Chapter 40: Shadows of the Past
Night in Paris should have been a symphony of light, but for Julian Caldwell, the luxury of his hotel suite felt like a suffocating isolation cell. He tossed his expensive suit aside carelessly, loosening the tie that seemed to choke his neck. His mind was not here, not on the million-dollar contracts or the lavish dinner he had just left.
His thoughts were stuck on the phone screen from minutes ago, on Scarlett's cold gaze and the distance in her voice. Julian recognized that tone. It was the tone of someone building a wall.
"Something's wrong," Julian muttered, pacing across the thick carpet. "Very wrong."
He could not wait until morning. Uncertainty was poison to a man like Julian. With swift movements, he grabbed his phone and dialed Jonathan.
"Find out what happened on set today," Julian ordered without preamble as soon as the call connected.
