Chapter 64 - Are we leaving again?

The apartment felt different. Inside the guest room, Lu Zhen lay motionless on the bed, his breathing shallow and uneven, each rise and fall of his chest fragile enough to break at any moment. The tension from earlier hadn't disappeared; it had simply shifted, stretching thinner, sharper, more suffocating.

Cai Lang sat beside him without moving. His posture appeared relaxed at a glance, but there was nothing at ease about him. One hand rested lightly against his knee while the other hung loosely at his side, fingers still, unmoving. His gaze remained fixed on Lu Zhen's face, unblinking, distant, as if he were watching something far beyond the present moment. "You're late," he said quietly, though no one had spoken to him. The words fell into the room without purpose, more thought than accusation.

Near the window, Anxin stood with his phone still in hand, his expression calm but faintly tightened beneath the surface. "He's on his way," he replied, voice steady. Cai Lang didn't respond. He didn't shift, didn't acknowledge the words, as if they hadn't reached him at all. The silence that followed stretched long enough to feel deliberate.

Lian Ziho lingered near the doorway for a moment longer before stepping out into the hallway. He exhaled slowly, rubbing the back of his neck, the unease in his chest refusing to settle. " This isn't good," he muttered under his breath, more to himself than anyone else.

In the dining area, the world felt almost normal in comparison. Jun Wei sat at the table, swinging his legs lightly as he ate, his small movements filling the space with an innocence that felt out of place against everything else. Suo Ran sat beside him, but his attention had long since drifted away from the food in front of him. His gaze lingered somewhere distant, unfocused, his thoughts circling back again and again to the sound that had broken the morning the sharp, fractured scream that still echoed faintly in his mind. It hadn't sounded like pain alone. It had carried something deeper, something colder.

Lian Ziho stepped into the room quietly, his presence barely making a sound, but Suo Ran noticed immediately. " What happened?" he asked, his voice low but direct. Lian Ziho didn't answer right away. He pulled out a chair and sat beside him, his movements calm but lacking their usual ease. His eyes flicked briefly toward Jun Wei before returning to Suo Ran, as if weighing what to say and what to leave unsaid. " He's not stable," he said after a moment. "It got worse suddenly."

Suo Ran frowned, the crease between his brows deepening. "Worse how?" he pressed, his tone tightening just slightly.

Lian Ziho rested his elbows lightly on the table, lowering his voice further. "His condition doesn't match what we saw earlier. It's not just the injuries." "That doesn't explain anything," Suo Ran replied quietly. "People don't just deteriorate like that without a reason." "I know," Lian Ziho said. "That's exactly the problem."

Jun Wei looked between them, his expression shifting into confusion as he tried to follow the conversation. "Is that uncle sick?" he asked, tilting his head slightly.

Suo Ran's expression softened instantly. He turned toward him, his voice gentler now. "Eat your food." Jun Wei blinked, clearly unsatisfied. "But.." "It's nothing you need to worry about," Suo Ran added, placing a small piece of bread onto his plate. "Finish this first."

Jun Wei hesitated, his brows knitting together, but eventually nodded. "Okay…" he said, though his eyes still lingered on them, searching for answers he wasn't being given.

Lian Ziho leaned back slightly, his gaze shifting toward Suo Ran again. " You felt it too, right?" he asked quietly. Suo Ran didn't look at him immediately. His fingers tapped faintly against the table before he answered. " Yeah."

A pause followed, heavier than either of them wanted to admit. "This isn't normal," Suo Ran added under his breath. Lian Ziho didn't disagree. Instead, he studied Suo Ran for a moment, noticing the way his posture had changed, the way his thoughts had already moved ahead of the present moment. " You're thinking about leaving, aren't you?"

Suo Ran's hand stilled. He let out a faint breath. "That obvious?" "You get quiet like this when you've already made a decision," Lian Ziho said calmly.

"I haven't decided yet," Suo Ran replied.

"That means you're close," Lian Ziho said.

