POV: CHASE
The pact has rules. We wrote them on nothing, signed them with nothing, and they are binding in the way only agreements between people who know each other's worst selves can be binding — which is to say, completely.
The rules are simple. We hurt each other on purpose and in public, which is different from what we were doing before because before we were doing it by accident and calling it love. Now we do it by design and call it entertainment, which the press seems to prefer anyway.
The first interview is mine. A morning show, nationally broadcast, the kind with a couch and a host with perfect teeth who has been briefed to keep it light. I sit across from her in a suit that costs more than most people's monthly rent and I give her exactly what she wants, which is everything except the truth.
"Chase, the public can't seem to stop talking about you and Vivian Ashford. What do you make of all the attention?"
