Chapter 85 - Volume 2, Chapter 19: The Vanguard's Strain and a Mother's Prayer

The western plaza of Marineford had transformed into a localized crucible of flying steel, heavy artillery, and clashing spiritual pressure. The initial momentum of the Elite Trainees' charge had slammed directly into the unyielding brick wall that was the Whitebeard Pirates' Division Commanders.

On the shattered ice floor, Tenjin moved like a blur of dark emerald. Honing his focus entirely on the ground, he rejected the use of his aerial flower propulsion entirely, anchoring his combat style to pure, high-velocity footwork. He coiled thick, pitch-black Dead Wood fibers tightly around his calves and thighs like compressed iron springs. With every stride, the pressurized wood properties forced a violent release of green steam from his heels, artificially accelerating his dash velocity to supersonic levels.

BOOM!

Tenjin erupted forward, his boots tearing deep trenches into the frost as he closed the distance to the 13th Division Commander, "Water Buffalo" Atmos. Tenjin drew his right fist back, the timber expanding into a heavy, reinforced battering ram. "Dead Wood Impact!"

Atmos didn't even flinch. The massive, armored giant planted his feet and swung his twin giant broadswords in a devastating, horizontal cross-slash. The blades were entirely coated in a dense, glossy layer of Armament Haki.

CLANG!

The collision rang out like a thunderclap. The sheer kinetic weight behind Atmos's swords didn't just stop Tenjin's momentum; it sent a violent shockwave traveling straight up his wooden arm, fracturing the dense fibers into a spray of black splinters. Tenjin bared his teeth in frustration, his boots skidding backward across the ice for a dozen meters before he could stabilize his footing.

"You've got some speed, Marine brat!" Atmos bellowed, his voice echoing over the roar of battle as he immediately pursued, his giant swords slicing through the air in a relentless, heavy onslaught. "But your Haki is still too shallow to break through my armor!"

To Tenjin's right, Prince Grus was having an equally brutal time. The lanky, gloomy trainee was sweating profusely, his arms extended as he manipulated vast quantities of gray clay to form a defensive wall against the 6th Division Commander, Blamenco.

SMASH!

Blamenco swung his comically massive wooden mallet, the weapon heavily infused with invisible armor pressure. The impact utterly pulverized Grus's clay wall into a useless puddle of gray mud. The shockwave caught Grus dead-on, throwing him backward as he coughed up a trace of saliva.

"Tsk... annoying," Grus muttered, adjusting his tilted Marine cap with a trembling hand as he quickly reshaped his clay into a dozen spear-like projectiles. "Our structural density is being completely overwhelmed by their raw kinetic output. Plant-boy, if you don't stop blindly rushing in, we're going to get flattened!"

"Shut up and keep molding, clay-face!" Tenjin shouted back, his hyperactive energy fueling a desperate defensive sequence.

He used his compressed Dead Wood leg springs to execute a rapid sequence of ground ducks and side-steps, barely evading a devastating downward executioner strike from Blenheim's massive cutlass. At the same time, Namur, the Fish-Man commander, lunged from his blind spot, his powerful jaws snapping shut inches from Tenjin's shoulder, tearing away a massive chunk of his Marine coat.

The dynamic was terrifyingly clear. Even with Hibari providing precise sniper cover by shooting at the commanders' blind spots, and Kujaku utilizing her brainwashed pirate slaves to create temporary distractions, the sheer, veteran prowess of the four New World commanders was too much for the rookies to handle. Tenjin and Grus were fighting past their absolute limits, their bodies accumulating deep bruises and cuts as they struggled just to stay alive on the blood-soaked ice.

Blenheim raised his massive cutlass high, the blade gleaming with a lethal black sheen as he locked his eyes onto the exhausted Tenjin. "This is the end of the line for the rookies."

He brought the blade down in a supersonic execution strike.

CLANG!

A sudden, brilliant spark of clashing steel illuminated the plaza. A single, standard-issue Marine katana had intercepted the massive cutlass dead-on, stopping the commander's high-grade Haki strike with absolute, unyielding precision.

Tenjin blinked, his eyes widening as he looked up.

Vice Admiral Momonga stood firmly in front of him, his traditional purple-striped suit unblemished, his prominent mohawk caught in the freezing wind. His hands were rock-steady on the hilt of his sword, his face a mask of absolute, stoic discipline. With a powerful, practiced flex of his arms, Momonga deflected Blenheim's cutlass upward, forcing the giant commander to step back.

"Vice Admiral Momonga!" Koby cried out from the rear, a wave of profound relief washing over him.

