Chapter 230 - Depths of the Fall

The restarting of the daemonic manufactorums of Chaos upon Neo‑vellum marked the definitive end of minor skirmishes on Vigilus. The war had once more broken its bounds, escalating into a catastrophic grand theater of conflict.

As the subterranean, secretive gathering nodes of the Genestealer Cults were systematically replaced by the unending, dissonant chattering of the Skaven, the Imperial defenders discovered, to their profound shock, that while one bitter rival had been excised, a far more terrifying enemy had risen to take its place.

"My Lord, we have suffered a complete vox-collapse with the Twin Chasms. According to the final telepathic bursts received, they have been overrun by rat-fiends."

"My Lord, the Piston's Hollow has ruptured. Subterranean auspex scans detect vermin forces numbering in the tens of millions. The Cadian 556th Infantry and 723rd Armoured Regiments have mobilized to form a blocking line. They swear by the Emperor's Light to hold until death for the glory of the Imperium!"

Within Saint's Haven, the capital of Vigilus and the absolute nerve center of Marneus Calgar's command, the air hung heavy with the scent of sterile unguents and incense. Though Calgar had been brutally run through by the daemonic blade of Abaddon the Despoiler, the Emperor had watched over his servant; he had survived the horrific trauma, but now lay confined once more to an intensive apothecarion suite. It was here that the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines was forced to listen to his officers deliver an unrelenting succession of nightmarish tactical assessments.

"Enough..." Calgar's weathered face was a mask of stubborn, deep-seated agony. He struggled to heave his scarred frame from the operational rejuve-cradle, but was immediately pressed back by the attending Apothecaries.

"My Lord, by all dictates of logic and medicine, your wounds must be allowed to knit before you take the field."

"No," Calgar growled, shaking his head. "This tide is different. The filth of Chaos and these craven, long-furred vermin have formed a true, unholy convergence. It is as though whatever dark powers govern them have grown weary of this stalemate."

Calgar's formidable, strategically honed mind processed thousands of disparate data-feeds with absolute precision. At his low command, a hovering chorus of servo-skulls and lexmechanics updated a massive, hololithic strategic map projecting above the chamber floor.

Across this tactical display, sectors previously unmapped, or thought to be occupied by the disparate enclaves of Genestealer Cults and minor Chaos covens, were now being violently consumed by the spreading crimson stains of the Skaven offensive.

The planetary Chief Librarians had already psychically foreseen the catastrophic return of Haarken Worldclaimer, the Herald of the Apocalypse, and the sky-darkening host of his black-winged raptor cults. The entirety of Vigilus, and by extension the indispensable Nachmund Gauntlet itself, was on the precipice of being engulfed by an absolute and final darkness.

Calgar refused to accept such a fate. He would not allow Vigilus and Sangua Terra to fall simultaneously under his watch. To lose these worlds was to sever the Imperium's final psychic and physical lifeline to the northern half of the galaxy, the desolate, forsaken territories of the Imperium Nihilus.

If the Imperium of Man was a domain of a million worlds, then at least hundreds of thousands lay stranded within the darkness of the northern sector, entirely detached from the light of the Astronomican. This did not even account for the countless Imperial Crusade fleets that had pushed deep into the dark frontier via the critical corridor of the Nachmund Gauntlet.

"Attend me! Bring forth my armor!"

Yielding to the absolute authority of the Lord Collector's command, the Ultramarines could only signal the tech-servitors to begin the solemn, mechanical ritual of encasing Calgar within his specialized power armor. Though the invasive scars of his recent surgeries were raw and the tissue punctured by the Despoiler's black sword remained unhealed, this was a warrior long accustomed to governing through excruciating physical trauma.

If it meant he would return to the threshold of death once more, so be it.

"We must ascertain the enemy's primary vector of assault," Calgar commanded, his booming voice echoing as he strode rapidly toward the central war room. "If they possess the sheer folly to hurl themselves directly against these bastions, it will be their undoing."

As the Chapter Master reached the heavy blast doors, a Kasrkin officer, his uniform scorched and defaced by war, came sprinting through the corridor in a state of visible panic.

"Halt. State your business, soldier. What cause justifies this loss of discipline?"

Two towering Astartes of the Honour Guard instantly stepped forward, lowering their guardian blades to block the mortal officer, their voices dropping to a chilling, demanding baritone.

"Oh, my Lords! My Lord Chapter Master!" The Kasrkin officer reeked of chemical smoke, cordite, and promethium ash. He raised his terror-stricken eyes, finding solace only when he looked upon the rock-shattered visage of the Ultramarines legend. "Terrible news from the northern theater!"

"Speak clearly and without hesitation," Calgar directed, his gaze unmoving.

"I bear a catastrophic report from our allies on the continent of Megaborealis. The Skitarii legions of the Adeptus Mechanicus have been utterly broken. Their vanguard defenses are annihilated. The Archmagos is currently retreating toward our lines with a shattered remnant of fewer than three hundred thousand surviving troops."

Calgar felt a sudden, sharp pang in his chest, as if his primary heart had suffered a physical blow. Those insufferable, tech-dogmatic masters of the red robes. They had fallen? And they had allowed the entire continent of Megaborealis to be wrested from their control without so much as a single planetary distress transmission?

