She put her hand briefly on his face the way she sometimes did when she was checking something she could not articulate but knew the answer to by feel, and then stepped back fully with the settled quality of someone who had done what they needed to do and was not going to extend it further than that.
"I will take care of everything."
Jane was near the gate.
She had been waiting without making a production of it, standing a few paces from the gate with her hands folded in front of her and her expression doing the careful composed thing she did when she was holding something in and was not going to let it be visible.
