Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: Pressure Is a Language

Pressure did not announce itself loudly.

It arrived quietly, wrapped in discipline and intent, and it demanded respect.

Mumbai understood this better than most teams.

The field spread again, but this time it was deliberate, almost surgical.

Every fielder stood exactly where the percentages demanded, not where emotion suggested.

Dr. V.V. Subramanium (Measured):

"Mumbai has shifted gears. They are no longer trying to dismiss Rudra Sharma. They are trying to suffocate him."

Rudra took guard, tapping the crease carefully as he surveyed the field.

His breathing was slow, controlled, and perfectly aligned with his heartbeat.

Rudra (Thinking):

Pressure is not noise.

Pressure is repetition.

They want me to feel trapped by time.

The bowler charged in and delivered a probing length ball outside off stump.

Rudra judged the line early and allowed the ball to pass harmlessly into the wicketkeeper's gloves.

The crowd groaned in unison.

Sher Shrivastava (Half-amused, half-impressed):

"Bhai log, yeh ladka shot nahi khel raha, yeh toh bowler ka patience test kar raha hai!"

The next delivery was fuller and straighter, aimed at the pads.

Rudra clipped it gently toward square leg and called for a single without hesitation.

The scoreboard moved, even if only slightly.

The chase remained alive.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:

🟢 [Strike Rotation] EXP +25

🟢 [Match Awareness] EXP +20

At the non-striker's end, the new batsman looked tense.

His shoulders were stiff, his grip too tight, and his eyes darted nervously.

Rudra walked toward him during the over break.

Rudra (Calm, clear):

"Play the ball, not the situation. We still have time."

The younger boy nodded, breathing a little easier.

SYSTEM UPDATE:

🟢 [Leadership] EXP +15

Mumbai responded immediately.

The captain moved a fielder straighter and brought mid-on inside the circle, daring Rudra to take the aerial route.

Major R.S. Rathore (Dry):

"This is where discipline is tested. One loose shot, and all this patience becomes meaningless."

The bowler returned, this time shortening his length and targeting Rudra's ribs.

Rudra swayed inside the line, letting the ball brush past harmlessly.

The sound of leather hitting gloves echoed sharply.

Rudra (Thinking):

They are increasing physical discomfort.

Classic escalation pattern.

The next ball followed the same plan, but Rudra anticipated it early.

He rolled his wrists smoothly and guided the ball behind square for two controlled runs.

The crowd applauded—not for power, but for intelligence.

Action Anand (Excited):

"This is high-IQ cricket! No drama, no heroics—just pure awareness under pressure!"

The bowler wiped sweat from his forehead.

The plan was not failing, but it was not succeeding either.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:

🟢 [Pressure Handling] EXP +40

🟢 [Consistency] EXP +30

As the over ended, Rudra glanced at the scoreboard.

The required run rate remained manageable, but the margin for error was shrinking.

Rudra (Thinking):

Pressure is a language.

If you respond emotionally, it grows louder.

If you respond correctly, it becomes silent.

He tapped his bat once more and took guard for the next over.

The match had entered a phase where skill alone was not enough.

Only understanding would decide the outcome.