Jun Wei looked up again, chewing slowly. "Leaving? Are we going home today?" he asked. Both of them paused. Suo Ran glanced at him and forced a small smile. "Finish eating." Jun Wei frowned. "You keep saying that." "Because you keep asking questions before finishing," Suo Ran replied.

Jun Wei huffed slightly but continued eating, though his attention remained split.

Lian Ziho watched him for a second before speaking again, quieter now. " He said something before he passed out." Suo Ran's gaze shifted immediately. "What?"

Lian Ziho hesitated, then said, " A name."

"What name?"

" Qiao Shiyan." The moment the name left his lips, something in the atmosphere shifted. It wasn't visible, not tangible, but it was there tightening, settling into the space between them. Suo Ran repeated it softly, testing the weight of it. "Qiao Shiyan." "Does it mean anything to you?" Lian Ziho asked.

Suo Ran shook his head slowly. "No."

"Same here," Lian Ziho said. "But it didn't sound random." Suo Ran's expression darkened slightly. "What else?"

" He said not to trust," Lian Ziho replied. "But he didn't finish." "Not to trust who?" Suo Ran asked immediately. "He didn't say."

Silence returned, heavier this time. Jun Wei chewed more slowly now, watching their expressions rather than focusing on his food. "Are you talking about something scary?" he asked. Suo Ran reached out and tapped his forehead lightly. "No." Jun Wei narrowed his eyes. "You're lying."

"I'm not," Suo Ran said calmly.

"You are," Jun Wei insisted, pouting.

Lian Ziho let out a quiet breath, a hint of amusement slipping through despite everything. "You're too observant."

Jun Wei straightened proudly. "I know."

Suo Ran shook his head faintly. "Finish eating." Jun Wei obeyed, though reluctantly.

Lian Ziho's gaze returned to Suo Ran. ".Cai Lang reacted," he said after a moment.

That caught Suo Ran's attention. " To the name?" "Yes," Lian Ziho replied. "Subtle but real." Suo Ran's brows drew together. " And he didn't explain?"

"No."

Suo Ran looked down briefly, his thoughts shifting again. He knows something.

The realization settled quietly but firmly.

Jun Wei spoke again, mouth still half full. "Is that person bad?" "Who?" Suo Ran asked.

"That Qiao person," Jun Wei said.

Suo Ran stared at him for a second, then wiped a bit of food from his cheek. "Don't worry about it." "But you're worried," Jun Wei said. Suo Ran paused. " Eat," he repeated, softer this time. Jun Wei didn't argue again.

Lian Ziho leaned back slightly. " If this is connected to Cai Lang's past, then we're already involved." Suo Ran's expression tightened. " That's exactly what I don't want."

A quiet pause followed. "You're thinking about Jun Wei," Lian Ziho said.

Suo Ran nodded faintly. " He shouldn't be around this." Jun Wei suddenly raised his hand. "I finished!" Both of them blinked.

Suo Ran looked at his plate. " You skipped half of it." "I'm full," Jun Wei said confidently.

"You said that before asking for more," Suo Ran replied. "That was different," Jun Wei insisted. Lian Ziho let out a soft breath. " He has a point." "Don't encourage him," Suo Ran said. Jun Wei smiled.

Then, after a moment, he leaned slightly closer. " Are we really going ?"

Suo Ran hesitated. " Maybe," he said.

"When ?" Jun Wei asked.

" Don't know." Suo Ran replied. Jun Wei tilted his head. "This place is quiet. We can stay here." Suo Ran's gaze flickered toward the hallway. " Not the kind of quiet we need."

Jun Wei didn't understand, but he nodded anyway. "As long as you come." Suo Ran's expression softened. " I will."

Lian Ziho watched them both, silent. Then he said quietly, " If we leave, we should do it soon." Suo Ran nodded. "I know."

"Without drawing attention," Lian Ziho added. " Feels like running again," Suo Ran murmured. " Sometimes running is the only way to stay alive," Lian Ziho replied.

Suo Ran didn't respond. But his silence said enough. Jun Wei leaned back in his chair, smiling lightly. "Can we get something sweet later?" Suo Ran looked at him, and for a brief moment, everything felt normal again.

