Chapter 47 - Warmth Vs Cold

Arena 3 – Quarter-Final Match

The temperature plummeted so fast that the very air shattered.

It started at the soles of Morana's boots. A wave of blinding white frost exploded outward, crawling across the rust-colored sand like a swarm of ravenous crystal locusts. The protective barrier dome above them groaned, condensation freezing against the magical shield in thick, jagged fractals.

[ Enemy Domain Activating: Frozen Domain ]

[ Environmental Shift: Extreme Cold. Ambient Mana Drain increased by 300% ]

Up in the Observation Deck, Mist leaned forward, his knuckles white against the railing.

"Damn it," Mist cursed softly. "It's not just an area-of-effect spell. It's a localized reality warp. She's stripping the fire-aligned mana from the air itself."

Krad shivered, pulling his Crimson Blade jacket tighter. Even fifty feet up and behind a protective barrier, he could see his own breath misting in the air. "What does that mean for Aze?"

"It means his three-minute time limit just got cut to ninety seconds," Mist said grimly. "If he doesn't end this immediately, the cold will snuff out his mana core."

Down in the arena, Aze Crimsonwind didn't look like a boy with only ninety seconds to live. He looked like a meteor.

"You think a little snow is gonna stop me?!" Aze roared.

He didn't retreat from the advancing frost, he dove directly into it. Aze slammed his twin short swords together, the friction sparking a brilliant flash of red light. He threw his left arm forward in a wide arc.

"Crimson Scatter!"

Dozens of fiery projectiles, shurikens made of pure, compressed heat erupted from his blade, curving through the freezing air like homing missiles.

Morana didn't flinch. Her platinum blonde hair whipped around her face as she simply raised a single, pale finger.

Pillars of absolute ice tore upward from the frozen arena floor, intercepting the fiery projectiles. Hiss! Crack! Thick clouds of superheated steam exploded across the battlefield as fire met ice, instantly reducing visibility to zero.

"He's using the steam for cover," Hania noted, her elven eyes tracking the subtle shifts in the dense white fog. "A tactical smokescreen. Clever."

Inside the blinding mist, the sound of combat was terrifying. The sharp clash of steel against hardened ice echoed endlessly. Aze was a blur of crimson light, utilizing high-speed footwork to bounce off Morana's own ice pillars, turning her domain into his personal springboard. He struck from the left, the right, above a relentless flurry of dual-blade slashes, each one leaving a searing trail of fire.

But Morana's defense was algorithmic in its perfection.

She didn't run. She barely even moved her feet. She manifested gauntlets of black ice over her hands, parrying Aze's superheated blades with millimeter precision.

Clang! Hiss!

"You're fast, Crimsonwind," Morana's voice echoed from all directions, cold and detached. "But your anger makes your footwork heavy."

"Shut up!" Aze yelled. He feinted a high strike, dropping into a slide across the slick ice, and thrust his right sword directly at her knee, the exact spot she had frozen a year ago.

Morana manifested a shield of ice to block it, but Aze grinned. Gotcha.

He released the right sword entirely, letting it embed into the ice shield, and used his empty hand to grab Morana's wrist. His skin was burning with the Heat-Infusion technique. The moment he touched her pale skin, the intense heat sizzled against her frost armor.

With his remaining sword, Aze spun his body weight and slashed upward.

Morana twisted violently to evade, but she was a fraction of a second too late. The searing tip of Aze's blade grazed her cheek.

A lock of platinum hair fluttered to the ground, its ends singed black. A thin line of blood appeared on Morana's cheek, instantly vaporizing against the extreme heat radiating from Aze's blade.

The crowd gasped. He hit her.

But Morana didn't counterattack. She simply froze. Her pale blue eyes widened, staring at the burning red aura cloaking the boy in front of her. The stinging heat radiating against her cheek bypassed her armor. It bypassed her Frozen Domain.

"It felt... warm."

And in that split second, the roar of the crowd faded away. The arena vanished.

Ten Years Ago – The Northern Wastes

"Monster! Get away from us!"

A rock struck the side of seven-year-old Morana's head. She fell into the snow, curling into a tight ball, sobbing. Everywhere her tears fell, the ground froze solid, expanding in jagged, dangerous spikes.

She couldn't stop it. The magic inside her was a curse, an uncontrollable blizzard that froze the family's crops, killed the village livestock, and gave frostbite to anyone who tried to hold her. She was a weapon that hadn't learned how to sheathe itself.

The village boys raised more rocks, their faces twisted in fear and hatred.

Suddenly, a wall of gentle, crackling orange flame erupted between Morana and the bullies. The snow instantly melted into warm, comforting puddles.

