**EPISODE EIGHTY**

**THE ERROR THAT LEARNED TO READ**

**Part Twenty-One: THE WORD THAT LOOKED BACK**

---

The darkness...

was not empty.

Milo knew this...

because something was breathing.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Not behind him.

Not in front of him.

Somewhere...

between the words.

Milo stood perfectly still.

Diana's hand remained inside his.

Tarzan stood beside them.

The writer held his pen.

The old man closed his eyes.

The children...

were silent.

The thing that had once been perfect...

was still staring at the banana peel.

The peel...

was no longer a peel.

It had become a sentence.

I REMEMBER YOU.

Milo whispered...

"Who?"

The letters moved.

I REMEMBER ALL OF YOU.

The darkness breathed again.

Tarzan raised his hand.

"DO YOU REMEMBER THE BANANA?"

The letters stopped.

Milo slowly turned toward him.

"Why would that be your first question?"

Tarzan looked offended.

"IT IS A MATTER OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE."

The writer whispered...

"Don't."

Tarzan frowned.

"WHY?"

"Because..."

The writer stared into the darkness.

"...it might answer."

Silence.

The darkness...

answered.

"I remember the banana."

Tarzan's face went pale.

He whispered...

"How?"

The darkness laughed.

Not loudly.

Not cruelly.

Almost...

fondly.

"I remember everything you forgot."

The old man opened his eyes.

Milo looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

The old man didn't answer.

Diana did.

"It means..."

She stared at the darkness.

"...we are not the first version."

Milo froze.

The boy with the bleeding knee looked down.

The nameless child stepped backward.

The thing that had learned to make mistakes whispered...

"How many?"

The darkness answered.

"Enough."

Milo's heart tightened.

"Enough for what?"

The darkness moved.

The blackness gathered itself into a shape.

Not human.

Not animal.

Not anything Milo could name.

It looked...

like a hole in the page.

A hole that had learned...

to look back.

Milo stepped backward.

The hole stepped forward.

Milo stopped.

The hole stopped.

Milo whispered...

"It copies us."

The writer shook his head.

"No."

Milo looked at him.

"It doesn't copy."

The writer's face had gone white.

"It reads."

The hole opened.

Inside it...

were words.

Thousands.

Millions.

Every sentence they had ever spoken.

Every sentence they had never spoken.

Every ending.

Every beginning.

Every...

TO BE CONTINUED.

Milo stared.

"That's impossible."

The writer laughed nervously.

"You're still saying that?"

Milo didn't answer.

The hole spoke.

"You have used that word before."

Milo swallowed.

"When?"

The hole answered...

"Every time."

A page appeared beneath Milo's feet.

He looked down.

There was a sentence.

MILO SAID, "THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE."

Milo stopped breathing.

The sentence changed.

MILO STOPPED BREATHING.

Milo looked up.

"No."

The sentence changed again.

MILO LOOKED UP.

Diana grabbed his arm.

"Milo."

He looked at her.

She whispered...

"Don't think."

Milo frowned.

"Why?"

The writer answered.

"Because it's reading you."

Milo closed his eyes.

Immediately...

words appeared around him.

HE CLOSED HIS EYES.

Milo opened them.

The words changed.

HE OPENED HIS EYES.

He stepped backward.

The words followed.

HE STEPPED BACKWARD.

Tarzan walked forward.

The words appeared.

TARZAN WALKED FORWARD.

Tarzan stopped.

He stared at the sentence.

Then...

smiled.

Milo frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Tarzan whispered...

"TESTING SOMETHING."

He raised his banana.

Then...

did absolutely nothing.

The words waited.

Tarzan waited.

The darkness waited.

Milo waited.

Finally...

Tarzan dropped the banana.

The words appeared.

TARZAN DROPPED THE BANANA.

Tarzan looked at Milo.

"IT ONLY WRITES WHAT WE DO."

Milo nodded.

"Yes."

Tarzan smiled.

"THEN I SHALL DO NOTHING."

He sat down.

The words appeared.

TARZAN SAT DOWN.

Tarzan screamed.

"BETRAYAL."

The writer laughed.

Then stopped.

Because new words were appearing.

THE WRITER LAUGHED.

The writer's face changed.

"Oh."

Milo looked at him.

"What?"

The writer whispered...

"It's not only recording."