" We'll see," he said quietly. And yet, beneath that fragile calm, something unseen continued to build slow, quiet, and already far too close.

The door opened not long after, and the sound of footsteps followed fast, purposeful, cutting cleanly through the heavy silence that had settled over the apartment. Cai Lang was already halfway to the entrance when the figure stepped inside. "Wenyao."

"Move." Gu Wenyao didn't waste a second. His gaze swept the room once, sharp and assessing, before locking onto Cai Lang. "Where is he?" cai Lang replied "Guest room." They moved immediately. Suo Ran watched them go, his fingers tightening slightly around the edge of the table. He didn't realize it until the wood pressed faintly into his skin, grounding him just enough to stay still.

Inside the room, Gu Wenyao knelt beside the bed, his hands already moving checking pulse, breathing, response each motion precise and practiced, leaving no room for hesitation. Cai Lang stood beside him, his presence still but tense beneath the surface.

"He was stable earlier," Cai Lang said.

Gu Wenyao didn't respond. Anxin watched quietly from the side, his gaze fixed, attentive. " Is he going to be alright?"

Still no answer. Seconds stretched. The silence in the room began to feel oppressive, like it was pressing inward from all sides, tightening with every passing second. Cai Lang's patience thinned, his voice lowering slightly. " Say something."

Gu Wenyao's fingers pressed once more against Lu Zhen's wrist. His expression shifted subtle, but enough to be noticed.

Then his hands stopped." I'm sorry," he said quietly. Cai Lang's gaze sharpened slightly. "What do you mean?" Gu Wenyao didn't look at him. "He's gone." Silence followed.

Anxin's eyes narrowed just slightly something calculating flickering beneath the surface. Cai Lang didn't move. Didn't react. He just looked at Lu Zhen, his gaze fixed as if refusing to accept what had just been said.

" No," he said after a moment. Calm. Too calm. "Check again." Gu Wenyao finally looked up. "I already did." "That's not enough," Cai Lang replied, his voice still controlled but lower now. "Do it again."

A faint pause followed.

Gu Wenyao held his gaze for a second longer before repeating the check pulse, breath, response. He withdrew his hand slowly. " There's no change." Cai Lang's jaw tightened slightly. "You're missing something." Gu Wenyao's tone didn't shift. "I'm not." Cai Lang's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes did something subtle, something difficult to name, yet heavy enough to be felt by everyone in the room. Anxin stepped forward slightly, his voice quiet but pointed. " He didn't die like this." Both of them glanced at him. Anxin continued, gaze steady. "He was conscious. Speaking. His condition dropped too fast." Gu Wenyao's brows drew together faintly. " I noticed that." "So?" Cai Lang asked. Gu Wenyao exhaled slowly. "So something accelerated it." " Like what?" Cai Lang pressed. Gu Wenyao didn't answer immediately. " I can't confirm anything without further examination." "That's not an answer," Cai Lang said. "It's the only one I have right now," Gu Wenyao replied calmly.

Silence settled again.

Anxin's gaze lingered on Lu Zhen for a second longer before shifting to Cai Lang. " He came here for a reason." Cai Lang didn't respond. But his posture stiffened just slightly. When they stepped back into the living room, the atmosphere shifted immediately, as if the weight of what had just happened followed them out. Lian Ziho stood up. "What happened?" Suo Ran turned as well, his gaze going straight to Cai Lang. He noticed it instantly the way Cai Lang stood, the stillness in his shoulders, the way he avoided looking at anyone. Gu Wenyao answered instead. "He didn't make it."

Lian Ziho blinked. " What?" "He was fine earlier," he said quickly, his voice rising just slightly. "He wasn't he wasn't that critical."

Gu Wenyao shook his head slightly. "Something changed internally. I can't determine the exact cause right now."

"That doesn't make sense," Lian Ziho muttered under his breath, running a hand through his hair. "People don't just drop like that." " He said something before," Suo Ran spoke suddenly. Everyone glanced at him.

Suo Ran's gaze remained steady. " Names. Warnings." Lian Ziho nodded. "Yeah. 'Don't trust' he didn't finish." Gu Wenyao's expression sharpened slightly. "Don't trust who?" "No idea," Lian Ziho replied.

