been, no trees, no stones, no bodies or mages. But then a crackling sound came from the center, and as the dust cleared, there was a half dome of solid electricity flashing over Jun Wei, his great mages, and a few of his closest guards. The Zonian mage in black quickly cast a spell, and giant thorns appeared in the air and shot towards the women in black. Thea stepped forward and raised her arms. A golden shield shimmered in the air in front of the women in black. All the thorns but one disintegrated as they struck the shield.

In the tree-kin fortress, cheering had ceased when the Zonian charge started, and then that roaring sound caught them all off guard. Hassan and Bronn looked at each other, clearly aware that their enemy was being attacked from behind. Bronn shouted above all the noise, "Charge the enemy in the field!" Both gates opened, and Westerosi troops and archers began charging the 5000 or so Zonian troops that were left in the front of the wave attacking. The Zonians pulled up short, sensing a change in the flow of this battle. They looked around and realized 2/3s of their charge was no longer behind them. They hesitated, and that was all it took for the wave of Westerosi to smash into them. The Westerosi cavalry was first out of the gate and cut through the Zonian scattered line like a scythe through grass. 7000 Westerosi troops hit their flanks and chopped them down with archers feathering the straggling Zonians. It felt good for the Westerosi to no longer be hunkered down behind walls, to be free at last to snuff the enemy superiority out in the open. No one in the tree-kin fortress charge had any idea what was happening in the woods, though, even if they could see that a huge circle of grey was there where trees and enemy had once stood. They just understood that help had come.
