But Mimi still didn't say anything, her eyes never leaving mine. There was something mysterious about her gaze, an unusual concern for a child her age. Then, suddenly, Mimi looked at me with a piercing intensity, as if she was trying to figure something out.
The room was silent for a few seconds, no one saying a word. Then, Mimi suddenly spoke, her voice soft but clear. "Miss Elwyn... you won't really leave Dennis, will you?"
Her question hit me like a punch to the heart. I didn't know how to react. What was Mimi talking about? Leave Dennis? Why would she ask such a thing, especially at a time like this? I looked at her, my eyes full of tears, but I couldn't say a word.
Ms. Smith looked just as surprised by Mimi's question. "Mimi, why are you asking that?" she asked gently, trying to ease the tension. But Mimi didn't answer, she just kept staring at me, as if waiting for a confirmation, an answer directly from me.
