By the time Steve left, Betty didn't even have the strength to lift a finger.
The pain of being broken up with by Bruce Banner last night didn't seem so unbearable anymore. After all, the shortcut to her heart had been traveled back and forth for several hours. In a way, they were still connected.
Shortly after leaving, Steve went to find Banner and handed over the flash drive that Betty had given him.
It wasn't because he felt guilty toward Banner — he simply believed that completing his mission was the most important thing.
Ding! "There's a kind of love for the mission called letting go and completing it."
New Skill Acquired: Disguise of Justice
Disguise of Justice: As the Captain, you are always right and always just.
Minor offenses can be disguised as righteousness — even slacking off or poaching employees. (Note: Major crimes can't be disguised.)
Cool.
I can only say that being "Captain" really has its perks. Seventy years ago, I planted the tree — is it too much to enjoy the shade now?
S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters
Steve walked into the Deputy Secretary-General's office with a bouquet of roses in hand, while the female Winter Soldier, Heidi, stood guard outside.
Inside, Sharon Carter and Maria Hill were deep in discussion.
When he saw them together, Steve didn't feel awkward at all. Instead, he confidently handed each of them a rose.
Hill took a sniff of the flower, then leaned closer to Steve with a teasing smile.
"It doesn't match your perfume. Whose scent is this?"
"It's from Betty Ross," Steve replied smoothly. "I met Banner earlier. He asked me to deliver a breakup letter to Betty. Then he got drunk, and… well, that happened."
He sat down in the office chair without hesitation, pulled both women close — one on each side — and wrapped his arms around them.
"I'm a bit tired after fighting the Hulk," he said with a smile. "How have you two been lately? Any trouble? I can help fix it.
If not, let's have dinner tonight. I've been into oriental food recently — even learned to cook it myself. It's delicious!"
Sharon and Hill exchanged helpless yet amused looks.
They felt exasperated by their husband's flirtatiousness, but at the same time, they couldn't help but feel happy that he still showed them affection.
"My husband has his reasons," Sharon said with a soft laugh. "Betty's actually quite pitiful. Banner's been missing for almost six years, and she's still holding on to him."
Thanks to the Disguise of Justice effect, as long as Steve didn't commit something heinous, his actions automatically wore a cloak of righteousness.
Of course, if he nuked a city, that disguise wouldn't save him.
"Just spoil him," Hill teased with a smile, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. The simple motion carried a charm that could mesmerize anyone.
"Honey, you've got a mission tomorrow," Sharon reminded him. "It's to rescue the kidnapped Deka. The Security Council has already paid the fee — they want the entire gang eliminated. No survivors."
Sharon often helped Steve manage his missions and schedule. They were already close to marriage and had no secrets between them — except for the existence of the system.
"What about the vampires?" Steve suddenly remembered Deka — the one who had brought out the vampire princess, Nissa.
Heh, didn't expect that rich kid to lose to me, Captain America!
"They've planned a raid on the harvester base in three days," Sharon said. "Nissa warned us to be careful — we should bring Blade with us."
Sharon's tone carried a sense of authority. She was becoming more and more like a high-ranking executive — elegant, composed, and alluring. If she added gold-rimmed glasses, she'd be more suited for… well, secretary duties than actual work.
"Alright," Steve said. "But we can't let the Rockefeller family get off easy. We'll put some pressure on them, maybe stir up a bit of trouble.
I'm planning to reach out to the Green Goblin — let's make things messy for the Rockefellers and cut a few pieces off the Gorgon faction backing them. Later, we can inherit what's left."
The righteous Captain America of old would never stoop to such underhanded tactics — but this wasn't the same Captain America anymore.
The worse a man behaved, the more women seemed to love him.
Sharon and Hill's eyes sparkled as they looked at him, filled with affection that was hard to hide.
"Steve, I've been assigned to locate Spider-Man," Hill said with a playful tone. "He's sharp and hard to track, so you'll have to help me when the time comes!"
Who said an icy beauty couldn't act coy? Hill was cold and commanding toward everyone else, but in front of Steve, she was affectionate and teasing — and with her training as an agent, she could bend in every sense of the word.
"Spider-Man?" Steve thought for a moment. He'd met the kid before but hadn't interacted much.
Maybe it was time to bring him into the Avengers — another strong recruit to lighten the Captain's workload.
"I know. I'll keep an eye on him," Steve said with a grin. "Now let's head home for dinner… and then I'll eat you both after."
Sharon and Hill rolled their eyes playfully. If their subordinates saw them like this, jaws would drop in disbelief.
Was this the same cool, authoritative Hill and Carter? They looked more like two newlyweds teasing their husband.
The Next Day
Steve led Blade and a special forces team on a raid at a warehouse.
Inside were South American drug lords — all of whom were quickly eliminated. Even Wickman was killed on the spot.
Reporter Lois Shan, who had received the intel in advance, arrived with Daily Bugle journalists and photographers to capture exclusive footage.
Deka — the kidnapped young heir — was finally rescued, though he looked completely broken.
The once-pampered son of a wealthy family had been forced to drink foot-washing water and eat dog food for days.
At first, he'd refused, even under torture. But hunger won in the end. He pinched his nose, swallowed the filth, and endured humiliation just to survive.
He was furious — how could Captain America do something like this?!
Impossible! He convinced himself. This must be some overzealous fan acting in his name!
Later That Day
The Daily Bugle launched its new television channel.
"Hello everyone, this is Daily Bugle News.
Today, our reporter followed Captain America on a hostage rescue mission and captured exclusive combat footage.
Without further ado, let's witness the Captain's heroic power!"
On screen, Captain America charged fearlessly at the front. His shield ricocheted at impossible angles, knocking down robbers one after another.
One punch sent a 200-pound man flying more than ten meters.
A kick flipped a car sideways, crushing another criminal against the wall.
Every move showcased the perfect blend of strength and precision — the power of a super-soldier.
Female fans screamed. Male fans cheered.
Even ordinary bystanders couldn't help but admire the Captain's overwhelming might and heroic presence.
