Qianyu found Orochimaru in his laboratory.

"Orochimaru-sensei," he began, cutting straight to the point. "I've decided. I'm going to Ryūchi Cave. To learn Sage Mode."

Orochimaru's snake-like pupils contracted. "Ryūchi Cave? Sage Mode?" A slow, dangerous smile spread across his lips. "You are already at the peak of what this world considers strength, boy. The risks of that path… are not insignificant. Failure is not a setback. It is a permanent end."

"I know the risks," Qianyu said, his voice flat. "My current strength is nothing. A temporary plateau. The enemies that are coming… they exist on a different scale. My power is insufficient. Therefore, I must acquire more. By any means necessary."

"Enemies on a different scale?" Orochimaru's interest was a palpable, cold thing in the air. "How can you be so certain of what is to come?"

Qianyu couldn't explain. Not fully. "When I first awakened my Mangekyō Sharingan, sensei… I saw things. Visions. An indescribable ruin. I don't know how to articulate it. But I know I must be ready to prevent it. Or to survive it. This is the most logical step."

Orochimaru watched him for a long, silent moment. The only sound was the faint drip of something in a distant glass tank. "A goal born from prophecy or paranoia… it matters little. I will not stop you. But understand. The trials to even earn the right to learn are trifles for you. The true danger begins after."

He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I attempted it once. I failed. My body began to turn to stone from the feet up. I felt the paralysis, the cold seep into my marrow. I only escaped by shedding my entire form—using my Great Snake Attire Technique to disperse into a swarm of lesser snakes, leaving the petrified shell behind. I have no advice for success. Only a warning: if you are not absolutely prepared to bet your entire existence on this, do not go."

Qianyu nodded once. A sharp, decisive motion. "I understand the danger. I have… contingencies. Even in failure, I will not become a statue in a cave. That is why I am going."

"Contingencies?" Orochimaru's smile returned, wider this time. "How fascinating. Very well. I wish you… intriguing results."

"There is one more thing," Qianyu said, his tone shifting. "While I am gone, Kakashi will act as captain of the Leaf Village Defense Force in my stead. Kushina… and Kakashi himself. I would ask you to watch over them."

Orochimaru gave a dismissive wave. "They are my… interesting specimens as well. I will ensure no harm comes to them that is not educational. You have my word."

"Thank you, sensei." Qianyu gave a brief, respectful bow and turned to leave. One obligation down. The next would be more… tedious.

The Root base was all shadow and cold stone. Danzō sat behind his desk like a gargoyle carved from suspicion.

Qianyu laid it out plainly: Ryūchi Cave. Sage Mode. Kakashi as acting captain.

Danzō's single visible eye narrowed, the wrinkles around it deepening into crevices. "The Defense Force has just found its rhythm. Its fangs. And now its captain abandons his post? To play at being a sage? And you put a child in your chair? This is recklessness."

Qianyu had expected this. Danzō was a tool. A useful, sharp, paranoid tool. And no tool got to dictate the hand that wielded it.

"Perhaps, Lord Danzō," Qianyu said, his voice smooth as oil, "my absence is the more strategic move."

Danzō scoffed. "Explain."

"Look at the Uchiha now. After the pressure we've applied, they are coiled tight. Hiding in their compound. Playing the model citizens. If we keep pressing at this intensity, they will never give us a reason to strike harder. The Hokage and Minato Namikaze would intervene. To break the snake, you must first let it uncoil. To let it think the danger has passed."

He took a step closer, his gaze steady on Danzō's. "I am the pressure. My absence is their respite. Kakashi as captain is a lighter hand. They will relax. They will grow bold again. They will make mistakes. And when I return…" He let the sentence hang, a promise of future violence. "We can crush them completely. One decisive blow, with all the justification we need."

Danzō was silent, his fingers steepled. The logic was… sound. He had seen Fugaku's game—the calculated arrests, the immediate bail. A performance of compliance. The clan was quiet, but seething. Letting them stew, then giving them a false sense of security… Yes. It had a certain elegance.

But.

A cold suspicion crystallized in his gut. Every time. Every single time there was a divergence, this boy found a way to twist the argument. To make Danzō agree. To make it seem like Danzō's idea. That was not the dynamic of a master and his loyal hound. That was the dynamic of a puppeteer and his… instrument.

The realization was a slow-acting poison.

"And if I refuse?" Danzō's voice was low, devoid of all warmth. "If I forbid this… pilgrimage of yours?"

Qianyu didn't flinch. He met the older man's gaze head-on, his own eyes flat and unreadable. "The decision is yours, Lord Danzō. My desire for strength is only to better serve you and our cause. If you command me to stay, I stay."

Once, those words would have pleased him. Now, they rang hollow. A well-practiced script.

Danzō leaned forward, the weight of his decades of darkness pressing down on the room. He didn't have time for subtlety anymore. The question had to be asked.

"Qianyu," he said, each syllable sharp as a kunai. "Tell me truthfully. Does your heart… still belong to Root?"