He looked at the darkness.

"It's predicting."

The darkness smiled.

If darkness could smile.

And then...

a sentence appeared.

MILO WILL TURN AROUND.

Milo froze.

Diana whispered...

"Don't."

Milo stared straight ahead.

The sentence remained.

MILO WILL TURN AROUND.

Tarzan leaned toward him.

"DO NOT TURN."

Milo nodded.

"I won't."

Another sentence appeared.

MILO WILL SAY, "I WON'T."

Milo's eyes widened.

Then another.

MILO WILL LOOK AT TARZAN.

He looked.

Tarzan stared back.

"OH."

The darkness laughed.

Milo whispered...

"It knows."

The writer corrected him.

"No."

He looked terrified.

"It expects."

---

2. THE SENTENCE THAT REFUSED TO HAPPEN

Milo stepped forward.

The darkness did not move.

Milo raised one hand.

Nothing.

He lowered it.

Nothing.

He whispered...

"Fine."

A sentence appeared.

MILO WILL ASK A QUESTION.

Milo stopped.

"No."

The sentence remained.

Milo smiled.

"I'm not asking anything."

The darkness waited.

The writer stared at the page.

Nothing happened.

Seconds passed.

Then...

the sentence disappeared.

Milo smiled.

"I broke it."

The writer shook his head.

"No."

Milo's smile faded.

The writer pointed.

"Look."

A new sentence appeared.

MILO WILL BELIEVE HE BROKE IT.

Milo stared.

The writer whispered...

"It's always one step ahead."

Diana stepped forward.

"No."

The writer looked at her.

She continued...

"It's not one step ahead."

She stared into the darkness.

"It's standing outside the steps."

The old man nodded.

"The reader."

Milo looked at him.

"You mean the reader who changed the middle?"

The old man said nothing.

The boy with the bleeding knee suddenly spoke.

"Not the reader."

Everyone turned.

The boy looked at the darkness.

"The reading."

Milo frowned.

"What?"

The boy touched his injured knee.

"The mistake wasn't that someone read the ending."

The writer slowly lowered his pen.

The boy continued.

"The mistake was..."

He looked frightened.

"...that the ending read back."

Silence.

The darkness...

moved.

For the first time...

it moved away from them.

The hole became smaller.

Smaller.

Smaller.

Until...

it became a single black dot.

The dot floated.

Then...

a word appeared beside it.

RUN.

Milo stared.

Tarzan immediately stood.

"FINALLY."

Milo looked at him.

"What?"

Tarzan pointed.

"THE STORY HAS GIVEN US GOOD ADVICE."

Everyone ran.

They ran through pages.

Past paragraphs.

Through unfinished sentences.

Across worlds that existed only for one line.

They passed a city where everyone had the same face.

A forest where every tree whispered the ending.

A sea made entirely of ink.

A mountain made from discarded beginnings.

A house with no doors.

A door with no house.

A sentence that ended...

before it began.

Milo ran beside Diana.

The child ran behind them.

The boy with the bleeding knee followed.

The old man moved strangely fast.

The writer carried his pen.

Tarzan...

was carrying the banana peel.

Milo looked at him.

"Why?"

Tarzan shouted...

"IT IS EVIDENCE."

"Of what?"

"THE CRIME."

"What crime?"

Tarzan pointed behind them.

"READING."

Milo looked back.

The black dot...

was following.

Not moving.

Simply...

appearing closer.

Every time they turned...

it was closer.

Milo shouted...

"Faster!"

Diana ran harder.

The child stumbled.

Milo grabbed him.

The boy stopped.

"Wait."

Milo turned.

"What?"

The boy pointed behind them.

The black dot had stopped.

Everyone froze.

The dot...

was looking at the boy.

The boy's face went white.

"It knows me."

Milo stepped in front of him.

"How?"

The boy shook his head.

"I don't know."

The darkness spoke.

"You do."

The boy trembled.

"No."

"You do."

"No."

"You remember."

The boy covered his ears.

"No!"

The words appeared around him.

HE REMEMBERS.

The boy screamed.

Milo grabbed him.

"Tell me!"

The boy looked at Milo.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I was there."

"Where?"

"Before."

"Before what?"

The boy whispered...

"Before the first sentence."

The universe...

went silent.

The writer dropped his pen.

The old man stared.

