Chapter 103 - Chapter 100 Jump Start

A/N: I woke up to check the updates on the fic, and I was speechless when I saw that it had over 1 million views. I can't say anything other than thank you to everyone who gave this fic a chance, and that little by little my writing has improved thanks to your comments and suggestions for the story.

On the scoreboard hanging above the center of the United Center court, a tight 81-77 lead in favor of the Kansas Jayhawks could be read, with barely three minutes and twenty seconds remaining in the final period of the night's opening matchup. In the broadcast booth, Tom Hart and Jon Sundvold leaned forward over their table, fully aware that they were witnessing an instant classic between two of the country's most prestigious programs.

"This has turned into a battle of titans between two of the elite freshmen in this recruiting class," Tom Hart commented, his voice charged with adrenaline as the cameras cut to Jabari Parker wiping sweat from his forehead during a timeout. "Parker has had a dream night in his homecoming, but Wiggins is refusing to let him steal the spotlight in these final minutes."

"That's right, Tom, and what we're seeing right now is the definition of a generational talent duel," Jon Sundvold added, quickly scanning his stat sheet. "Wiggins has scored the bulk of his points in this second half, and it's clear he understands exactly what the moment demands. Every time Duke has tried to make a run, he has provided an immediate answer."

While the Jayhawks regrouped at their bench following the timeout called by the Kansas coaching staff, the broadcast cameras briefly focused on a specific section of the stands reserved for special guests, where a small group had just taken their seats amidst the general roar of the crowd.

"And wow, we can't fail to mention who just arrived in the stands on this side of the court," Tom Hart said with a noticeable lift in his voice as production confirmed the identity of the newcomers. "It looks like Derrick Rose decided to bring his family tonight to witness the season's first Champions Classic live."

"And he didn't come alone, Tom," Sundvold added with a chuckle, pointing toward the screen. "Right beside him, you can see Jimmy Butler. From what I understand, Rose invited him out to clear his head a bit after the intense opening weeks of the season with the Bulls."

Derrick settled into his seat with his wife beside him, while his two young children playfully ran through the nearby aisles before a security guard politely asked them to take their places. Jimmy, dressed in casual clothes and a cap that partially obscured his face, sat next to his friend with a relaxed smile, completely detached from the high stakes that usually accompanied his game nights with the Bulls.

"Man, you needed this more than you admit," Derrick told Jimmy with a laugh, giving him a friendly nudge on the shoulder as he watched the action unfold on the hardwood.

"Maybe," Jimmy responded with a crooked smile, leaning back in his seat. "But don't think I forgot what happened when we ran into those Kentucky freshmen a few hours ago."

"That's exactly why we're staying for the second game," Derrick laughed, pointing toward the scoreboard which still reflected the fierce battle between Kansas and Duke. "I want to see with my own eyes if that center is really as good as I remember."

On the court, Andrew Wiggins caught a pass in the right corner after a late defensive rotation from Duke. Without a moment's hesitation, he elevated over his defender, burying a step-back jumper that snapped cleanly through the net, extending the Kansas lead to four with just ninety seconds left on the clock.

"What a move by Wiggins!" Tom Hart exclaimed, rising slightly from his seat in the excitement of the moment. "That kind of shot, at that juncture of the game, is what separates special players from the rest."

"And look at Parker's reaction at the other end of the floor," Sundvold added, as the cameras focused on the Duke forward briefly arguing with one of the officials after picking up a foul that would cost him his fifth personal. "This is precisely what Kansas needed at this crucial juncture of the match."

Barely seconds later, Wiggins caught a long pass in transition and soared to throw down a spectacular dunk before an astonished crowd, while Parker sat helplessly on the Duke bench, having fouled out of the game.

"This one is over, Jon!" Tom Hart shouted over the roar of the crowd. "Wiggins just iced this game with the kind of poise few freshmen display on a stage of this magnitude."

"Absolutely, Tom," Sundvold responded with a satisfied smile. "Tonight will be remembered as the moment Andrew Wiggins announced to the entire world that he is ready to claim his spot as one of the premier players in all of college basketball."

While the clock ticked down through the final seconds of the game, deep within the underbelly of the United Center, head coach John Calipari gathered his players into a tight circle inside the visitors' locker room, fully aware that in just a few minutes it would be their turn to take the floor against Michigan State.