Momonga didn't turn his head, his sharp eyes remaining fixed entirely on the four Whitebeard commanders ahead. However, a small, subtle softening passed over his stern expression as he spoke to the green-haired boy behind him.

"You've grown quite a bit over the past ten years, Tenjin," Momonga said, his deep, disciplined voice carrying a rare tone of quiet pride. "The reckless little brat who used to trip over his own roots in the training yards is now holding the vanguard against the executioners of the New World. Gion has trained you well."

Tenjin let out a rough, breathy laugh, the frustration in his chest easing slightly as he forced his legs back into a steady stance. The Dead Wood fibers around his calves pulsed with renewed green steam. "I'm still a brat, Vice Admiral. And I'm not planning on losing here."

Prince Grus stepped up to Momonga's opposite flank, a massive, densely reinforced clay golem rising from the ice behind him. "Apologies for the mess, sir. We were just about to restructure our defensive line."

"Save your breath for the enemy," Momonga commanded smoothly, his blade entering a traditional, high-profile stance as his own Armament Haki coated the steel in an ink-black sheen. "The three of us will hold this position. Do not drop your guard for a single millisecond."

Atmos, Namur, Blenheim, and Blamenco all grinned, their weapons resetting into offensive postures as they recognized the high-tier threat before them. The atmosphere became suffocatingly dense as the three Marines and four Emperors' commanders prepared to collide in a cinematic explosion of martial prowess.

Thousands of miles away from the cataclysmic slaughter of Marineford, the world was entirely quiet.

Deep within the tranquil, isolated territory of Hakkuro Village, the horrific roars of cannons and the shattering vibrations of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit were nothing more than a distant, abstract concept. The small, peaceful village was nestled amidst rolling green hills and ancient stone structures, completely detached from the grand currents of the Great Pirate Era. Because of its remote location and lack of geopolitical significance, the village did not possess a single visual Transponder Snail. They had no way to access the live broadcast being shown at the Sabaody Archipelago. They were completely, utterly in the dark.

Inside a modest, wooden-framed house near the village square, Makima sat at her rustic kitchen table. Her hands, usually so steady and warm, were tightly clenched around a cold porcelain cup of tea, her knuckles white from the pressure. Her long hair fell softly over her shoulders, but her face was pale, her eyes fixed blankly on the wooden surface of the table.

The silence of the house was suffocating. She knew what day it was. She knew that across the ocean, the World Government and the strongest pirate crew on earth were tearing each other to pieces, and she knew her only son. Her hyperactive, reckless, beautiful Tenjin was standing right in the center of that meat grinder.

"Makima-san."

A soft, comforting voice broke the silence. Ousen, a gentle and respected elder of the village, stepped into the kitchen, carrying a fresh tray of warm medicinal herbs. Behind her, the towering, broad-shouldered frame of Bigback Holmes followed closely. The massive man had to duck his head just to clear the low doorway, his kind eyes filled with a deep, solemn empathy as he looked at the stressed mother.

Holmes pulled out a heavy wooden chair, the legs scraping softly against the floorboards as he sat down beside Makima. He placed a massive, calloused hand gently near her trembling fingers.

"You need to breathe, Makima," Holmes spoke, his voice a deep, soothing rumble that felt like a protective shield against the anxiety in the room. "Tenjin is a strong boy. More than anyone, you know the kind of resilience that runs through his veins. He isn't the type to fall easily, no matter how harsh the storm gets."

Ousen nodded gently, setting the tray down as she placed a warm cloth over Makima's hands. "Holmes is right, dear. That boy has been defying expectations since the day he learned to walk. He has the spirit of a forest. Unyielding, deep-rooted, and capable of weathering any winter. The Marines wouldn't have given him that captain's coat if he weren't capable of standing on his own two feet."

Makima let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders drooping slightly as the words of her companions slowly penetrated her panic. She looked up at Holmes, her eyes glassy with unshed tears.

"I know..." Makima whispered, her voice cracking with the raw, agonizing weight of a mother's love. "I know he is strong. I know he has Gion and the others with him. But he is still my little boy. Every time I close my eyes, I just see him scraping his knees in the village square, laughing off the pain. The thought of him out there... in a war where even giants are falling... it scares me to death, Holmes."

Holmes offered a quiet, understanding nod, his expression resolute. "It's a mother's right to worry. But have faith in the roots you gave him, Makima. Right now, wherever he is on that ocean, he is fighting to come back home to you. We just have to be here waiting for him when he does."

Makima closed her eyes, clutching the warm cloth tightly against her chest as she uttered a silent, desperate prayer into the quiet air of the village, sending her heart across the vast sea toward the frozen bay of Marineford.