Diana whispered...

"That's impossible."

The boy looked at her.

"No."

He touched his bleeding knee.

"That's the problem."

---

3. BEFORE THE FIRST SENTENCE

The pages disappeared.

All of them.

Milo stood in darkness.

Not the darkness behind the pages.

Something older.

There were no words.

No sentences.

No characters.

No story.

No reader.

No writer.

Nothing.

Milo looked around.

"Diana?"

"I'm here."

"Tarzan?"

A voice answered...

"UNFORTUNATELY."

Milo sighed with relief.

The writer whispered...

"I can't see."

The old man answered...

"Neither can I."

The children were silent.

Then...

something appeared.

Not a word.

Not an object.

A possibility.

Milo could feel it.

Something waiting...

to become real.

The boy walked forward.

Everyone watched.

He stopped.

Then raised his hand.

Milo grabbed his wrist.

"Don't."

The boy looked at him.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

The boy smiled.

"That's exactly why."

He touched the darkness.

A sound occurred.

Not a voice.

Not music.

Not anything.

A beginning.

Milo felt the universe inhale.

Then...

a word appeared.

ONCE.

Milo froze.

Another.

UPON.

Another.

A.

Another.

TIME.

The old man whispered...

"No."

The writer stared.

"It's beginning again."

Milo stepped backward.

"No."

The words continued.

ONCE UPON A TIME...

Milo shouted...

"STOP!"

The words stopped.

Silence.

Milo breathed.

Then...

a new sentence appeared.

ONCE UPON A TIME, MILO FINCH SAID STOP.

Milo stared.

Tarzan whispered...

"THAT WAS NOT HELPFUL."

The writer looked at Milo.

"You understand now."

"What?"

"The first mistake."

Milo shook his head.

"No."

The writer pointed at the words.

"The story doesn't begin when someone writes."

Milo looked at him.

"It begins when someone expects."

Diana whispered...

"Expects what?"

The writer answered...

"What happens next."

Milo stared at the sentence.

The boy spoke.

"That's what I did."

Milo turned.

"What?"

The boy looked down.

"I wanted to know."

The old man closed his eyes.

"What did you want to know?"

The boy whispered...

"Everything."

The darkness shifted.

The boy continued.

"I wanted to know what happened after the last word."

Milo's face changed.

"And?"

The boy looked at him.

"There was no last word."

Milo froze.

"What?"

The boy whispered...

"Because someone kept reading."

The writer looked horrified.

"That's why."

Diana stepped closer.

"Why what?"

The writer turned toward Milo.

"The story never ended."

Milo stared.

"The endings..."

The writer nodded.

"...were doors."

The old man finished...

"And every reader opened another."

Milo remembered.

Episode after episode.

World after world.

Death after death.

Beginning after beginning.

Every ending...

had become another beginning.

Milo whispered...

"So we're trapped."

The darkness answered.

"No."

Everyone looked toward it.

The voice continued.

"You are being continued."

Tarzan raised the banana peel.

"THAT SOUNDS WORSE."

---

4. THE READER'S ROOM

A door appeared.

Milo stared.

It was ordinary.

Wood.

Handle.

Small scratch near the bottom.

A little light beneath it.

Diana whispered...

"What's behind it?"

The writer shook his head.

"The reader."

Milo stepped toward the door.

The old man grabbed him.

"No."

Milo looked back.

"Why?"

"Because you don't know what a reader looks like from inside a story."

Milo stared at the door.

"Maybe that's what we need."

The old man whispered...

"Maybe that's what it wants."

Milo reached for the handle.

Tarzan grabbed his arm.

"WAIT."

Milo looked at him.

Tarzan held up the banana peel.

"WE SHOULD BRING THIS."

Milo sighed.

"Fine."

They opened the door.

Light.

A room.

A chair.

A desk.

A lamp.

A cup.

A stack of papers.

And...

a person.

Sitting with their back toward them.

Milo stopped.

Diana stopped.

The writer stopped.

The old man stopped.

The children stopped.

Tarzan...

slowly raised the banana peel like a weapon.

The person turned.

Milo's heart stopped.

It wasn't him.

It wasn't the writer.

It wasn't the old man.

It wasn't anyone they knew.

It was...

a reader.

An ordinary person.

Sitting quietly.

Reading a book.

Milo looked at the book.

