Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: Captain America’s Decision

S.H.I.E.L.D. records contained some mentions of mutants, but there was no detailed information about Charles Xavier or Raven Darkhölme.

What they did have were research notes about the awakening of superhuman abilities during World War II and the military's more recent "Project X."

That project involved familiar names—Wolverine, Deadpool, Sabretooth, and others.

Originally, Project X had been running quietly in secret. But after the series of events that changed the world—Captain America's revival, Iron Man's emergence, the Hulk's rampage, and the creation of Abomination—the project's pace suddenly accelerated.

It was as if the military was desperate to create obedient, loyal super soldiers, capable of matching the power of these new "heroes" in case any of them ever went rogue.

"Your eyes are beautiful," Steve said to Mystique with a calm smile. "Brighter than any gemstone I've ever seen."

It wasn't an empty compliment.

Mystique could transform into anyone—not only could she imitate faces, but also fingerprints, eye patterns, and other microscopic details that were impossible to fake.

Yet, her deepest insecurity lay in her true appearance—short orange hair, dark blue skin marked with shifting, scale-like runes. Most people recoiled when they saw it. Even those who claimed to be open-minded found themselves instinctively disgusted.

Charles, who stood beside them, was eager to steer the conversation elsewhere. Knowing Steve's charm and confidence, he feared his "sister" would end up falling for the man right before his eyes.

Mystique blinked in surprise, studying Steve's face carefully to see if he was teasing her.

"Don't you think I'm... strange-looking?" she asked quietly.

If it had been an ordinary woman asking, Steve could have easily responded with another compliment. But Mystique's true form was nothing like her human disguise.

"Beautiful faces are common," Steve said softly, raising his glass and offering her one. "But interesting souls? Those are rare."

He clinked his glass against hers and continued, "I've seen the noblest aliens and the vilest humans. You can't judge a person by their appearance."

His words struck a chord in Mystique's heart. She couldn't help but be intrigued by this man who saw past the surface.

Even Charles was curious. He discreetly reached out with his telepathic power, trying to read Steve's thoughts—

—but the next second, he gasped in pain!

It was as if a sharp needle had pierced his mind. His psychic connection was cut off instantly.

"Charles! What's wrong?" Mystique asked anxiously.

She had feelings for Charles, but his constant indifference frustrated her. Seeing him suddenly in pain filled her with worry.

"I'm fine," Charles coughed awkwardly, trying to cover up his failed attempt. "It just felt like something... bit me."

Tony smirked from nearby, never one to miss an opportunity. "Could it be syphilis? I told you not to bring random girls home—some of them might be infected!"

"Bah! You're the one with the disease!" Charles snapped, glaring at Tony.

What a ridiculous accusation! As if he wouldn't have his partners checked beforehand!

Rich playboys like him had their own social circles—and catching something like that would be the ultimate humiliation.

Steve suppressed a chuckle but couldn't resist adding, "Actually, syphilis isn't that bad. You're lucky it's not AIDS."

Mystique covered her mouth to hide a laugh, then tilted her head curiously. "So, Captain... why didn't you jump out of the plane back then?"

The question landed like a bombshell.

Even Tony and Charles turned to listen intently.

Nearby, an elegant blonde woman crossed her long legs and sipped her drink—Emma Frost, the White Queen. Her beauty was striking, her posture commanding.

She hadn't been paying attention to the men around her, but Mystique's question made her pause. She wasn't particularly interested in Captain America, but gossip about legends was always entertaining.

Steve gave a mysterious smile. "You know, I recently got a cat. And this morning, I found out it can do backflips."

Everyone froze for a moment.

Tony and Charles exchanged looks—and then both burst into knowing laughter.

"Ha! And you call me shameless?" Tony grinned. "You're smoother than I am!"

"I like his style," Charles added. "We could learn something from him."

Emma raised an eyebrow at Steve, mildly impressed despite herself. Captain America—who'd have thought? A charming scoundrel behind that noble smile.

What a player, she thought. Total scumbag—but skilled.

The guests at the party were all elite—rich, brilliant, or both.

Emma Frost, CEO of Frost Corporation, had grown her company's market value from three billion to ten billion dollars. She was the undisputed star of the night.

Mutants had always existed, quietly blending into human society. Showing their abilities openly would only invite fear, ridicule, or worse—government experiments.

Mystique didn't find Steve's joke strange at all. On the contrary, she thought it was funny—refreshing, even.

"Really?" she said playfully. "Can I come see your cat next time?"

Steve smiled. "Of course. Let's sit over there for now. I'd like to learn more about that unique and fascinating soul of yours."

Just as Mystique blushed slightly, Steve's expression changed.

Without warning, he pulled her into his arms, spun around, and summoned his shield from his space locker, raising it just in time—

Glass shattered. Flames burst inward.

Mystique gasped and clung to him instinctively as the shockwave rolled through the club.

Tony and Charles ducked for cover as the blast tore through the entrance. The security guards near the door were thrown off their feet.

Emma Frost dove behind a table. Her body instantly transformed into diamond form, the white light from the chandeliers reflecting off her crystalline skin.

In the chaos, she glanced toward Steve. He was crouched low, shield raised, eyes sharp and focused. Their gazes met briefly, and he gave her a small nod.

"Have we been discovered?" she murmured.

Outside, an off-road motorcycle sped past, trailing fire and destruction. Power lines exploded, windows shattered, and the street erupted into chaos.

"Raven, are you hurt?" Steve asked, still shielding her with his body.

"I'm fine... thank you," she said softly.

Her heart was racing. Being rescued by a hero—especially one as strong and steady as Steve Rogers—made it impossible to stay calm.

This was before Mystique became the cold, calculating femme fatale she would one day be. Back then, she was still young, still curious, still open to being moved.

Steve's presence, his strength and warmth, had captured her full attention.

If he had used the same charm on Emma Frost, she would have rolled her eyes and laughed it off.

But Mystique? She was already caught in the moment.

There was, after all, an art to seduction—and Steve Rogers was a master of it.
