Chapter 44 - Chapter 44

The alarm did not hum. It tore through the sub-level filtration grids with a high-frequency acoustic shock that instantly shattered the glass lenses of the remaining diagnostic monitors.

Kaelen's gray eyes snapped open. He was on his feet before the echo cleared the concrete walls, his hand slamming flat against the armory locker to stabilize his gravity. The anti-radiation counter-agent in his marrow was still maintaining the chemical freeze against his side, but the concrete deck beneath his boots was vibrating with a continuous, low-amplitude tremor that didn't match the mechanical pulse of the city generators.

"The perimeter is gone," SC said. He stepped through the heavy steel threshold of the staging bay, his long dark cloak soaked with the toxic ash of the melted iron-wood plains. His vibrant green eyes were dark under his hood, his fingers locked around the interface frame of a broad-sector military receiver. "The data lines from Area A just went dead. Lin Leng executed the protocol before her team evacuated the upper containment network."

"She triggered the beast tide," Kaelen said, his short sentences falling with a cold, absolute finality.

"Worse," SC replied, jamming the module into the main map display. "She didn't just route the local migration lines toward the gate. She overrode the orbital acoustic beacons. She is using the high-frequency grid to pull the invaders from the deep rift zones to clean all traces of the lab experiments. They are systematically purging the surface blocks to keep the Imperial Council from auditing the processing records."

The holographic map bloomed into a maelstrom of flashing crimson alerts. A vast, multi-tiered wave of grey thermal signatures, thousands of apex predators and heavy Star Bears whose habitats had been destabilized was surging out of the smoldering ruins of the forest, driving straight toward the iron gates of District D. But behind the native star beasts, crossing the atmospheric boundary lines on the long-range radar, a secondary signature was emerging.

A dense, interlocking swarm of jagged, bio-mechanical silhouettes was dropping from the outer vacuum.

"The Zergs," Jaren whispered, his face turning an ashen grey beneath his black market mask as he tracked the descending vectors. "The deep-space fleets... they're following the lifeforce radiation from the burned forest."

"Two separate planetary threats moving on the same sector," SC noted, his tone dropping its usual playful edge, shifting into the precise calculation of the throne. "The star beasts are invading from the flats to reclaim the basin, and the Zergs are dropping from above to harvest the residual energy. They are natural enemies, but humans are caught directly in the middle dying by the thousands in the outer residential blocks."

The industrial grid of District D was already a chaos of structural collapse. Through the viewports of the high-tier observation deck, Kaelen could see the primary transit lanes choked with a panicked mass of laborers and scavengers. The Imperial frontline guards had already abandoned the lower defensive walls, their speeders executing a rapid retreat toward the high-gentry sectors of Area A, leaving the C-rank populace entirely exposed to the approaching teeth.

"The tactical line belongs to us now," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into that low, resonant pitch that had guided the Fifth Army through the frontier purges. His strategic skills as a decorated General re-engaged in an instant, the cold logic of the battlefield overriding the physical strain in his side. He turned toward the console, his finger slamming onto the primary sector broadcast button. "Lord SC. Tiran. Shuang. We organize the resistance from the central market square. We don't have the ammunition to hold a three-point wedge against both swarms, so we choose our trades with extreme precision."

"The logistics frame is ready," Shuang said, her gold hair pulled tight behind her leather helmet as she checked the power cells on her armored transport chassis.

"Jaren," Kaelen commanded. "Take the transport vehicle and two logistics frames from Level 15. Your objective is non-combatant extraction. Organize the immediate evacuation of the children and the elders toward the sub-level black market drainage tubes. They are the only sectors with enough lead-lining to mask their thermal signatures from the Zerg orbital sweeps."

"What about the frontline units?" Jaren asked, his hand shaking but his posture steadying under the General's gaze. "The local defense councils are in total panic."

"They aren't soldiers anymore; they're a crowd," Kaelen said coldly. "Move the youth and the old out first. The rest of the line stays on the concrete."

By 05:00 hours, the primary gate of District D gave way under the immense kinetic pressure of the star beast vanguard. A massive fifteen-meter Star Wolf pack tore through the iron-reinforced barriers, their steel-plated jaws snapping through the steel frames as they poured into the residential lanes.

The fight broke across the concrete grid with a terrifying, wet violence.

The air was thick with the scent of burning fuel, sulfur, and the raw iron of human blood. The Zerg bio-spores were already dropping from the leaden clouds, their needle-like projectiles piercing through the roofs of the containment blocks, turning the narrow alleys into a crossfire zone between the native invaders and the deep-space swarm.

In the middle of the market square, the breakdown of structural order was absolute. A group of able-bodied laborers and mid-tier merchants—men who had previously run the black market rackets—were frantically crowding around the secondary extraction rail, humiliating the weaker outcasts, pushing women and elderly citizens into the dirt to secure their own transit onto the remaining logistics cars.

"Clear the track!" a large scrap broker roared, his heavy wrench swinging wildly to drive a group of frightened children away from the carriage door. "The C-rank slots are full! Get out of the lane if you don't carry contribution points!"

"Stand down, trash," an iron voice boomed through the smoke.

Kaelen stepped into the center of the rail platform, his tall frame wrapped in black combat gear, his left hand holding a heavy-duty high-frequency lance he had pulled from the fortress vault. He didn't issue a secondary warning; he brought the butt of the lance down with crushing S-rank force across the broker's shoulder, fracturing the bone instantly and dropping the larger man to his knees in the metallic silt.

"The General's directive is absolute," Kaelen said, his gray eyes completely devoid of warmth as his vanguard squad formed a rigid wall of steel behind his boots. "The children and the elders occupy the carriage first. Any man who shoves an outcast to secure a transit slot will be left on the tracks to clear the first Zerg wave with his bare hands."

Tiran stepped into the clearance lane, his heavy hydraulic wrench extended as he manually hauled a fallen woman and her child upward into the transport cabin, his bulk completely blocking the panicked crowd from rushing the doors. "Move the line inside! Six seconds until the rear barrier collapses!"

SC stood on top of a concrete utility box twenty paces ahead, his cloak flaring as his hands flew across his portable data array to monitor the approaching thermal signatures. "Kaelen! The Star Bear vanguard has cleared the third block! The Zerg interceptors are dropping down from the northern sky to lock the basin! We are entirely out of distance!"

"Hold the wedge!" Kaelen ordered, his strategic calculation locking onto the geographical bottleneck of the narrow market street. He raised his lance, the tip blazing with a cold, yellow defensive light as the first wave of grey beast-hybrids and Zerg drones crashed through the smoke of the alleyway, the real planetary war erupting before their eyes.