The cover was blank.

The reader turned a page.

Milo felt cold.

"Can you hear me?"

The reader continued reading.

Diana stepped forward.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Milo moved closer.

"What are you reading?"

The reader turned another page.

Milo looked at the book.

The page contained...

their room.

Their bodies.

Their faces.

Everything.

Milo whispered...

"That's us."

The reader turned another page.

The page showed...

Milo saying that sentence.

Milo stepped backward.

"No."

Another page.

Milo stepping backward.

Another.

Diana looking at him.

Another.

Tarzan raising the banana peel.

Tarzan froze.

"OH."

The reader turned the page.

A sentence appeared.

TARZAN WILL DROP THE BANANA PEEL.

Tarzan stared at it.

Then...

slowly tightened his grip.

"No."

The reader turned the page.

TARZAN WILL NOT DROP THE BANANA PEEL.

Tarzan looked confused.

Then...

angry.

"STOP CHANGING THE STORY."

The reader looked up.

For the first time...

they noticed him.

The reader smiled.

Tarzan screamed.

"IT SAW ME."

The reader's lips moved.

No sound came.

Milo stepped closer.

"What are you saying?"

The reader pointed at the page.

Milo looked.

Three words appeared.

READ THE NEXT PAGE.

Milo shook his head.

"No."

The reader smiled again.

The page turned itself.

Milo closed his eyes.

"Don't."

Diana grabbed his hand.

The page stopped.

Milo opened his eyes.

The reader was staring directly at him.

Then...

the reader spoke.

"You're late."

Milo froze.

His voice came out barely audible.

"Late for what?"

The reader smiled.

"The ending."

---

5. THE ENDING THAT WAS EARLY

The room changed.

The desk vanished.

The chair vanished.

The reader vanished.

The book remained.

Floating.

Open.

A page turned.

THE END.

Milo stared.

Tarzan whispered...

"THAT IS SUSPICIOUS."

Another page.

THE END.

Another.

THE END.

Another.

THE END.

Thousands of pages.

Every page...

THE END.

Milo looked at the writer.

"What does it mean?"

The writer's face was pale.

"It means the ending came first."

The old man shook his head.

"No."

The writer looked at him.

"You know this."

The old man whispered...

"I remember."

Milo turned.

"Remember what?"

The old man stared at the book.

"The first time."

"What first time?"

"When the ending appeared..."

He swallowed.

"...before the beginning."

Milo stepped closer.

"What happened?"

The old man looked at him.

"Nothing."

Milo frowned.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing happened."

The writer whispered...

"That's why they created the perfect world."

Milo turned.

"What?"

The writer continued.

"They were trying to prevent anything from happening."

Diana stared.

"The perfect world."

The writer nodded.

"No accidents."

"No pain."

"No death."

"No mistakes."

The old man finished...

"No story."

Milo's eyes widened.

"They weren't protecting the world."

The writer shook his head.

"They were preventing the next sentence."

The book trembled.

The page changed.

THE PERFECT WORLD FAILED.

Milo whispered...

"Because mistakes create stories."

The writer nodded.

"Yes."

Another page.

THE ERROR LEARNED TO READ.

Milo looked at the darkness.

"Then..."

He swallowed.

"...what happens when the error finishes reading?"

Silence.

The book turned.

One page.

Two.

Three.

The pages began turning faster.

Tarzan grabbed Milo.

"WE SHOULD PROBABLY LEAVE."

Milo nodded.

"Agreed."

They turned.

The door was gone.

Milo stared.

"No."

The reader's voice came from behind them.

"You can't leave."

Milo turned.

The reader stood there.

Holding the book.

The reader smiled.

"Not until you reach the end."

Milo stepped forward.

"Then show me."

The reader looked surprised.

"What?"

Milo stared.

"Show me the end."

The reader's smile disappeared.

The writer whispered...

"Milo."

Milo continued.

"You've been reading us."

The reader said nothing.

"You've been changing us."

Nothing.

"You've been opening every ending."

The reader's eyes lowered.

Milo stepped closer.

"Then finish it."

The reader looked at the book.

"I can't."

"Why?"

The reader whispered...

"Because I don't know what happens."

Milo froze.

The reader looked at him.

"That's why I kept reading."

Silence.

Milo's expression softened.

"You were afraid."

The reader nodded.