"You throw one more rock at my sister," a voice warned, calm but carrying the quiet threat of a wildfire, "and I'll show you what a real monster looks like."

The boys scrambled away in terror.

Heavy boots crunched in the snow. A hand reached down toward Morana. She flinched away, screaming, "No! Don't touch me! I'll hurt you!"

But the hand didn't pull back. It clamped gently over her small, freezing shoulder. The intense cold of her body tried to lash out, to freeze the intruder, but it met a steady, unyielding warmth.

Morana looked up. Her older brother, Morgan, was smiling down at her. His skin was glowing with the soft embers of high-tier Fire magic. He was the only person in the world who could touch her without getting hurt. The only one whose warmth could match her absolute zero.

"It's okay," Morgan whispered, pulling her into a tight hug. The freezing spikes around her melted away in his embrace. "My fire is strong enough to hold your cold. I've got you."

Arena Floor – Present

Morana blinked, the roar of the Rage Tournament rushing back into her ears.

Aze was mid-air, bringing his sword down for a devastating overhead strike.

The heat radiating from Aze was so similar to Morgan's. Reckless bright warm.

No, Morana thought, her pale eyes narrowing as the memory curdled into the nightmare of what came after. Warmth is a weakness. Warmth gets you killed.

[ System Notification: Morana Blackthorn Mana Output Surging ]

"Glacial Repulsion!"

A shockwave of absolute zero exploded from Morana's core.

Aze was blasted backward out of the air, his Heat-Infusion aura sputtering violently. He crashed into an ice pillar, coughing up a mouthful of blood.

[ Aze Health: 420/1200 ]

[ Warning: Core Temperature Dropping ]

"You think you understand fire, little boy?" Morana's voice was no longer detached. It trembled with a sudden, vicious rage that made the temperature drop another ten degrees. "You think passion and heat are enough to win a battle?"

She raised both hands. The Frozen Domain responded to her fury. The ice mirrors surrounding the arena detached from the floor, hovering in the air like dozens of floating guillotines.

"Passion burns out!" Morana shouted, slashing her hands downward.

The ice mirrors launched at Aze like a barrage of massive shurikens. Aze scrambled to his feet, deflecting one, ducking under another, but there were too many. One clipped his shoulder, tearing through his armor. Another grazed his thigh.

Every time the ice touched him, the extreme cold leached away a fraction of his mana.

[ Aze Mana: 18% Remaining ]

"You don't understand anything!" Morana advanced, walking slowly across the ice. With every step, a massive spike of ice erupted from the ground, chasing Aze, forcing him to dodge frantically. "You throw yourself at the enemy hoping your willpower will save you! It's pathetic! It's naive!"

Observation Deck

"She's completely changed her fighting style," Titan Forgeborn rumbled, leaning over the rail. "She was fighting methodically. Now, she's fighting emotionally. She's trying to punish him."

"Why?" Krad asked, his eyes tracking Aze's desperate evasions. "Aze is just fighting hard. Why is she taking it so personally?"

Mist's eyes narrowed. "Because whatever Aze represents to her... she hates it."

Arena Floor

Aze was backed into a corner of the barrier dome. His breathing was ragged. Frost was beginning to form on his eyelashes. His red hair was plastered to his forehead with freezing sweat.

He looked up at Morana, who stood thirty feet away, raising a massive spear of ice above her head, preparing to impale him.

"You're right," Aze rasped, gripping his remaining sword with both hands. "I am naive. I'm reckless. I'm a Level 358 idiot fighting a Level 445 monster."

He planted his feet. The dying embers of his

Heat-Infusion began to pull inward, condensing into his blade instead of his body.

"But I watched a kid lower level than me beat someone who could crush mountains today," Aze grinned, spitting blood onto the ice. "He taught me that you don't need a perfect plan. You just need to refuse to stay down!"

[ Aze Crimsonwind Initiating Ultimate Technique ]

[ Warning: Total Mana Expenditure Detected ]

The flames surrounding Aze didn't just flare, they turned blue. The sheer intensity of the compressed heat began to melt the ice beneath his feet, turning the corner of the arena into a boiling geyser.

"I'm not the same kid you humiliated last year!" Aze roared, his blue-flame sword illuminating the arena. "Meteor Strike!"

Aze launched himself off the back wall. He didn't run, he flew. He was a literal human missile of blue fire, tearing through the Frozen Domain, aiming directly for Morana's chest. The heat was so intense the air itself warped and screamed.

Morana stared at the incoming blue flame. He's putting his entire life force into this one strike. He's going to burn himself out just to try and reach me.