"Listen to me closely," Calipari began in a firm, commanding voice, locking eyes with each of his players. "I know a lot of you are anxious about playing on a stage like this, and that is perfectly fine. But I want you to remember something incredibly important tonight."

The players maintained absolute silence, giving their undivided attention to their coach's words ahead of the most significant game of their young college careers.

"Michigan State is a veteran ball club, packed with guys who have been through high-pressure situations in previous years," Calipari continued, crossing his arms over his chest. "But we have something they don't, and that's the freedom of knowing we have absolutely nothing to lose tonight."

"Aaron," Calipari said, turning his gaze directly toward the young prospect standing in one of the corners, "you're going to have your hands full with Payne all night, and it's going to be the toughest challenge you've faced in your career so far. I trust you're going to rise to the occasion."

"I'm ready, coach," Aaron responded with determination, holding Calipari's gaze without a single hint of hesitation.

"Harrison twins, Julius," the coach continued, now addressing his other key young pieces, "don't play scared of making mistakes tonight. All I ask is that you play with the exact same intensity and confidence that brought you to Kentucky in the first place."

The rest of the squad nodded in silence, absorbing every word from their coach as the distant roar of the crowd in the arena served as a constant reminder that the night's first game was drawing to a close.

"Go out there and show the whole country why we are the number one team in the nation," Calipari finalized, clapping his hands sharply to initiate the team's final pre-game routine.

Before the group dispersed toward the tunnel, assistant coach Orlando Antigua briefly stepped up to Aaron, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Don't let the bright lights distract you, just play your game," Antigua told him in a calm, steady voice, looking him dead in the eye. "What you did in those first two games wasn't a fluke; it was the result of hard work. Go out there and prove it again."

"That's the plan," Aaron responded with a faint smile, feeling Antigua's words completely settle the remaining traces of nervousness in his chest.

Meanwhile, across social media, anticipation for the nightcap was reaching a boiling point among hoops fans nationwide, who had already begun flooding timelines with commentary on the impending clash between Kentucky and Michigan State.

These comments joined thousands of similar posts circulating within minutes, further fueling the frenzy surrounding a matchup that promised to dictate, at least symbolically, who deserved the top spot in the national rankings during the opening weeks of the season.

The final buzzer of the opening game reverberated through the arena, sealing Kansas's victory over Duke with a final score of 94 to 83, capping off a contest that had kept the fans on the edge of their seats until the very last tick.

"An absolutely spectacular game to open the night," Tom Hart commented as the cameras captured both teams heading back to their respective locker rooms under a wave of applause. "But now, we've arrived at the moment everyone has been waiting for since this doubleheader was announced."

"That's right, Tom. The teams are already prepping to take the floor in just a matter of minutes," Sundvold responded, adjusting his glasses as he verified the starting lineups confirmed by both coaching staffs. "Kentucky versus Michigan State—two programs steeped in rich winning traditions, and a group of freshmen about to face the ultimate test of their young college careers."

In the tunnels connecting the locker rooms to the main floor, the players from both squads began to line up, the roar of the crowd surging in intensity as the moment for the official introductions approached.

Derrick leaned in slightly toward Jimmy, his eyes locked on the tunnel from which the Kentucky players would soon emerge.

"There comes your next nightmare, man," he said with a teasing smirk, reminding him of the play Aaron had pulled on him weeks prior during that impromptu workout.

"It's going to be different this time," Jimmy shot back with a confident grin, crossing his arms as he closely monitored the tunnel.

The United Center lights dimmed to pitch black, giving way to a localized display of pyrotechnics and visual effects that signaled the teams' entrance onto the court. The arena announcer's voice boomed over the PA system, introducing the starters for Kentucky and Michigan State one by one to a deafening ovation from over twenty thousand spectators.

Aaron walked out toward the center circle alongside his teammates, adrenaline surging through every fiber of his being as he locked eyes with Adreian Payne, who glared back with a stern, focused expression from across the floor.

The head official stepped into the center of the circle, holding the rock high as both big men dropped into a slight crouch, ready to contest the opening tip-off that would officially launch the biggest game of Aaron's young college career, played under the watchful eyes of thousands of fans holding their collective breath for the very first clash between the two titans.
