Chapter 85 - Chapter 85: Captain America Is Slacking Off, Mordo Comes to the Rescue

Something felt off. Steve Rogers lifted his shield, striking the Earth Demon that had grabbed Johnny's head, knocking it off balance and rescuing him.

"Where the hell did you crawl out from? Get lost!" Steve shouted.

The Earth Demon roared furiously, humiliated by being thrown aside in front of the other demons.

[Earth Demon: A low-level demon with an elemental body. Its weakness lies in its soul. It can be harmed by Tarot Qigong.]

Steve drew his pistol and emptied all twelve rounds into the creature, blowing off half its head.

At that moment, Tony Stark arrived in his Iron Man suit, landing with a metallic thud.

"Hey, Cap, don't forget I'm here."

The Earth Demon sneered, its half-blown face rapidly regenerating. Physical attacks clearly had no effect.

"Oh, crap! What the hell is that thing?" Tony swore in disbelief. This defied all logic — and science!

"Don't curse, Tony. The end of science is metaphysics!" Steve called out, holstering his gun and charging forward.

Boom!

The Earth Demon swung its massive, tire-sized fist toward Steve — but he dodged effortlessly. The fist slammed into the ground, cracking the asphalt like a spider web.

Steve countered, his own fist glowing with energy as it smashed into the demon's head.

The Earth Demon, standing nearly two meters tall and weighing over three hundred kilograms, shattered instantly. Though not dead, it was severely weakened.

Terror filled its broken face — it couldn't believe a mere mortal had overpowered it.

Tony was dumbfounded. "We're supposed to be on the same level, Cap! Are you cheating?"

"Tony, I'll leave this one to you. Demons like this are rare — be careful," Steve said calmly. "Johnny, you handle the others. I've got another mission."

Before either could respond, Steve leapt across several containers, disappearing into the night.

Johnny Blaze's emotions were mixed as he watched the man who'd once stolen his ex-girlfriend now saving him — and giving him orders.

"Don't think I'll listen to you just because you're Captain America," he muttered — though he still swung his fiery chain, wrapping it around the invisible Wind Demon.

Tony, meanwhile, took out a special containment capsule. The reinforced glass was designed to block energy waves — hopefully effective against spiritual entities.

Though what he'd just witnessed defied science, Tony's curiosity was burning. If demons truly existed, perhaps studying them could inspire new armor upgrades!

Just as he looked up to assess the situation, the Earth Demon broke free and punched him across the docks.

"Oh, shit!" Tony yelled, firing a mini-missile in retaliation.

The Earth Demon caught the missile, grinning mockingly.

"Too weak."

BOOM!

The missile exploded, blasting the demon's body to pieces once again.

Ghost Rider landed nearby, his flaming skull reflecting in the demon's fragmented eyes. He activated the Penance Stare — the Eye of Judgment.

Any being guilty of sin would have its soul burned by the flames of vengeance. The greater the sin, the hotter the fire.

A soul, fragile by nature, could be reduced to ash in seconds.

Truly terrifying — but not invincible.

If a killer genuinely believed their murders were acts of salvation, the Penance Stare would have no effect.

It sounded abstract, but it was true: judgment worked only on those who felt guilt.

As long as one's heart believed in innocence, the Eye of Judgment was powerless.

Tony's scientific mind couldn't process what he was seeing.

"What… what's the logic here? What law of physics explains this?"

Ghost Rider ignored him, turning toward the remaining Water and Fire Demons.

Far in the distance, Charles Xavier and Mystique watched, both wide-eyed.

Their scalps tingled.

Then Charles grew curious — and a little excited.

"Raven, do you think that man on fire is a mutant like us?"

Mystique, however, was only concerned about where Steve had gone.

"I don't know, Charles. Do you think Steve's in danger?"

Charles noticed the way she said his name — that soft, affectionate tone. He didn't dissuade her. In fact, he hoped she'd settle down someday. He never had romantic feelings for her — to him, Mystique was like a sister.

"No, the Captain's been through countless battles. He's seen everything. Don't worry," he assured her.

Meanwhile, Iron Man was struggling against the Fire Demon. Ghost Rider was occupied with the Water Demon, unable to assist.

Against terrorists and arms dealers, Tony's armor was a god-tier weapon — a dimensional reduction attack.

But against an elemental demon? His suit's power was meaningless.

His gleaming red-and-gold armor was now charred black, smoke rising from the joints.

Seeing Tony falter, Charles decided to intervene.

BOOM!

Another fiery blast sent Iron Man crashing into a stack of containers.

Inside his helmet, Tony's mind raced.

"Jarvis, ideas?"

"Sir, there's a box full of fire extinguishers nearby. Perhaps we can use those?"

At the same time, police sirens blared. Officers had surrounded the pier, staring in horror at the flaming creature before them.

Instead of fleeing, they did what Americans do best — they opened fire.

Rat-tat-tat!

Bullets flew through the flames, ricocheting off metal containers without leaving a scratch.

"Ants!" the Fire Demon growled, turning his fury on them.

In seconds, several officers were engulfed in flames, their patrol cars exploding one after another.

The docks became a sea of fire.

Charles stepped forward, pressing two fingers to his temple. His psychic power froze the Fire Demon mid-motion — but the backlash was brutal. His mind burned as if touching the flames directly.

"Tony! Hurry! I can't hold him much longer!" he shouted through gritted teeth.

Iron Man saw his chance. Grabbing a fire extinguisher, he sprayed the demon, dousing it with freezing carbon dioxide.

The flames sputtered and dimmed. Then Tony launched another missile straight at the demon's head.

BOOM!

The explosion shattered its skull into pieces.

"Is it dead?" Tony asked cautiously.

"No… physical attacks won't work," Charles gasped.

At that moment, a black man in a long coat appeared — carrying a staff at his side.

It was Karl Mordo from Kamar-Taj.

Without hesitation, Mordo cast a spell, annihilating the Fire Demon's soul before opening a glowing portal. He flung the remains inside and closed it instantly.

Without even acknowledging Tony or Charles, he turned and headed toward Ghost Rider, who was still struggling with the Water Demon threatening to flood the docks.

Tony blinked behind his visor. "What the—? Another supernatural guy?"

Shock quickly turned to excitement.

Magic was simply science that hadn't been explained yet.

If he could somehow integrate that power into his armor… the potential would be limitless!

New phenomena always led to new breakthroughs — and Tony Stark loved breakthroughs.

"I don't know," Charles murmured, still in awe. "But one thing's for sure… New York is full of surprises tonight."
