The late afternoon sun spilled across the lawn, basking the entire space in its warm, soft glow. The three ladies walked slowly down the clearing, followed closely by two excited dogs.
When they were closer to the cottages, Lucille slowed her steps without realizing it. She lifted her gaze, throwing it toward the rooftop of the neighboring home.
Felix was no longer there.
'Has he felt better?'
Lucille let out a quiet breath. Though she wasn't particularly close with Felix, she truly hoped that the heaviness in his mind and heart had eased even a little.
Wounds healed, but more often than not, scars were left behind. Even after a long passage of time, they remained.
Not only did the scars remind them of their terrifying memories, but they also carried phantom pain.
Lucille exhaled softly, shaking her head slightly. She resumed walking until the three of them reached the path between the cottages. The slanted sun cast elongated shadows before them.
