"So, what's our next move?"
Steve Rogers read through the mission dossier containing detailed information about Deacon Frost — the villain known as "Faith" in the Blade case file.
The so-called Blood God Ritual had turned Frost into something close to immortal. Conventional weapons couldn't harm him, and even traditional vampire weaknesses — silver, garlic, sunlight — had little effect.
Because of this, the wealthy magnates who had secretly cooperated with vampires for years were now terrified.
The Rockefeller family was forced to immediately stop framing Captain America. They couldn't afford to lose S.H.I.E.L.D.'s support over such a "trivial" matter.
"Objective: eliminate Deacon Frost."
Nick Fury's tone was calm, but his eyes lingered on Steve. The Captain was becoming harder to read — outwardly upright and selfless, yet somehow exuding a subtle, almost devilish confidence.
"Has the target's location been confirmed?" Steve asked.
He didn't take Frost seriously. Immortal or not, everything had limits. Even monsters ran out of energy eventually — they were just more troublesome to deal with.
To Steve, a vampire who seemed unstoppable to ordinary humans was nothing more than a slightly stronger pest.
"He's at Boll Manor," Fury replied, pointing to a map. "Frost's invited representatives from the four major families to a 'meeting.' He wants their answer tonight."
Steve glanced at the coordinates. "That's bold of him."
"I'll chop his head off!" Blade snarled, slamming the table. The memory of his mother being turned into Frost's plaything for over twenty years — and even helping him plot against her own son — was unbearable.
The pain of being betrayed by one's own blood cut deeper than any blade.
"Frost used such despicable tricks to ambush me. He's shameless! Compared to him, Captain, you're a great man!" Blade spat.
Steve: "…"
Tony Stark burst out laughing. "Hahaha! Old Popsicle, what did you do to make him say that?"
"How should I know?" Steve replied irritably, giving Blade a sharp look.
Blade quickly raised his hands. "Don't get me wrong, Captain — I meant it as a compliment."
"Alright, enough," Fury cut in, organizing the operation. "Natasha, you'll infiltrate first and scout the area. Barton, you'll handle perimeter surveillance and make sure Frost can't escape. Tony, you'll disrupt communications and assist the Captain."
He paused, scanning the team. "Any questions? If not, meeting adjourned."
Once Fury left, the tension eased immediately.
Tony, ever the provocateur, leaned toward Blade. "Hey man, about your mom… which vampire was she really with?"
Blade's jaw clenched. "You wanna die, Stark?"
"It's fine, buddy," Tony said quickly, waving his hands. "I know emotions run high — but I've got a serious tactical question."
Blade raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"If we run into your mother during the mission… should we fight her or not?"
The room fell silent.
Even for seasoned agents, that was a cruel question. No one wanted to be the guy suggesting they kill a teammate's mother.
Steve winced inwardly. He had seen a photo of Blade's mother — she wasn't what anyone would call attractive. In fact, she looked like someone who could make a monk reconsider his vows.
That Frost could stomach that? The man must have had the guts of a god — and the taste buds of a vampire with no standards.
"If that happens," Blade said coldly, "tell me. I'll handle it myself."
Behind his sunglasses, his eyes burned with grim resolve. The next time he saw his mother would be their final farewell.
Steve looked around. "Is this really the Avengers?" he muttered. "We're just missing Thor and the Hulk."
He started to get up when Natasha Romanoff's calm voice stopped him.
"Captain, where are you going?"
"There's a press conference," Steve said, glancing back. "Interested in coming along?"
Natasha nodded immediately. She'd been thinking about the earlier smear campaign — the slander, the Senate hearings, the media storm.
The lies should have destroyed his reputation, maybe even broken him. Public opinion had turned against him.
Normally, any public figure would have rushed to clarify things — to fight back, to prove their innocence.
But not Steve Rogers.
He didn't issue a single statement. He simply vanished.
And strangely, a week later, public opinion began to shift back in his favor.
To Natasha — who knew better than anyone how manipulative the world could be — this was fascinating. Was this some new form of psychological warfare?
How could she know that Steve hadn't been planning anything at all? He had simply been too busy raiding an old Hydra base in Siberia and training the female Winter Soldier to even notice.
He genuinely didn't care about public opinion.
In his mind, as long as the world produced enough supervillains, there would always come a point when regular forces couldn't cope — and then, heroes like him would be needed again.
Why rush to clear his name when the truth would reveal itself eventually?
Now that a superpowered vampire had appeared, the same corporate elites who slandered him were groveling for help.
Why bother explaining yourself when the world would slap itself in the face for you?
And as Steve liked to joke, "If there's profit to be made, no one cares how swollen their face gets."
Tony, overhearing the discussion, rolled his eyes and decided to tag along.
He and Steve had more in common than either would admit.
According to Colonel Rhodes, the military was already circling Tony's Iron Man armor — plotting to seize it under the same excuse they used before: public safety.
They were trying to weaponize public opinion again, claiming that no private citizen should possess a weapon of mass destruction.
For Tony, that sounded awfully familiar — and uncomfortably close to what Steve had just been through.