"I wanted certainty."

Diana whispered...

"And you created perfection."

The reader shook their head.

"No."

They looked at the book.

"The story created it."

The writer stepped forward.

"Who gave it permission?"

The reader answered...

"You did."

The writer froze.

"What?"

The reader pointed at Milo.

"He did."

Milo stared.

"Me?"

The reader nodded.

"You asked for the next episode."

Silence.

Tarzan slowly looked at Milo.

"YOU?"

Milo swallowed.

"I..."

The reader continued.

"Every time you reached the end..."

The pages fluttered.

"...you asked what happened next."

Milo remembered.

Every time.

Every ending.

Every continuation.

Every new door.

The reader whispered...

"And the story answered."

---

6. THE QUESTION AFTER THE END

The book opened by itself.

A sentence appeared.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Milo stared.

The sentence changed.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE END?

Then...

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE NEXT EPISODE?

Then...

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE LAST EPISODE?

Milo stepped backward.

"No."

The words multiplied.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE LAST WORD?

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE LAST READER?

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE LAST MEMORY?

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EVERYTHING?

The writer shouted...

"STOP!"

The pages stopped.

One final sentence remained.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER NOTHING?

Silence.

Milo stared.

Diana whispered...

"Don't answer."

Milo nodded.

The old man shook his head.

"That's the trap."

Tarzan looked at the page.

Then...

raised one finger.

Everyone turned.

"Tarzan?"

He cleared his throat.

"I HAVE AN ANSWER."

Milo immediately shook his head.

"No."

Tarzan continued.

"NOTHING."

Everyone stared.

The book trembled.

Tarzan smiled.

"IF NOTHING HAPPENS AFTER NOTHING..."

He spread his arms.

"...THEN WE ARE DONE."

Silence.

The book...

closed.

Everyone froze.

Milo whispered...

"Did that work?"

The writer stared at the book.

"I don't know."

The darkness disappeared.

The reader disappeared.

The room disappeared.

The pages disappeared.

The universe...

became white.

Milo looked around.

Nothing.

Diana.

Tarzan.

The writer.

The old man.

The children.

The boy.

All there.

Alive.

No voices.

No pages.

No darkness.

No story.

Tarzan smiled.

"WE WON."

Milo stared.

"Don't say that."

"WHY?"

"Because..."

Milo looked around.

"...stories hate that."

Nothing happened.

Tarzan smiled wider.

"WE WON."

Still nothing.

He raised both arms.

"WE ACTUALLY WON."

Nothing.

Milo laughed.

Diana laughed.

The children laughed.

The writer laughed.

Even the old man smiled.

Tarzan began dancing.

"NO MORE EPISODES."

Milo smiled.

"Maybe."

Tarzan stopped.

"What?"

Milo looked at him.

"Maybe."

Tarzan's face fell.

"No."

Milo shrugged.

"It's possible."

Tarzan grabbed him.

"DO NOT SAY MAYBE."

Milo laughed.

Then...

something happened.

A tiny sound.

Behind them.

A page turning.

Everyone stopped.

Milo slowly turned.

There was no book.

No reader.

No room.

Nothing.

Then...

another page turned.

Milo whispered...

"No."

A third.

Then...

a fourth.

Diana held his hand.

The writer closed his eyes.

The old man whispered...

"It isn't over."

Tarzan slowly lifted the banana peel.

"WE DISCUSSED THIS."

The white space cracked.

A single sentence appeared.

NOTHING WAS THE MISTAKE.

Milo stared.

The writer whispered...

"Of course."

Milo looked at him.

"What?"

The writer's face had gone pale.

"We assumed nothing was the absence of something."

He pointed at the sentence.

"But nothing..."

The crack widened.

"...is still something."

---

7. THE THING THAT EXISTED BEFORE EXISTENCE

The crack opened.

There was no darkness behind it.

There was...

nothing.

Not black.

Not empty.

Not blank.

Something deeper.

Milo felt himself disappearing simply by looking at it.

Diana grabbed him.

"Milo!"

He stepped back.

"I saw something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

The old man whispered...

"That's because it has no name."

The writer stared into the crack.

"No."

Milo looked at him.

"What?"

The writer shook his head.

"It shouldn't exist."

Tarzan looked at him.

"YOU HAVE SAID THAT ABOUT MANY THINGS."

