Aaron was in his room looking at himself in the mirror with a smile of discomfort on his face as he watched himself trying to tie the tie around his neck, which was poorly knotted with one side longer than the other.
"This is very frustrating," Aaron thought as he tried the knot again, this time more calmly, only to end up with his fingers stuck around the knot. "Dammit," he couldn't help but curse while he tried to get his fingers out of the knot, which were gradually beginning to go numb from the lack of blood circulation.
Hearing the commotion, Melissa opened the door to her son's room, poking her head in while trying to hold back a laugh at her son, who was having trouble tied a simple tie knot.
Despite him being someone very mature and focused for his age, moments like this were what Melissa treasured most, in which she could see that her son was still a teenager.
"Do you need help with that?" having seen enough, Melissa thought it was time to help her son or he wouldn't leave on time.
"I just need to get my fingers out and..." Aaron said, but before he could finish his sentence, Melissa had already approached and grabbed both ends of the tie to then begin making the knot with ease and mastery.
"And done," Melissa exclaimed, finishing adjusting the knot while she saw her masterpiece in the mirror.
Aaron spent a few minutes admiring himself in the mirror with the suit on, which did nothing but highlight his muscles and his straight posture thanks to his years of basketball training.
"You look handsome," Melissa couldn't help but say while she was behind Aaron admiring her son, who would soon have to leave her nest.
When Melissa heard that her son would go to university in another state several kilometers away, an indescribable sadness sprouted within her at the thought that she would no longer be able to see her son as often as she did now.
She knew that her son's dream was to one day play at a professional level in the NBA and she did not doubt that he would achieve it; the showcase full of trophies and the news reports talking about him did nothing but confirm it.
But as the moment when Aaron would leave arrived, Melissa couldn't help but let out a tear or two in her room, not wanting Aaron to see her in that state.
She knew that if her son saw her like that, he might change his mind and choose to study closer to home, and she didn't want to be the one to interfere with his career, which was why she always appeared smiling to him and supported his decision.
"I feel... uncomfortable," Aaron said, looking closely at the suit, snapping Melissa out of her thoughts as she saw Aaron trying to adjust the blazer and the shirt to look for more mobility.
Looking for a suit was also something complicated since it was not common to find one for a 7ft person, let alone a rental one, which was why Aaron, Melissa, and Paola spent weeks looking all over Queens for a store that had one.
Finally, they found one that came close to Aaron's build but still fit him slightly tight, broadening his defined muscles even more under the fabric of the suit.
"Just think that it will only be for a few hours," Melissa told him with a smile while she looked at her son with maternal pride.
"About that... after the dance, I'm going to sleep at Drew's house," Aaron told her calmly while he still adjusted the jacket and rubbed an non-existent wrinkle.
"And why is that?" Melissa asked seriously.
"Well, he lives close to the school and the party ends very late," Aaron explained calmly, to which Melissa thought it was logical and nodded.
"So when is Drew passing by with the limousine?" Melissa asked, as she knew that Drew's parents had rented a limo that would take them to the party.
"Good question," Aaron said as he picked up his phone that was on his desk and wrote a message to Drew asking him when he would pass by for him, to be answered immediately by Drew saying he was 10 minutes from his house.
"They are close," he said, then went out to the living room followed immediately by Melissa behind him.
"But look at this heartthrob," Paola said in Spanish while she fed Mia, who was sitting in her high chair and began to squeal, extending her hands full of food in Aaron's direction, hoping he would carry her.
"No, no, no, we don't want to stain Aaron's suit, isn't that right princess?" Paola said in a high-pitched voice while planting a loud kiss on the baby's cheek.
"We must take a photo," Melissa said while she took her phone and passed it to Paola so she could take a photo of mother and son, which Melissa planned to set as her wallpaper from now on.
"Come here too, aunt," Aaron said while Paola approached with Mia in her arms, passing the cell phone to Aaron, who changed the camera to the front one while he extended his arm to take a selfie with the people who were the most important in his life.
"We look good," Paola said, looking closely at the photo.
While everyone discussed that, Aaron's phone vibrated in his pocket with a message from Drew saying they were downstairs.
At the moment of going down, followed by his mother and his aunt, they were greeted by the sight of a long white limousine with a Drew who was smiling from the sunroof. "Get in," Drew told him with a smile while the driver approached the passenger door and opened it for Aaron to enter.
Saying goodbye, Aaron immediately got inside the limousine.
Once inside, he couldn't help but notice how the interior was lit by soft lights and in a corner was— "Incredible, right?" asked Drew, who had sat back down while instinctively putting his arm around Sam, who leaned against his chest.
"Yes," was the only word Aaron could say while he admired the entire interior and the limousine began to move through the streets of Queens in the direction of Hannah's house to pick her up and then go to the prom. "Did you bring what I asked for?" Aaron asked Drew, who took out a corsage and passed it to Aaron, who received it and admired it.
"Thanks, friend," Aaron couldn't help but say while his eyes were fixed on the corsage.
"You're welcome. Is everything set?" Drew asked him, to which Aaron only raised his thumb in a sign of confirmation, earning an excited smile from Drew.
