Chapter 238 - Siren's Wake

Emberlyn Stormtide woke up unable to feel her legs.

That was the first thing she noticed.

The second thing she noticed was warmth.

Too much warmth.

Something soft was pressed against her back. Something else was draped over one of her legs. An arm rested across her stomach possessively.

And somehow—

Someone was using her chest as a pillow.

"…What in the seven drowned hells…"

Her voice came out weak and raspy.

She tried to sit up.

That turned out to be a catastrophic mistake.

Pain.

Everywhere.

Not injury pain.

Exhaustion pain.

The kind of soreness that came after physical exertion so intense it felt spiritual.

Emberlyn slowly lowered herself back into the bed with all the dignity of a sinking ship.

"…Sweet merciful tides…"

The memories returned all at once.

The laughter.

The teasing.

The drinks.

The warmth.

The touching.

The way the Vixens had welcomed her instead of treating her like an outsider.

And Jax…

Her face immediately turned red.

"Bloody abyss…"

She had completely lost herself.

Not just physically.

Emotionally.

That was the terrifying part.

Emberlyn had shared beds before.

Shared bodies before.

Shared nights before.

That wasn't new.

But this?

This was different.

She had opened herself emotionally in ways she never had with anyone.

No walls.

No sarcasm.

No armor.

No control.

And somehow that vulnerability had not weakened her.

It had elevated her.

The closeness.

The affection.

The trust.

It had reached places inside her she didn't even realize existed.

Which made absolutely no sense.

Because now she had a problem.

A massive problem.

She craved comfort.

Not lust.

Not just desire.

Comfort.

That terrifying, dangerous feeling of wanting someone near you simply because their presence made the world quieter.

And somehow—

Someway—

That person had become Jax Darquebane.

"…How…" she whispered weakly to herself.

How does he do this?

How does he keep going?

How is he so strong?

How does he learn everything so damn fast?

How can one man fight wars, slay dragons, outplay her in Go, cook like a royal chef, and somehow still have enough energy left to utterly ruin her life?

It made no sense.

None.

And worst of all?

She didn't care anymore.

Because somewhere during the night, her heart had betrayed her.

Completely.

A smell drifted through the room.

Emberlyn's eyes widened.

Breakfast.

Not normal breakfast.

Jax breakfast.

The kind that smelled so good it could probably stop wars.

Her stomach growled aggressively.

Then she realized everyone else was already awake.

Or mostly awake.

Bunny was sprawled halfway off the bed holding onto Zee like a stuffed animal.

Nyxian was somehow sleeping upside down against the headboard.

Pixelle and Lexi were arguing sleepily over blankets.

Llandra looked entirely too composed for someone who had gone through the same night.

Meanwhile Emberlyn felt like she had survived a naval disaster.

"…How are all of you alive?"

Llandra smirked.

"Practice."

"Practice?!"

Nyxian cracked one eye open.

"iPoints."

Emberlyn groaned into the pillow.

That damned system again.

She had seen it.

Actually seen it.

After the night before.

A glowing panel.

Notifications.

Stat increases.

Something called iPoints.

At first she thought she hallucinated from exhaustion.

Then Zee explained it quietly later while everyone else was occupied.

The explanation nearly broke Emberlyn's brain.

"You're telling me… I can actually grow stronger from this?"

Zee nodded innocently.

"Jax figured it out early."

Emberlyn stared blankly for nearly thirty seconds.

"…That is the greatest discovery in human history."

Nyxian sat up immediately.

"SEE?! I SAID THAT YEARS AGO!"

"You say that every week."

"Because I'm right every week."

By the time Emberlyn finally managed to stand, she looked like a woman recovering from battle.

Jax glanced up from the kitchen area.

"…You okay?"

"No."

"That bad?"

"You're a menace to civilization."

"That feels excessive."

"It is not."

He handed her a plate anyway.

The smell alone nearly made her emotional.

Seafood omelets.

Fresh bread.

Fruit.

Something with melted cheese and herbs she couldn't identify.

"Marry me," Emberlyn muttered before taking the first bite.

Nyxian pointed dramatically.

"She admits feelings!"