The writer pointed.

"Not like this."

A shape began emerging.

Not a creature.

Not a person.

Not an object.

A rule.

A rule becoming visible.

Milo's mind hurt.

He couldn't understand what he was seeing.

It looked...

like the absence of an answer.

The boy with the bleeding knee whispered...

"It's awake."

The nameless child looked at him.

"What is it?"

The boy answered...

"The first question."

Milo froze.

The old man whispered...

"No."

Diana looked at him.

"What?"

The old man stared.

"The first question wasn't..."

He swallowed.

"...what should exist?"

Milo remembered.

THE QUESTION THAT DREAMED GOD.

He whispered...

"It was before that."

The writer nodded.

"Before God."

The boy whispered...

"Before the universe."

The child added...

"Before the first sentence."

Tarzan looked confused.

"THEN WHAT WAS THERE?"

The thing answered.

"Why?"

Everyone froze.

Milo felt the word enter him.

Why.

Not a question.

A wound.

A door.

A beginning.

The thing spoke again.

"Why?"

The universe shook.

The thing continued.

"Why should anything exist?"

Milo stepped forward.

"Because..."

He stopped.

He didn't know.

The thing smiled.

"Exactly."

The perfect world trembled somewhere far away.

The reader's room collapsed.

The pages began burning.

The writer shouted...

"Don't answer it!"

Milo turned.

"Why?"

The writer stared at him.

Too late.

The thing smiled wider.

"You asked."

Milo's blood went cold.

The thing moved closer.

"You always ask."

Diana stepped between them.

"Then I'll answer."

Milo grabbed her.

"No."

She looked at him.

"I know."

She smiled.

"That's why."

The thing turned toward her.

"Why?"

Diana looked directly at it.

"Because we don't know."

The thing stopped.

Diana continued.

"That's what makes us alive."

The thing stared.

Diana's voice strengthened.

"We don't know what happens next."

Milo looked at her.

"We make mistakes."

The boy nodded.

"We hurt."

The child said...

"We forget."

The old man whispered...

"We lose."

The writer added...

"We write."

Tarzan raised the banana peel.

"We DROP BANANAS."

Everyone looked at him.

Tarzan shrugged.

"IMPORTANT."

Diana smiled.

"And we continue."

The thing became still.

For the first time...

it looked afraid.

Milo stepped forward.

"You wanted perfection."

The thing didn't answer.

"You wanted certainty."

Nothing.

"You wanted a world where nothing went wrong."

The thing trembled.

"But that's not a world."

Milo looked around.

"It's a sentence..."

He stared directly at it.

"...that refuses to end."

The thing whispered...

"No."

Milo nodded.

"Yes."

The thing screamed.

The universe shattered.

---

8. THE ERROR MAKES A CHOICE

Everything became white.

Then black.

Then red.

Then...

nothing.

Milo opened his eyes.

He was lying on a floor.

Diana beside him.

Tarzan nearby.

The writer.

The old man.

The children.

The boy.

Everyone alive.

Milo sat up.

"Where are we?"

Diana looked around.

"I don't know."

Milo smiled.

For the first time...

that answer felt good.

Tarzan stood.

"IS THERE FOOD?"

Milo laughed.

"Some things never change."

Tarzan looked around.

Then...

his face fell.

"No bananas."

Milo sighed.

"Tarzan."

Tarzan pointed.

"THIS IS CLEARLY A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT."

The writer laughed.

The old man smiled.

The children laughed.

Diana leaned against Milo.

Everything felt...

normal.

Not perfect.

Not broken.

Just...

unfinished.

Milo looked ahead.

A road.

A forest.

A mountain.

A sky.

No cracks.

No voices.

No pages.

No reader.

Milo took a breath.

"We're free."

The writer looked at him.

"Maybe."

Milo smiled.

"Maybe."

Tarzan groaned.

"STOP SAYING MAYBE."

They began walking.

One step.

Then another.

Then another.

Nothing happened.

The world didn't correct them.

No voice.

No page.

No sentence.

Milo looked at the boy.

"You never told us your name."

The boy smiled.

"I know."

Milo frowned.

"What?"

The boy looked ahead.

"Because I don't have one yet."

Diana smiled.

"Maybe you'll choose one."

The boy nodded.

"Maybe."

Tarzan screamed.

