Chapter 36 - What Could Be

They stayed on the cliff far longer than anyone realized.

The sun drifted lower while gold and orange light stretched across the lake below like molten glass. Wind rolled gently through the trees beneath them, carrying the distant sounds of the festival back from Solmere.

Music.

Laughter.

Life.

Jax didn't rush the moment.

He never did when something mattered.

Bunny leaned forward first, resting both hands against the stone overlook while her ears twitched thoughtfully.

"So," she asked, "are we talking house? Fortress? Secret lair?"

Nyxian smirked immediately.

"If there isn't at least one hidden passage and a dramatic balcony, I'm already disappointed."

"Hidden passages sound expensive," Zee murmured softly.

"We have dragon money now," Nyxian replied confidently.

"That still sounds irresponsible."

"It sounds visionary."

Llandra remained quiet.

Not distracted.

Focused.

Her eyes moved slowly across the terrain:

cliffside elevation

tree density

water access

natural defensive routes

She wasn't admiring the land.

She was evaluating it.

Then finally she looked toward Jax.

"You didn't bring us here impulsively," she said.

"You've already planned this."

Jax exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

He stepped closer to the edge and gestured outward.

"The cliff gives natural defense."

Toward the forest.

"Resources. Hunting. Lumber."

Toward the lake.

"Clean water. Fishing. Trade access later if routes expand."

The Vixens stared quietly.

"You've really thought about this," Bunny murmured.

"I think about it constantly," Jax admitted.

"Not just surviving. Not just fighting."

His voice softened slightly.

"Building something that lasts."

That quieted everyone.

Even Nyxian.

The succubus crossed her arms loosely while watching him.

"You're not planning a headquarters," she realized.

"You're planning a home."

Jax looked toward her and smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Silence settled afterward.

Not awkward.

Full.

Meaningful.

Zee slowly moved closer beside him, resting lightly against his shoulder while staring out across the land.

"In the cult," she said quietly, "they always talked about destiny."

Her glow was faint tonight.

Warm.

Steady.

"They said places were chosen by gods."

She looked back toward Solmere.

"This feels different."

Jax glanced toward her.

"How?"

Zee smiled softly.

"…This feels like something we choose."

Llandra nodded once immediately.

"Choice matters," she said.

"Especially when it's shared."

The words lingered quietly between them while the last sunlight stretched across the lake below like a promise.

The walk back into Solmere felt different afterward.

Not because the city had changed.

Because they had.

Festival lanterns now filled nearly every street while performers occupied intersections with music, dancing, and fire tricks that drew constant crowds.

Children sprinted through the roads carrying skewered sweets while merchants shouted over one another trying to attract customers.

The city felt alive.

And more importantly—

hopeful.

Jax noticed something else too.

People recognized them now.

Not with fear.

Not with distant awe.

With familiarity.

A butcher waved enthusiastically from across the street.

An elderly dwarf nodded respectfully as they passed.

Two adventurers raised mugs toward Jax from an outdoor tavern patio.

Bunny noticed it too.

"He belongs here now," she whispered softly.

Nyxian smirked.

"We all do."

That one hit surprisingly hard.

They stopped briefly at the Neon Moon afterward so Jax could check on operations.

The restaurant looked even busier somehow.

Stevano appeared immediately upon spotting them.

"Boss," he said proudly, "we ran out of tables."

"That's generally considered a good problem."

"We borrowed tables."

"…Reasonable solution."

"The kitchen also declared war on the western oven."

Jax blinked.

"The oven lost."

"Excellent."

The Vixens laughed while Stevano continued updating him on staffing, inventory, and profit margins with increasingly manic excitement.

Eventually Jax placed a hand on the young demonkin's shoulder.

"Stevano."

"Yes, boss?"

"You're doing great."

The young man froze slightly.

Then stood straighter.

"…Thank you."

Jax smiled faintly.

"Now go save the restaurant from whatever new disaster is happening."

Stevano nodded firmly.

"I won't fail you."

Then immediately sprinted away because something exploded in the kitchen.

"…Should we be concerned?" Zee asked carefully.

"Nah," Jax replied.

"If the screaming sounds motivated, everything's fine."

They returned to the hotel later that evening.

The suite was quieter tonight.

Comfortable.

Boots came off.

Armor loosened.

Drinks were poured but mostly ignored.

Zee curled up on the couch almost immediately while Bunny sat beside her absentmindedly brushing through her hair.

Nyxian occupied the window seat dramatically because apparently every succubus instinctively understood mood lighting.

Llandra remained standing for a while.

Watching Jax quietly.

Eventually she approached him.

"You said this land would become our future," she said softly.

"What does that mean to you?"

Jax considered the question carefully before answering.

"A place where nobody has to ask whether they belong."

The room quieted slightly.

"A place where people aren't judged by race, power, status, or usefulness."

Nyxian snorted lightly.

"So basically the opposite of the Empire."

"Pretty much."

Jax leaned back slightly afterward.

"It also means attention."

His expression sharpened slightly.

"People won't like what we build here."

Llandra's lips curved faintly.

"Then they'll have to deal with us."

From the couch, Zee lazily lifted one hand.

"Poor them."

That earned soft laughter from everyone.

The comfortable kind.

The kind that made a room feel safe.

Later that night, after the others slowly drifted toward sleep, Jax stood quietly near the suite window overlooking Solmere.

The city glowed beneath him.

Lanterns.

Music.

Crowded streets.

Life.

A town most people overlooked was slowly becoming something important.

Something alive.

Something worth protecting.

Behind him, the Vixens rested peacefully:

safe

warm

trusting

Jax rested one hand against the cool window glass while staring down at the city below.

Good and bad everywhere, he thought.

That would never change.

But here?

Here, maybe they could build something better.

Something lasting.

Something kind.

Behind him, Nyxian's sleepy voice suddenly broke the silence.

The room instantly dissolved into tired laughter.

Even Jax.

Especially Jax.

And somehow—

that made the moment feel even more real.