A pause followed. " And a name," Suo Ran added quietly. "Qiao Shiyan." That Changed something.

Gu Wenyao's eyes flickered, just for a second. "Say that again." "Qiao Shiyan," Suo Ran repeated. Silence followed. Cai Lang gaze shifted slightly toward Gu Wenyao. " You know it." Gu Wenyao didn't answer directly. " I've heard it." "That's not the same thing," Cai Lang said. "No," Gu Wenyao agreed. "It's not." Lian Ziho frowned. "So what does it mean?"

Gu Wenyao exhaled quietly. " It means this situation is worse than it looks." "That's reassuring," Lian Ziho muttered.

Suo Ran didn't speak. He just watched Cai Lang. He's here… but not really here.

That thought came uninvited.

Why does it feel like he lost something? (...)

Cai Lang finally moved. " I'll walk you out," he said to Gu Wenyao. His voice was steady.

Outside, the air felt colder, sharper against the skin, as if the world itself had shifted slightly out of place. The faint hum of distant traffic passed by, but even that felt muted. Gu Wenyao stopped near the gate, his posture calm, composed as always, yet his eyes carried something heavier than before.

Cai Lang stood beside him, silent, his hands loosely at his sides. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The quiet stretched not comfortable, not awkward just… deliberate.

Gu Wenyao glanced at him briefly. "You didn't ask anything." Cai Lang's gaze stayed forward. " Would you have answered?"

A faint pause followed. Gu Wenyao exhaled lightly. "Not everything."

" Then there's no point asking," Cai Lang replied. Another silence settled between them, heavier this time. Gu Wenyao studied him for a second longer. "You've changed," he said quietly. That made Cai Lang's brows draw together slightly. " That's a strange thing to say right now." "It's not about timing," Gu Wenyao replied. "It's about what you're choosing not to see." Cai Lang finally looked at him. "Say it clearly." Gu Wenyao's expression didn't shift. "You already know this isn't just about him."

A brief pause. " Lu Zhen didn't end up like that by chance," he continued. "And people don't crawl to your door unless they believe you're still involved." Cai Lang's jaw tightened slightly. "I'm not." Gu Wenyao tilted his head faintly. "Are you sure about that?"

That question lingered longer than expected.

Cai Lang looked away first. " Whatever this is, it has nothing to do with me anymore."

Gu Wenyao didn't respond immediately. Instead, he reached out and patted Cai Lang's shoulder lightly. "When you feel better," he said, "come see me." Cai Lang frowned slightly. " What does that mean?"

Gu Wenyao's gaze lingered on him, thoughtful, almost measuring. "It means you're not thinking clearly right now."

"That's your assumption," Cai Lang replied.

"No," Gu Wenyao said calmly. "That's experience."

A brief silence. Cai Lang's eyes narrowed slightly. " You think I'm going to get involved again?" Gu Wenyao didn't answer directly. "I think you already are." That landed harder than expected. Cai Lang didn't speak.

Gu Wenyao continued, his tone quieter now. "And when that reality catches up to you… you'll need more than silence to deal with it."

Cai Lang let out a faint breath, almost scoffing but there was no real amusement in it. " You're overthinking it." "Am I?" Gu Wenyao asked. Another pause.

Then, more softly, he added, "Just come."

Without waiting for a reply, he turned and walked away, his figure gradually disappearing beyond the gate.

Cai Lang remained standing there.

Still. " Feel better?" he muttered under his breath. The words felt strange in his mouth.

Unfitting. His gaze dropped slightly, his thoughts refusing to settle.

When he returned inside, he paused. Cai Lang stood near the entrance, his hand still resting lightly against the door as if he hadn't fully come back yet. Suo Ran and Lian Ziho were talking quietly in the living room. Close. Too close. Their voices were low, almost blending into the silence, but the distance between them wasn't. For a second, Cai Lang just stood there and watching them.

Then he looked away and walked past them.

Without saying a word.