"How did this happen? Report!" Calgar bellowed, a low roar of righteous fury vibrating through his throat. The Kasrkin officer hastily held aloft a copper-plated cogitator servo-skull, its ocular lenses whirring into life.

"This is the internal pict-log extracted from the Mechanicus data-conduits, my Lord..."

Calgar activated the playback. Through the flickering, sensory-filtered perspective of the cogitator's late master, a Tech-Priest of the local forge-conclave, the horrific unravelling of Megaborealis was laid bare.

Because the Adeptus Mechanicus had spent millennia systematically strip-mining Megaborealis for its precious deposits of blackstone, the entire landmass was left structurally hollowed, riddled with miles of deep-bore shafts and plagued by constant seismic instability.

Ever since Abaddon's initial retreat, the tech-enclaves had been severely menaced by subterranean vermin activity. Yet, out of a misplaced sense of technological pride and a desperate desire to safeguard their sovereign blackstone quarries, the Magi had steadfastly refused to disclose the severity of the subterranean threat to the broader Imperial command.

Initially, when Clan Rictus held sway over the deeper networks, they had preferred to remain cloaked in darkness, utilizing the vast geological fissures as a clandestine transit system while levying tolls on lesser clans; only minor, splintered warbands would occasionally break through to scavenge Imperial tech or commit minor acts of sabotage.

However, the moment the disparate Skaven clans formed a unified coalition under their warlords, Megaborealis was instantly inundated by an overwhelming, apocalyptic vermin tide.

To the misfortune of the Tech-Priests, every single square mile of the excavation networks provided the perfect staging ground for the Skaven to strike. The Adeptus Mechanicus armories were targeted by coordinated inside-sabotage, suffering catastrophic detonations and systemic supply thefts.

Massive, foul-fleshed rat-beasts, their bodies bloated with oozing pestilential pustules, scurried through the lower mechanisms, carrying a horrific, highly virulent bio-phage that explicitly targeted and rotted machine-spirits and sacred metallurgy alike.

Following this technological paralysis, every single structural fault-line, forgotten elevator shaft, and deep-well bore within the blackstone mines erupted with the skittering, chattering vanguard of the Skaven grand armies.

The Skitarii cohorts fought with the cold, unyielding, and mathematically precise logic inherent to their cybernetic programming, but their numbers were a mere drop within the ocean of the vermin horde. In under a standard month, the Adeptus Mechanicus was forced into a humiliating, disorganized abandonment of their sovereign holdings.

Deep within the bore-hive of Scelerus, amidst the towering, majestic architecture of the Omnissiah's faithful, a group of figures watched the structural collapse with profound, mocking amusement. These were the dark tech-priests of the Dark Mechanicum, or as they were now codified within the shifting hierarchies of the Skaven alliance, the Dark Tech-Priests of Clan Resilience, high ministers of the City of Blight. They watched the grand cathedrals of their former, corpse-worshipping brethren crumble into ash with sickening, electronic screeches of delight.

"This is the substance they chose to hoard? How utterly primitive. How remarkably blind. These relics of the Necrontyr are completely useless to the true evolution of the machine," muttered a senior Dark Mechanicum Magos, turning a raw shard of noctilith, blackstone, within his multi-jointed mechadendrites. This substance held the unique, warp-smothering resonance capable of stabilizing the fragile corridor of the Nachmund Gauntlet between Vigilus and Sangua Terra.

"The true directive of the Omnissiah demands that the eternal, mutagenic energies of the Machine God saturate this entire world. We shall tear away the northern realm from the false Imperium forever!"

With a contemptuous flick of his iron-shod claw, the heretek cast the priceless blackstone into the debris. In its place, he withdrew a jagged, glowing shard of raw warpstone. As his hydraulic pincers crushed the unholy mineral, a violent discharge of viridian warp-lightning arced across his chassis.

In an instant, the standard prometheum and plasma cells driving his cybernetic frame were flooded with a near-infinite, volatile power. There was no longer any doubt within his corrupted logic circuits: warpstone was the ultimate, unadulterated gift of the true Machine God. No material within the mortal universe could equal its limitless potential; it was a cosmic catalyst capable of forging empires or reducing entire sectors to cosmic dust.

Yet, despite the catastrophic fall of Megaborealis to the Skaven host, the expected secondary wave of the Skaven offensive against the core Hive complexes of Vigilus ground to an unexpected halt.

The vast territory and riches had been secured by an uneasy coalition of countless rival clans. True to the inescapable nature of their species, the moment the grand conquest was achieved, the Skaven immediately devolved into a vicious, internal war of political maneuvering and backstabbing over the division of the spoils.

The minor, vassal clans clamored frantically for weapons and scraps of discarded Imperial technology, while the dominant warlord clans demanded access to the captured forge-networks. Meanwhile, the chief orchestrators of the Vigilus campaign, Clans Skryre, Moulder, and Pestilens, began to draw daggers against one another, each desperate to claim absolute administrative hegemony over the broken continent.

For they all knew that when the Great Horned Rat ultimately looked down to distribute his unholy favor upon his chosen, the one who held the largest territory and offered the greatest mountain of sacrifices would be granted the ultimate reward: ascension into the immortal, ruinous form of a Verminlord.
