Chapter 213 - Chapter 214: Final Days Passed

Outside the isolated hell of the Riverlands, Zhan Yue sat perfectly still on the flat boulder overlooking the dark, crescent-shaped lake.

Her violet robes fluttered slightly in the chilly morning breeze. For the past two months, she had maintained an almost constant vigil over the submerged array, her vast spiritual perception gently brushing against the restrictive boundary to monitor the single, faint spark of life within.

Suddenly, her amethyst eyes snapped open, a flash of genuine, unadulterated panic breaking her usually composed demeanor.

The faint, rhythmic heartbeat she had been tracking for five weeks had violently stuttered. The life force within the deepest trench of the cavern plummeted at an alarming, catastrophic rate. It was the unmistakable signature of a mortal vessel hovering on the absolute precipice of death.

'Xiao Ning!' Zhan Yue's heart clenched.

She didn't hesitate. A brilliant flash of silver Dou Qi erupted around her as she stood up, preparing to dive directly into the freezing lake. She was ready to shatter the Law Enforcement array by brute force if necessary to save him.

But just as her foot left the boulder, the dying spark within the array violently flared.

It didn't just recover; it spiked with an unnatural, terrifying intensity that had absolutely nothing to do with Dou Qi. It was a dense, heavy pulse of raw, awakened energy that pushed back against the suffocating pressure of the trench.

Zhan Yue froze mid-step, her eyes widening in profound shock.

She carefully extended her perception again. The erratic heartbeat had steadied. The life force was no longer fading; it was fiercely, stubbornly alive, radiating a strange, heavy tranquility that she had never felt before.

'He survived...' Zhan Yue realized, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. She slowly lowered her foot, allowing the silver Dou Qi to dissipate back into her meridians. 'He didn't just survive. He changed.'

Knowing he was safe and that he had managed to retreat back to his cell, she resumed her silent vigil on the boulder, waiting for the final days of the sentence to tick away.

Time flowed relentlessly, and finally, the sixtieth day arrived.

The morning sun cast a warm, golden hue over the tranquil forest surrounding the lake. Zhan Yue was no longer alone on the shoreline.

Four powerful auras descended from the sky, landing softly on the grass.

Deputy Headmaster Hu Gan led the group, his hands clasped behind his back, his expression a mixture of deep curiosity and subtle anxiety. Beside him stood an elderly man dressed in the pristine white robes of the Healing Pavilion, carrying a large, wooden medical chest. Trailing slightly behind them was an older man wearing the distinctive, embroidered robes of the Alchemist Department, smelling faintly of medicinal herbs. Elder Long have also accompanied.

"Head Zhan," Hu Gan greeted smoothly, nodding to the silver-robed woman. "Is the boy still breathing?"

"He is alive, Deputy Headmaster," Zhan Yue confirmed, her tone formal but carrying a hint of lingering tension. "Though his vitals fluctuated wildly a few days ago, they have remained stable since."

"A miracle in itself," the Healing Elder muttered, stroking his white beard. "To survive sixty days in that Yin-heavy, freezing environment without Dou Qi to protect the internal organs... his physical constitution must be monstrous."

"We will see shortly," Hu Gan said, turning toward the lake. "Commander Wu should be arriving any moment to unlock the array."

As if on cue, the space near the edge of the forest distorted slightly. Commander Wu stepped out of the shadows, his expression as rigid and unreadable as carved stone. He had officially completed his one-month suspension and closed-door cultivation, returning exactly on time to conclude the sentence he had issued.

Wu offered brief, stiff bows to the assembled elders and the Deputy Headmaster.

"Commander," Hu Gan acknowledged mildly. "Open the gates. Let us retrieve our student."

Wu nodded. He walked to the very edge of the black water, raising his hands. He channeled his dense, dark-blue Dou Qi, forming a series of complex, glowing hand seals. The ambient worldly energy around the lake hummed violently.

With a heavy, grinding sound that seemed to echo from the depths of the earth, the surface of the lake parted.

A massive, translucent dome of Dou Qi formed, pushing the freezing water aside, creating a dry, descending pathway that led directly down into the pitch-black abyss of the Riverlands.

The group did not hesitate. They enveloped themselves in protective layers of Dou Qi and followed Commander Wu down the subterranean slope, descending rapidly into the dark, damp caverns.

As they navigated the twisting, moss-covered tunnels, the ambient temperature plummeted. The air was thick with the smell of stagnant water and the faint, metallic tang of blood. The Healing Elder and the Alchemist exchanged worried glances, tightening their auras against the biting chill.

Finally, they reached the deepest sector—the isolated cavern that housed Yoriichi's cell.

The massive iron gate was heavily rusted, partially submerged in the dark, swirling water that had flooded the cavern floor.

Wu stepped forward, placing his palm against the locking mechanism. A pulse of Dou Qi shattered the internal arrays, and the heavy iron bars creaked open slowly.

The group stepped into the cell.

Even for the seasoned Dou Huangs and the Deputy Headmaster, the sight before them was shocking.

The cavern was mostly flooded. Suspended high above the waterline, wedged violently between the horizontal crossbars near the ceiling, was Yoriichi.

He looked absolutely terrible.

His dark robes were shredded into mere rags, hanging loosely from his frame. The dense, sculpted musculature he had possessed two months ago was completely gone, replaced by an emaciated, hollowed-out physique. His skin was deathly pale, marred by dozens of deep, jagged cuts, bruises, and patches of severe frostbite.

Using their spiritual senses, the elders immediately scanned his internal state.

"Oh my..." the Healing Elder gasped, rushing forward into the ankle-deep water. "He has at least three fractured ribs. His left arm is dislocated. His internal organs are severely malnourished and hovering on the edge of failure due to prolonged thermal shock."

Despite his horrifying physical state, he was still alive. His chest rose and fell in an impossibly slow, rhythmic cycle—a desperate, biological anchor holding onto life.