"NO."

Everyone laughed.

They continued walking.

Behind them...

something moved.

Milo didn't see it.

Diana didn't see it.

The writer didn't see it.

The old man didn't see it.

Tarzan certainly didn't see it.

But the boy did.

He stopped.

Milo turned.

"What?"

The boy stared behind them.

His face had changed.

"What is it?"

The boy whispered...

"The reader."

Milo turned.

Nothing.

"Where?"

The boy pointed.

At the ground.

A small black mark.

A single word.

WAIT.

Milo stared.

Then...

the word disappeared.

The boy smiled.

"It left."

Milo nodded.

"Good."

They walked on.

The boy looked back one final time.

The black mark returned.

This time...

it said something else.

READ.

The boy's smile disappeared.

---

9. THE LAST PAGE THAT WASN'T THERE

Night came.

They found a house.

Old.

Small.

Imperfect.

The door squeaked.

The window was cracked.

The table had one uneven leg.

The fireplace smoked.

Tarzan smiled.

"BEAUTIFUL."

Milo looked at him.

"You like it?"

Tarzan nodded.

"YES."

He touched the crooked table.

"IT IS TERRIBLE."

He smiled.

"I TRUST IT."

Diana laughed.

They sat together.

For the first time...

nobody was running.

Nobody was being corrected.

Nobody was dying.

Nobody was being rewritten.

Milo looked around.

"This feels strange."

Diana leaned against him.

"Peace?"

"No."

"What then?"

"An ending."

The writer looked up.

"Don't."

Milo smiled.

"I didn't mean it like that."

The old man stared into the fire.

"Endings are dangerous."

Milo looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because someone always asks what comes after."

Silence.

Tarzan slowly looked at Milo.

Milo raised both hands.

"Not me."

Everyone laughed.

Then...

the fire went out.

The room became dark.

A tiny sound came from the table.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Milo stood.

"Did you hear that?"

Everyone froze.

The writer reached for his pen.

The pen was gone.

He stared at his empty hand.

"No."

Milo looked at the table.

Something was writing.

Not with a pen.

Not with a hand.

The letters appeared directly in the wood.

S.

O.

M.

E.

O.

N.

E.

Milo whispered...

"Someone."

The word continued.

SOMEONE IS READING.

Diana grabbed his hand.

Tarzan stood.

"WHO?"

The wood answered.

YOU.

Tarzan looked offended.

"ME?"

The letters changed.

NO.

Tarzan relaxed.

Then...

YOU.

Tarzan screamed.

"THIS IS PERSONAL."

Milo looked at the writer.

"Can you stop it?"

The writer shook his head.

"I don't have my pen."

"Where is it?"

The writer looked around.

"I don't know."

The old man stood.

"That's not your pen."

The writer turned.

"What?"

The old man pointed toward the window.

Outside...

someone stood.

Holding a pen.

Milo stepped closer.

The figure was small.

Too small to be an adult.

A child.

The child raised the pen.

Milo whispered...

"Who is that?"

The child outside smiled.

Then wrote something in the air.

The words appeared on the window.

YOU FORGOT ONE.

Milo froze.

"One what?"

The child wrote again.

ONE MISTAKE.

The window cracked.

Diana whispered...

"We didn't forget."

The child smiled.

The writer shook his head.

"Yes."

Milo turned.

"What?"

The writer looked terrified.

"We forgot..."

He swallowed.

"...the first mistake."

Milo stared.

"But we found it."

The writer shook his head.

"No."

He pointed toward the boy.

"We found the boy."

Milo looked at the boy.

The boy stared at the window.

The child outside...

was staring directly at him.

The boy whispered...

"I remember now."

Milo stepped closer.

"What?"

The boy's eyes filled with tears.

"My name."

Silence.

"What is it?"

The boy looked at Milo.

"I was the first reader."

Milo froze.

Diana gasped.

The writer dropped to his knees.

The old man closed his eyes.

Tarzan whispered...

"OH."

The boy continued.

"I read the ending."

Milo stared.

"And then?"

The boy whispered...

"I wanted another."

The room shook.

"Another ending."

The child outside smiled.

"And another."

The walls cracked.

"And another."

The floor split.

"And another."

The ceiling disappeared.

Milo grabbed Diana.

The writer shouted...

"THE LOOP."

