Chapter 35 : Backed Into a Corner
[Teller-Morrow Automotive — July 22, 2008, 11:00 AM]
The black SUVs didn't come.
A week passed, then two. No Stahl sightings, no federal vehicles lurking at the edge of the lot. The constant pressure that had defined the past months simply... stopped.
Unser confirmed it over beers at the Hairy Dog.
"ATF scaled back local presence." He sipped his whiskey, looking tired but satisfied. "Your lawyer's complaints made them nervous. Nobody wants an OPR investigation on their record."
"She's not gone."
"No. But she's lying low." He set down his glass. "Enjoy it while it lasts, Cole. These things are cycles. She'll be back eventually—but for now, you've got breathing room."
The club celebrated cautiously. Drinks at the clubhouse, relaxed shoulders, the particular relief of pressure released. Even Clay seemed lighter, though his eyes still tracked me with calculation I'd learned to recognize.
I didn't celebrate.
Stahl wasn't the type to give up. She was the type to regroup, reassess, find new angles. The legal pressure had worked—for now. But somewhere in a federal office, she was planning her next move.
Enjoy the calm. But don't trust it.

Jax found me under a Chevy.
"Got a minute?"
I slid out, wiped my hands. "What's up?"
He led me to the back of the lot, away from the other mechanics. His expression was different than usual—less guarded, more open.
"Your heads-up about Stahl." He kept his voice low. "It mattered. Bobby's legal play came from that—from you bringing it to us immediately instead of trying to handle it alone."
"Just did what anyone would do."
"No." He shook his head. "Not anyone. Most guys would've kept it quiet. Weighed their options. Maybe even considered the deal." He reached into his kutte, pulled out a thick envelope. "This is unofficial recognition. Extra cut from the last run. You earned it."
The envelope was heavy. I didn't count it—that would have been wrong somehow.
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me. You earned it." His hand clasped my shoulder. "You've been solid since you got here, Cole. The frame job counter, the Stahl situation, the way you've handled yourself—people notice. The right people."
"What does that mean?"
"It means your vote's coming up." His eyes held mine. "And you've got more support than you probably realize."

[TM Garage — 4:15 PM]
Opie found me twenty minutes later.
He stood at the edge of my workspace, massive frame casting a shadow across the concrete. For a moment, neither of us spoke.
"Heard you've been watching out for me."
I set down the wrench. "Just doing my job."
"That's not what Bobby says." Opie shifted his weight, uncomfortable with the words he was about to say. "He told me about the research. The counter-evidence. The way you pushed to clear my name when everyone else was ready to believe Stahl's frame."
"You're not a rat."
"No. But not everyone was sure about that." He extended his hand. "Thank you. For having my back when I didn't know I needed it."
I took his hand. The grip was firm, the kind of handshake that meant something between men who didn't waste words.
"That's what brothers do."
"Brothers." He held the grip a moment longer, then released. "Yeah. I guess it is."
He walked away without another word. But something had shifted between us—a wall coming down, a bridge being built.
[RELATIONSHIP UPDATE: OPIE WINSTON — TRUE FRIEND (52)]
The notification flickered. I let myself feel the weight of it.

[Opie's Backyard — July 24, 2008, 6:30 PM]
The invitation came through Opie's kids.
They'd found me at TM, tugging at my kutte, announcing that "Mom says you have to come to dinner." The command was non-negotiable in the way only children's demands could be.
Sarah and I arrived together. The backyard was small, well-kept, with a grill smoking and folding chairs arranged in a rough circle. Donna greeted us at the gate.
"Cole! Sarah! So glad you could make it."
The warmth in her voice was genuine—not the polite welcome of an obligation, but the real pleasure of a friend's arrival. She hugged Sarah, clasped my hand, ushered us toward the drinks cooler.
Opie manned the grill, spatula in hand, looking more relaxed than I'd ever seen him. The kids ran circles around the yard, shrieking with the particular energy of summer evening.
"Beer?" Opie held out a bottle.
"Thanks."
We stood by the grill, watching the burgers sizzle. No need for words. The silence was comfortable now—two men who'd found common ground through circumstances neither had chosen.
Sarah and Donna were deep in conversation near the back porch. Laughing about something. The sound carried across the yard, mixing with the children's shouts and the distant hum of Charming settling into evening.
This is what I saved.
The thought hit harder than expected.
Not just Donna's life. This moment. This family. This ordinary evening that wouldn't exist if the bullet had found its target.
I watched Donna laugh at something Opie said—alive, happy, present in a way that felt like a small miracle.
"You okay?" Opie was watching me.
"Yeah." I took a pull from my beer. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
About how I watched your wife die on a television screen. About how I spent weeks preventing a murder you never knew was planned. About how this moment—this ordinary, perfect moment—cost me more than you'll ever understand.
"About how good this is. All of it."
Opie followed my gaze to Donna. His expression softened.
"Yeah. It is."
We drank our beers and watched the sun set over Charming.