" This isn't safe," Suo Ran said quietly, his fingers tightening slightly where they rested against the edge of the table. Lian Ziho nodded, his expression serious. "I was thinking the same." Suo Ran's gaze dropped slightly, unfocused. "Jun Wei shouldn't stay here." Lian Ziho didn't hesitate. " Then we leave." A pause followed, heavier than the words themselves. "Today." Suo Ran's throat tightened almost imperceptibly. He nodded slowly. " Today."

The room felt smaller than usual. Suo Ran moved quietly, folding clothes, packing small things, placing them carefully into the bag. Each movement was deliberate, controlled too controlled. Each movement felt heavier than it should.

Why does this feel like running again? (...)

He paused for a second, his hand hovering over Jun Wei's small toys. A worn plush, a tiny car, things that didn't belong in a world like this. His fingers curled slightly.

" Gege?" Suo Ran turned.

Jun Wei stood at the door, watching him. His eyes were clear but there was something uncertain in them now, something that hadn't been there before. "Are we going today?"

Suo Ran nodded. "Yeah." Jun Wei tilted his head slightly, stepping a little closer. "So soon?"

" Yeah." A small pause. "Why can't we stay?"

Suo Ran forced a faint smile, softer than before. "Because this isn't our home."

Jun Wei didn't answer immediately this time. He looked around the room instead the bed, the window, the scattered things that had slowly started to feel familiar. "But we just came here," he said quietly. "I like it here."

Suo Ran's chest tightened. "I know," he replied gently. "I do too." Jun Wei frowned slightly, his small hands curling at his sides. "Then why do we have to leave when I start liking a place?" His voice wasn't loud it was soft, confused. "Why do we always go somewhere else?"

That Hit deeper than anything else. Suo Ran didn't answer right away because he didn't have a simple answer. " Because sometimes staying isn't safe," he said finally, his voice quieter now. Jun Wei looked at him. "Like before?" Suo Ran's expression flickered for just a second. " Yeah," he admitted.

Jun Wei stepped closer, stopping just in front of him. "Is it dangerous here?"

Suo Ran hesitated. Then he crouched down slightly so they were at the same level. "Not yet," he said softly. "But it could be."

Jun Wei studied his face carefully, as if trying to understand everything he wasn't saying.

" Then we go," he said after a moment, simple and certain. Suo Ran blinked slightly.

Jun Wei stepped forward and hugged him tightly, wrapping his small arms around him with quiet determination. "As long as I'm with you, it's fine." Suo Ran's breath caught for a second. His hand slowly came up, resting gently on Jun Wei's head. " You trust me that much?" he murmured. Jun Wei nodded against him. "Of course. You're my gege."

A faint, fragile smile touched Suo Ran's lips.

" Then I won't let anything happen to you."

Jun Wei pulled back slightly, looking up at him. "Promise?" Suo Ran held his gaze.

" I promise." Jun Wei seemed satisfied with that. He nodded once, then glanced at the bag. "Can I bring my toys?" Suo Ran let out a quiet breath, softer now. "Not all of them."

Jun Wei puffed his cheeks slightly. "That's not fair." "We don't have space," Suo Ran replied. Jun Wei thought for a moment, then ran back to the bed, picking up two of his favorites. "Then these." Suo Ran nodded. " Okay.' Jun Wei smiled again, brighter this time, like the earlier heaviness hadn't fully settled into him yet. Suo Ran watched him. And for a brief moment He wished things could stay like this.

Elsewhere Cai Lang moved through the quieter edges of the city, where light faded faster and people paid less attention to passing figures. His steps were steady, but his focus wasn't. Lu Zhen's last words kept circling in his mind. Don't trust… ,Qiao Shiyan…

Cai Lang's gaze sharpened as he stood near a narrow street corner, scanning the area. His hand tightened slightly at his side as he looked around carefully, as if expecting something hidden in plain sight. " If he said it like that," he muttered under his breath, "then it wasn't just a warning." His eyes shifted to a nearby alley, where faint traces of movement lingered too subtle to be called certainty, but enough to make him pause. Someone had been here recently or still was. He stepped forward slowly, attention narrowing, every instinct now focused on details others would miss the faint disturbance in dust, the timing of footsteps that didn't match the crowd, the direction of movement that felt too deliberate.