Both wanted to have some time alone with their respective partners, so Aaron had invented that he would go to Drew's house, and Drew said he would spend the night with a friend—risky, yes, but totally worth it.
20 minutes passed while they continued discussing universities and the calls they had received from their teams' coaches.
The reaction of the people at the moment Aaron announced he had chosen to go to the Kentucky Wildcats was overwhelming, as in that way, Kentucky officially took the number 1 spot in the ranking of signed players for this class.
Also, many experts and sports analysts began to analyze how Coach Calipari would line up the new recruits and how he would develop all of them, taking into account the veterans who were already on the team.
After this day, they would also have two months of rest before having to report to their teams at the end of August to train and meet the team before the NCAA basketball season begins in November.
Aaron already had several plans designed with his friends and especially with Hannah to spend the summer before everyone had to leave for different states to start their university lives.
Removing those thoughts from his head, Aaron immediately got out of the limousine and went straight to the door, ringing the bell while he waited for them to open, his hands firmly holding the corsage.
"Aaron, come in dear," said Hannah's mother upon seeing who it was at the door. "Hannah will be down shortly, take a seat," she said with a cordial smile while her hand pointed to the sofa on which Mr. Lawson was sitting, who did not take his eyes off the television or the sports channel.
"How are you, sir," Aaron said, being cordial, being received by a grunt in response while Boss remained lying at the feet of the sofa.
Suddenly, the sound of high heels was heard coming down the stairs, causing everyone to pay special attention to the person who was descending the steps.
The moment Aaron saw Hannah coming down the stairs, his breath was caught while his mind went blank as he admired how beautiful she was in that moment.
Hannah wore a light blue dress that did nothing but highlight her eyes, with a side slit that showed one of her legs accompanied by high black heels, which did nothing but highlight her legs and left little to the imagination.
When she finished descending the stairs, Aaron shook his head to snap out of his stupor while he approached her directly. "You look beautiful," he told her as he took the corsage out of its box and put it on her wrist, to which she nodded at this gesture.
"Pose for the photo," Mrs. Lawson suddenly said, coming out with a camera while Aaron put his arm around Hannah's waist and she rested her hands on Aaron's chest, feeling the beat of his heart.
Despite wearing 10 cm heels, Hannah barely reached Aaron's shoulder height, but despite that, both smiled with excitement. Then Aaron took the camera and took a photo of the family of 3 plus Boss, who joined the photo.
"Let us know when you get to your friend's house to sleep," Mr. Lawson told his daughter when both were already about to leave through the door, to which Hannah nodded stiffly before both went out the door.
"You know, I can't wait to take that dress off you," Aaron whispered into Hannah's ear once the door closed, causing the latter to blush at the thought.
"Control yourself," Hannah said, giving Aaron a slight elbow in the chest while he simply smiled and opened the limo door for her.
The moment both entered, they found themselves seeing a scene that neither of them wanted to witness.
Sam was sitting astride Drew while both were locked in a heated kissing session, without noticing or hearing that the door was opened.
Seeing that neither of them noticed Hannah and Aaron's presence, the latter gave a throat-clear, causing both to separate immediately while they fixed the clothes that had become wrinkled.
"This... we..." Drew was going to say until he saw Aaron signal again, this time pointing to his lip, telling him he had lipstick on his face, causing Drew to quickly start wiping it off with his hand and Sam to take out a small mirror from her bag along with a lipstick to touch up her makeup.
In that type of atmosphere, they arrived at the party venue, where they quickly forgot about the matter with the celebratory mood and the reunion with their classmates while they took photos and danced to the rhythm of the music.
Another event was also occurring: the voting for the prom king and queen, which, upon reaching nearly the end of the party, was announced by the principal.
"The prom queen is Bridget Smoak," said the principal while the spotlight immediately pointed at her as she excitedly went up to the stage and was crowned as the prom queen with a smile.
"And the prom king is..." the principal began while a drumroll was heard in the background. "Aaron Reed," the principal announced, causing the applause to sound again and Bridget's smile to widen even more.
All this had been part of her plan, as Bridget had set her eyes on Aaron a long time ago, but the latter was already with Hannah, which was why she thought her opportunity would come on this day.
After all, the prom has the tradition that both the king and queen dance together, and she was confident she could beguile Aaron in that moment, making him forget about that nerd.
But seconds passed and Aaron did not appear, nor could anyone locate him, causing an awkward silence to settle in the gym. "Uh, is Aaron Reed present?" the principal asked again while searching with his gaze for Aaron.
"Hey, have you seen Aaron?" Sam asked Drew while the latter also searched for his friend—something that wouldn't be difficult since he stands a head taller than most people. "The truth is, I haven't seen him for a while," Drew responded, scanning the place quickly.
"I don't see Hannah either," Sam said, not noticing her friend in the place.
At that, Drew tied the loose ends quickly while an ironic smile settled on his face. "I hope you're having a good time," Drew said mentally, while the principal, having no response, called the second most voted person.
On the other hand, in a motel room a few blocks from the school, Hannah and Aaron were having a clear moment of passion with their mouths fighting a battle for dominance.
"I told you I couldn't wait to take that dress off you," Aaron told her while starting the most important part of the prom for both of them.
