Elise stayed glued to Jiji's side the entire day, whispering soft words of comfort while the girl's shoulders shook with fresh waves of grief.
Though she had seen her father move around speaking to people, but after Luciens words, he didn't look her way anymore. He completely ignored her existence.
How fitting, she thought bitterly, swallowing the lump in her throat.
What surprised her most was that her sisters were not here too. Did someone give birth again? They would have hit her by now if they were here and maybe try to embarrass her before everyone.
Once Jiji's tears had finally slowed to quiet sniffles, she lifted her swollen eyes to Elise. "How's our hubby?" she asked in a small voice, forcing a watery smile. "Have you told him yet? About… everything?" Asking about Lucien was not what she's supposed to do, but it's been so long since she last saw Elise. She knew her friend was dying soon, a man like Lucien that cares about Elise is supposed to know about her death too.
