Chapter 108 - Chapter 108: The Real Dojo Trial

The cool afternoon air of Veilstone City felt refreshing against Julian's skin as he stepped away from the Dojo. He looked down at the Cobble Badge in his hand, its earthy, rectangular design catching the light. He felt a strange sense of relief, but before he could even take ten steps toward the Pokémon Center, a heavy hand landed on his shoulder.

"Oh, right! Get some good rest today, and come back to the Gym tomorrow morning!"

Julian turned to see Grandpa Aaron standing there, his bare chest still slightly damp from the match, with Lucario right behind him. The jackal-like Pokémon was staring at Julian with a gaze that felt like it was scanning his very soul.

"My Lucario sensed it earlier," Aaron said, his voice dropping to a more conspiratorial tone. "Julian, young man... you possess the gift of Aura, don't you? And not just a trace—you must be starting to control it by now."

Julian blinked, then gave a slow, honest nod. It wasn't exactly a secret he was trying to keep, but it wasn't something he broadcasted either. "I... accidentally awakened it a few weeks ago during a hike in the mountains. I've been trying to practice, but honestly, I feel like I'm just stumbling around in the dark. I can barely sense the movement of a Pidgey nearby without getting a headache."

"Hahaha! Just as I thought!" Aaron slapped his thigh, his laughter booming across the street. "Listen, I don't use Aura myself—I'm just a guy who likes to hit things and train hard—and the way humans and Pokémon use it is a bit different. But my Lucario? He's a master. He's been breathing Aura for forty years."

The Gym Leader leaned in. "He's quite taken with you. He said he's willing to give you some guidance tomorrow. It'll be a hell of a lot better than whatever 'fumbling' you've been doing on your own."

"Wait, really?" Julian's eyes widened. "Lucario is willing to teach me?"

"Lucario!" The jackal nodded firmly, a small, approving smirk playing on its muzzle.

"He says you earned his respect in that last round," Aaron translated. "And it's rare for him to find a human with the 'potential' who isn't already part of some ancient order. So, what do you say?"

Julian didn't even need to think. He had a mysterious egg in his bag that would take another ten days to hatch, and he was in no rush to leave Veilstone just yet. The chance to learn from a literal legend was worth its weight in Gold Bottle Caps.

"I'd be honored," Julian said with a deep bow. "I'll get my team patched up at the Center and see you first thing in the morning."

That night, while the rest of the city was beginning to settle into a quiet hum of neon lights and evening diners, the lights in the back office of the Veilstone Gym were still burning bright.

Grandpa Aaron sat in a high-backed chair, the blue light of a computer monitor reflecting off his weathered face. He wasn't looking at training schedules or supply orders. He was looking at a restricted database—the Internal League Registry.

On the screen, a profile was open:

Name: Julian

Hometown: Sandgem Town, Sinnoh

Pokédex Issuer: Professor Rowan

Registration Date: April 8th, Year 243

Trainer Class: Rookie (Official Status)

Badges Obtained: 5

Ribbons Obtained: 3 (Jubilife, Floaroma, Hearthome)

Notable Achievements: Discoverer of contemporary Fairy-type variations; Assisted in the Mt. Coronet Geodude containment operation.

Aaron scrolled down. To the average person, this looked like a standard resume. But Aaron, as a high-ranking Gym Leader, had access to the "Hidden Commentary"—the notes left by other Leaders after a match. He clicked the three dots next to each badge entry.

First Badge: Coal Badge (Oreburgh Gym) Commentary (Roark): "First-ever match, yet displayed tactical maturity far exceeding his peers. Perfectly passed the 'Unpredictable Terrain' trial on his first attempt. Remarkable adaptability."

Second Badge: Mine Badge (Canalave Gym) Commentary (Byron): "Adept at rule utilization. Didn't just bash against my Steel-types; he dismantled them. Passed the 'Wall-Breaker' trial on the first try. The boy has a sharp mind for structural weaknesses."

Third Badge: Forest Badge (Eterna Gym) Commentary (Gardenia): "He knows too much! Used obscure move synergies I haven't seen in years. My first two partners didn't stand a chance. Perfectly passed the 'Status & Synergy' trial. One shot, one kill. Scarily efficient."

Fourth Badge: Relic Badge (Hearthome Gym) Commentary (Melissa): "Magnificent! A true performer and a brilliant tactician. I pushed him with 'Excessive Force' (Gym Leader Level), and he didn't blink. Passed the 'Ghost-Psychic Nullification' trial in one go. He's ready for the big leagues."

The Wall of the Fifth

Aaron leaned back, a low whistle escaping his lips. "What a terrifying young man. If this keeps up, the Champion's seat might actually get a new occupant this year. What do you think, Lucario?"

Lucario, who was meditating in the corner of the office, opened one eye. It looked at the glowing screen, then back at its master. It knew exactly how rare it was for a Trainer to "perfectly" pass those hidden trials on a first attempt.

In the Sinnoh League, the Gyms aren't just there to hand out badges. They are designed as a filtering system. The first four Gyms test basic competency: type matchups, terrain, defense, and status conditions. Most decent Trainers pass these eventually.

But the Fifth Badge is where the "Great Filter" begins. This is where Gym Leaders are instructed to stop being "teachers" and start being "walls."

Julian didn't know it, but his match today was a specialized assessment. When Aaron saw Julian's record, he knew a standard Gym-level match wouldn't be enough to test him. That was why he brought out his Elite Four Level Lucario.

Julian had guessed that Lucario was "Gym Leader Level." He was wrong. Lucario was two tiers higher. That was why, no matter how clever Julian's "Petal-Psychic" combo was, Lucario had barely felt the sting. The damage had been negligible.

The real trial of the Veilstone Gym wasn't about winning—it was about Fighting Will.

The League knows that most Trainers lose their nerve when they face an opponent they physically cannot beat. Many collapse under the pressure, or surrender when they realize their best attacks are doing nothing. For a Trainer to reach the Pokémon League, they must be able to face a "God" and still swing their fist.

Aaron smiled, remembering the look in Julian's eyes when he told Floette to keep going.

"He didn't break," Aaron whispered, typing his own evaluation into the system.

Fifth Badge: Cobble Badge (Veilstone Gym) > Commentary (Aaron): "Passed the 'True Grit' trial on the first attempt. Faced an Elite Four-tier opponent with nothing but a Floette and a dream, and he didn't flinch. His Aura resonance is awakening. I had Lucario 'concede' the match because the boy proved his spirit is already at the Master level. Keep a close watch on this one."

Lucario stood up and walked over to the window, looking out over the city toward the Pokémon Center. It felt Julian's presence—a small, bright flame of Aura that was untrained but incredibly pure.

It was rare to find a human who could bridge the gap between "Trainer" and "Guardian." Tomorrow's training wasn't just a favor; it was an investment in the future of the region.
