Fu Sheng did not allow his gaze to linger on the isolated building for more than a heartbeat. Years of harsh experience had taught him that curiosity attracted unwanted attention faster than almost anything else. He lowered his eyes once more and continued walking at the steady, methodical pace expected of an ordinary servant.
Beside him, An Li did exactly the same. Neither of them spoke again until they had rounded another corner, slipping behind a dense row of flowering shrubs that lined the stone walkway.
Only then did An Li let out the breath she had been holding. "...That wasn't part of Wei Meilan's information."
Fu Sheng nodded almost imperceptibly. "No. The guards have either been stationed there permanently... or something has changed recently."
An Li frowned, her eyes scanning their surroundings. "I don't like surprises."
"Neither do I."