The boy began crying.

"I didn't know."

Milo held his shoulders.

"What did you do?"

The boy whispered...

"I created the next."

A page appeared in the sky.

Then another.

Then another.

Millions.

Billions.

Endless pages.

All turning.

All at once.

The boy screamed...

"I CREATED YOU."

Milo froze.

"What?"

The boy looked at him.

"You aren't the first Milo."

Silence.

"You are the continuation."

Milo couldn't breathe.

The boy whispered...

"And every Milo before you..."

The sky filled with faces.

Thousands.

Millions.

Milo Finch.

Milo Finch.

Milo Finch.

Milo Finch.

Milo Finch.

The boy finished...

"...asked what happened next."

Milo looked upward.

The pages began falling.

Diana grabbed him.

"Run!"

They ran.

Tarzan ran.

The writer ran.

The old man ran.

The children ran.

The boy ran.

The house disappeared behind them.

The forest disappeared.

The road disappeared.

The sky disappeared.

Everything became pages.

Milo looked ahead.

A single page remained.

He reached for it.

The page turned.

A sentence appeared.

THIS IS NOT EPISODE EIGHTY.

Milo stopped.

Diana stopped.

Tarzan stopped.

The writer stared.

The old man whispered...

"No."

The sentence changed.

THIS IS THE FIRST EPISODE.

Milo's heart stopped.

Another sentence appeared.

EVERYTHING BEFORE THIS...

The page trembled.

...WAS THE MISTAKE.

The writer screamed...

"NO!"

The page turned.

One final line.

And beneath it...

a name.

MILO FINCH.

Then...

another.

DIANA.

Another.

TARZAN.

Another.

THE WRITER.

Another.

THE OLD MAN.

Another.

THE CHILDREN.

Another.

THE BOY.

Then...

one more.

THE READER.

Milo stared.

"Where?"

The page was blank.

The reader's name...

was missing.

The darkness returned.

The thing that existed before the first sentence whispered...

"Because the reader..."

A pause.

"...is not outside."

Milo froze.

The voice continued...

"The reader..."

The page turned itself.

"...is inside."

Everyone screamed.

The pages folded inward.

The universe collapsed into a single sentence.

The sentence appeared before Milo.

He read it.

I AM READING YOU.

Milo whispered...

"No."

The sentence changed.

I AM YOU READING YOURSELF.

Milo stepped backward.

Diana grabbed him.

Tarzan dropped the banana peel.

The writer's pen returned to his hand.

The old man began crying.

The children disappeared.

The boy disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

Except Milo.

And the page.

Milo stared at the words.

Then...

a new sentence appeared.

MILO FINCH WILL NOW WRITE THE NEXT SENTENCE.

Milo shook his head.

"No."

The pen in his hand moved.

Not because he wanted it to.

The tip touched the page.

Milo fought.

His hand trembled.

The pen began writing.

Milo screamed...

"STOP!"

The page answered...

YOU CAN'T.

The pen wrote one letter.

T.

Milo's eyes widened.

Then...

O.

Then...

B.

Then...

E.

Then...

C.

Then...

O.

Then...

N.

Then...

T.

Then...

I.

Then...

N.

Then...

U.

Then...

E.

The pen stopped.

Milo stared at the words.

TO BE CONTINUED.

He breathed.

Slowly.

Then...

the letters began moving.

They rearranged themselves.

TO BE...

came first.

Then...

CONTINUED...

disappeared.

Milo whispered...

"What?"

The page remained blank.

Then a final word appeared.

READ.

Milo looked up.

Behind him...

someone was standing.

He heard breathing.

Slow.

Quiet.

Familiar.

Milo turned.

There was another Milo.

Not older.

Not younger.

Not a copy.

A Milo who looked exactly like him...

except for the eyes.

The other Milo smiled.

"Hello."

Milo stared.

"Who are you?"

The other Milo answered...

"The one who reads."

Milo's blood ran cold.

"Then who am I?"

The other Milo smiled.

"The one being read."

Silence.

The universe...

held its breath.

The other Milo stepped forward.

And whispered...

"Now..."

He opened the book.

"...let's see what happens next."

The lights went out.

The page turned.

And somewhere...

far beyond the first mistake...

something laughed.

Something that had never been written.

Something that had never been read.

Something that was now...

holding the pen.
