Chapter 55 - Chapter 54: The First Crack in the Rival

Pressure does not always scream.

Sometimes, it whispers.

And Veer Singh was finally beginning to hear it.

1. The Stare That Didn't Flinch

Net session.

Late afternoon.

The sun hung low over the academy ground.

Veer Singh marked his run-up with unnecessary force.

Every step loud.

Every breath deliberate.

This was his territory.

Rudra took guard.

No stretching.

No shadow shots.

No eye contact.

Just stillness.

Veer smirked. "Scared to look up now?"

Rudra replied without lifting his bat.

"No. Just counting."

"Counting what?" Veer snapped.

"The number of balls you'll waste before you hit your length."

Silence.

The coach looked up.

2. Ball One — The Statement

Veer ran in.

Hard length.

Chest-high bounce.

Pure intimidation.

Rudra didn't play a shot.

He swayed inside the line and let the ball thud into the keeper's gloves.

Sher Shrivastava, watching casually from the boundary, chuckled.

"Oho! Gend ne Rudra ko chua bhi nahi! Yeh toh izzat ka sawaal ho gaya!"

(The ball didn't even touch Rudra! Now this is a matter of respect!)

Veer turned around, irritated.

Lucky, he told himself.

3. Ball Two — The Mirror

Same length.

Same pace.

Same intent.

Rudra stepped back this time.

Bat came down late.

Very late.

The ball kissed the face of the bat and slipped past gully.

Not fast.

Not flashy.

But perfectly timed.

Dr. Subramanium leaned forward.

"That," he murmured, "is delayed impact control. Rare at this age."

Veer frowned.

Why isn't he rushing?

4. Ball Three — The Trap

Veer changed tactics.

Slower ball.

Shorter length.

Make him reach.

Rudra saw it early.

Too early.

He didn't pull.

Didn't cut.

He simply dropped the bat vertically and let the ball die at his feet.

A dead ball.

A dead moment.

Veer clenched his jaw.

"Why aren't you attacking?" he growled.

Rudra finally looked up.

"I am," he said calmly.

"Just not where you want me to."

5. The Crack

Veer overstepped.

A fraction.

Barely visible.

But Rudra noticed.

🟢 Mental Pressure Applied

Ball Four.

Veer went fuller.

Too full.

Rudra leaned forward.

Not aggressively.

Authoritatively.

The bat met the ball under his eyes.

Straight drive.

Clean.

Grounded.

Unstoppable.

The ball raced past the bowler's follow-through.

Action Anand's voice echoed from behind the nets.

"OOOH! That's a message! Rudra Sharma just signed the lease on Veer Singh's confidence!"

Veer froze.

For half a second—

He forgot where he was.

6. The Unsaid Victory

The over ended.

No celebration.

No stare-down.

Rudra simply walked away to change gloves.

Veer stood alone at his mark.

Breathing heavier now.

Not tired.

Unsettled.

Major Rathore muttered from the sidelines,

"Hmph. He didn't beat him with strength…

He beat him with certainty."

7. Rudra's Inner Voice

As he walked back, Rudra thought—

This is how it begins.

Not domination.

Doubt.

Veer Singh would still bowl fast.

Still hit hard.

Still intimidate others.

But against Rudra—

The seed was planted.

And doubt, once rooted, never stops growing.

Rudra adjusted his pads and glanced at the pitch.

The game hadn't shifted yet.

But the balance had.