"I will throw you overboard."

"You'd miss me."

"…Probably."

That realization annoyed Emberlyn immensely.

The next several days passed strangely peacefully.

The Vixens largely stayed below deck to avoid seasickness.

Despite all their strength and abilities, the ocean still absolutely destroyed them.

Bunny especially suffered dramatically.

At one point she laid across the couch groaning:

"I fought an army…"

Pause.

"I survived dragons…"

Longer pause.

"…But this boat is my true enemy."

Meanwhile Jax seemed completely unaffected.

The man thrived on the ocean.

He learned ropes.

Navigation.

Wind reading.

Sail adjustments.

Crew rotations.

Within days he worked alongside sailors like he had spent years at sea.

Which only made Emberlyn's obsession worse.

Because the crew loved him.

Not feared him.

Loved him.

He listened.

Worked.

Learned.

Never acted above them.

One older sailor eventually muttered:

"Honestly, if he asked half this crew to jump into the ocean, they probably would."

"Depends," another replied. "Did he cook first?"

The relationship between Emberlyn and Jax remained mostly secret.

Mostly.

No public affection.

No obvious displays.

But Emberlyn was terrible at subtlety.

She brushed his hand "accidentally" constantly.

Stood closer than necessary while helping on deck.

Passed beside him while letting her fingers slide against his back.

Tiny things.

Possessive things.

Claiming things.

And Jax noticed every single one.

He just pretended not to.

Mostly because he found it amusing.

The real danger came at night.

Because every night Emberlyn opened more.

Trusted more.

Wanted more.

And every morning she woke up more attached than before.

It was becoming a serious problem.

A problem she had absolutely no intention of fixing.

Then, nearly ten days later—

Land appeared.

"The Demon Port!" one sailor shouted.

Excitement spread quickly across the deck.

Even the Vixens emerged to see it.

Jax stood near the bow studying the massive harbor ahead.

And honestly?

He looked disappointed.

"…That's it?"

Emberlyn blinked.

"What were you expecting?"

"I don't know."

Jax gestured vaguely.

"More spikes?"

"Spikes?"

"Dark castles. Lava rivers. Maybe skulls."

Pixelle floated nearby.

"You expected evil architecture."

"Yes."

"That's racist."

"It absolutely is not."

The harbor ahead looked surprisingly normal.

Massive docks stretched along the coastline.

Cargo cranes moved goods.

Fishing ships unloaded catches.

Workers shouted.

Merchants argued.

Sailors hauled crates.

Children ran through the streets.

It looked…

Alive.

Busy.

Functional.

Like every other port city they had ever visited.

Because despite all the stories…

This was still the same world.

Just separated long ago.

Different cultures.

Different histories.

But people were still people.

Jax watched workers carrying cargo through the harbor.

"Every world really does have middle management."

Emberlyn barked out a laugh.

"What?"

"No matter where you go," Jax continued, "it's always underpaid workers doing the labor while someone important takes credit."

"That might be the most universally true thing you've ever said."

The harbor itself had differences though.

Architecture leaned darker.

Buildings used black stone and deep crimson woods.

Lanterns glowed purple instead of gold.

Music drifted through the streets—slower, deeper, heavier.

The people were different too.

More demonkin.

Horns.

Tails.

Wings.

Succubi.

Incubi.

Various races Jax didn't immediately recognize.

And unlike the old Empire, nobody seemed especially shocked by mixed races interacting openly.

A sharkman argued prices with a horned merchant while a fox beastkin unloaded fish nearby.

Normal.

Peaceful.

Functional.

Which made Jax narrow his eyes thoughtfully.

"…Interesting."

Llandra noticed immediately.

"You're thinking."

"This place doesn't feel like an enemy nation."

"No," Emberlyn admitted quietly. "It doesn't."

Jax stared toward the sprawling city beyond the harbor.

Toward the unknown continent beyond it.

Toward answers.

Toward barriers.

Toward Adam Lightbringer.

Toward whatever truth waited on the other side of the world.

And somewhere deep inside—

The system pulsed quietly.

As if pleased he had arrived exactly where he was supposed to be.