Meanwhile, back inside the apartment, the quiet continued. Jun Wei shifted slightly in his sleep, mumbling something soft before settling again against Suo Ran. His small hand curled loosely against the fabric of Suo Ran's sleeve, as if even in sleep he was making sure not to let go.

Evening came quietly. Lian Ziho stood near the doorway, watching. On the bed, Suo Ran and Jun Wei were asleep, close together, their breathing slow and even. There was something fragile about the moment something untouched by the tension that had filled the apartment earlier.

They look… safe. (..)

Lian Ziho's gaze softened, lingering longer than it should have. For a brief moment, everything felt distant the danger, the uncertainty, the questions that had no answers. I wish time could stop like this. When there is no danger , running. (...)

Just us and happy moments. (...)

The thought stayed with him, heavier than expected. Suo Ran stirred slightly.

" Lian Ziho?" No response. " Lian Ziho?"

Still nothing. Suo Ran blinked awake, pushing himself up slowly before walking over. He reached out and tapped Lian Ziho's shoulder lightly. Lian Ziho startled faintly, pulled back from his thoughts. "Hm?"

Suo Ran looked at him, a little puzzled. "What were you thinking?" "I was…" Lian Ziho began, then stopped, the words slipping away before they could form. " Nothing."

Suo Ran didn't press, but his gaze lingered for a second longer before shifting away.

Then, suddenly Jun Wei sat up, hair messy, eyes still half-asleep but bright with excitement. "We're going home?!"

Both of them looked at him then smiled.

"Yeah," Suo Ran said softly. "We are."

Jun Wei immediately perked up, completely awake now. "Really? Yeah! " "Today," Suo Ran confirmed. As they began gathering their things, Suo Ran's movements slowed for just a second. His gaze drifted briefly toward the empty space near the entrance.." Cai Lang isn't back yet," he murmured, almost to himself. Lian Ziho noticed immediately. He stepped a little closer, his voice low. "He's not here." Suo Ran hesitated. " Should we wait?"

A brief pause followed. Lian Ziho shook his head slightly. "If we wait, we might not leave at all." Suo Ran didn't respond right away.

" We'll tell him later," Lian Ziho added quietly.

Suo Ran exhaled slowly, the hesitation still there but he nodded. " Okay."

A short while later, they stepped outside, the evening air cool against their skin. The apartment behind them remained quiet, unaware of the absence it would soon hold.

The taxi ride was quiet but warm in its own way. Jun Wei leaned comfortably against Suo Ran, his small frame relaxed, his earlier excitement returning in bursts as he stared out the window. "Look! That shop!" he said suddenly, pointing with bright eyes. Suo Ran followed his gaze and nodded. "Mm. I see it."

"And that one too!" Jun Wei added quickly, shifting to point at another passing light. "Why are there so many?" "Because it's evening," Suo Ran replied gently.

Jun Wei seemed to think about that seriously. "Evening looks nicer outside."

Suo Ran smiled faintly, his hand resting lightly on Jun Wei's head. "It does."

Across from them, Lian Ziho watched the two quietly. He didn't interrupt, didn't speak just observed, his gaze softer than usual. Jun Wei leaned even closer to Suo Ran, his voice dropping slightly as if sharing something important. "Gege when we reach home… can we clean fast?" Suo Ran raised a brow slightly. "You're planning already?"

Jun Wei nodded. "Yes. Then we can sleep faster." Lian Ziho let out a faint breath, almost amused. "You're suddenly responsible."

"I am always responsible," Jun Wei said seriously. Suo Ran chuckled softly. "Of course you are." Jun Wei smiled, satisfied, then rested his head against Suo Ran again, his voice quieter now. "As long as you're there… it's okay."

Suo Ran didn't reply immediately.

His hand moved gently through Jun Wei's hair instead. Across from them, Lian Ziho looked away slightly, his gaze drifting toward the passing lights outside. The city blurred past.
