The desert wind blew with scorching force along the massive perimeter wall surrounding the northern sector of Sunagakure. Despite it being the early hours of the morning, the sun's heat fell upon the sand with a suffocating weight, promising a relentless day for those unaccustomed to the desert's unforgiving climate.
In front of the imposing North Gate, a giant stone door, the teams that had managed to overcome the tough psychological evaluation of the first stage were assembled.
On an elevated platform above the entrance, a female figure stood watching the crowd of genin with a cold, distant, and calculating gaze.
It was Malenia Chinoike. She wore the official combat uniform of Suna's 7 Swords, with her clan's distinctive crest visible on the fabric of her headscarf.
Beside her, several Anbu officers wearing desert ape and bird masks stood guard at heavy wooden tables loaded with registration scrolls.
"Attention, everyone," Malenia's voice was not particularly loud, but thanks to subtle chakra channeling, it echoed with absolute clarity over the whistling wind.
The murmuring of the young shinobi ceased immediately. Everyone looked up at the platform, feeling the natural authority radiating from the Suna kunoichi.
"Congratulations on demonstrating that you possess the mental maturity not to freeze in panic during the first phase," Malenia began, crossing her arms over her chest.
"However, what you will face from this moment on is not a sensory illusion or a test of temperament in a closed room. This is the Second Phase of the Chunin Exams: the Devil's Desert."
A chill ran down the spines of several competitors. Malenia paused briefly to point toward the immense horizon of dunes, stone canyons, and buried ruins extending beyond the walls.
"This exam will last a total of five full days, that is, one hundred and twenty continuous hours," Malenia continued.
"During this time, Sunagakure will only provide you with water. If you want food or shelter, you will have to handle that yourselves in the desert. The desert itself will be your primary enemy. During the day, temperatures will exceed forty-five degrees, which will drain your bodies and water reserves twice as fast if you do not know how to regulate your energy. During the night, the temperature will drop below zero, bringing mobile sandstorms and the territorial beasts that inhabit the desert."
Sakura Haruno swallowed hard in silence, adjusting her tactical supply backpack. Beside her, Sasuke Uchiha stood firm with his arms crossed, analyzing the outline of the map barely visible in the distance. Naruto Uzumaki, on the other hand, stared at the door with clenched fists and a smile full of determination.
"But survival is not the only objective," Malenia added in a stern tone.
"To qualify for the Third Phase, each team must reach these very doors before the one hundred and twenty hours expire. And to open this door right here, you will need a specific pair of items: a Golden Key and a Silver Key."
A murmur of uncertainty began to spread through the ranks of the applicants.
"Locked chests are hidden all across the Devil's Desert," the kunoichi explained.
"These chests are buried in the sand, hidden at the tops of canyons, or guarded in the nests of wild fauna. Inside each chest, you will find only one key—either Golden or Silver. No chest contains both. This means you will need to find two different chests or take them from another team."
Malenia paused intentionally, allowing the gravity of her words to settle in the young ninjas' minds.
"Let me be clear from this moment on: the total number of chests is less than the number of participating teams," Malenia declared coldly.
"It is impossible for everyone here to pass the test. Therefore, there are no allies inside this exam. Everyone around you is a mortal enemy. In the desert, there are no combat rules, no referees to stop a fatal blow, and no emergency medical assistance. Whoever falls in the sand stays there."
A deathly silence fell over the North Gate plaza. Several genin began breaking into a cold sweat, feeling the overwhelming reality of the situation.
"For that very reason," Malenia concluded, gesturing to the Anbu to step forward with the tables of scrolls, "before crossing this door, each of you must sign this liability waiver scroll. With your signature, you accept that Sunagakure and the participating villages are completely free of any blame should you suffer mutilation, severe injury, or death over the next five days. Whoever does not wish to sign may forfeit right now along with their entire team."
No one stepped back, though the tension in the air was so thick it could be cut with a kunai.
"Good. If you have any questions before we proceed to signing and access distribution, ask them now," Malenia said.
Omoi, the ninja from Kumogakure, raised his hand almost immediately with an expression of intense anxiety while adjusting the lollipop in his mouth.
"I... I have an important question," Omoi said, talking rapidly.
"What if we find a chest, but it turns out to have a self-destruction mechanism filled with giant scorpion venom? Or what if the chests are buried thirty meters beneath quicksand, and while we're trying to dig them out, we get heatstroke, become dehydrated, start hallucinating, and end up eating sand thinking it's food until our stomachs get clogged up and we die in the middle of nowhere?"
"Shut your mouth already, Omoi," Karui hissed beside him, landing a direct elbow into his ribs that made him choke back a groan. "You're embarrassing us in front of everyone!"
Samui, keeping her composure, looked at Malenia and asked professionally, "Are there any restrictions regarding the methods used to take keys from other teams once we are out of wall range?"
"None," Malenia replied without hesitation. "Tracking, ambushes, direct combat, or execution. Any method is valid as long as you reach this gate with the required key combination."
Deidara stepped forward with a mocking, confident smirk, adjusting the tactical clay pouches around his waist.
"Hey, Sand woman, hm," Deidara called out. "Any objections if I use my large-scale explosions to pulverize anyone trying to hide underground? I wouldn't want anyone saying later that I ruined your precious artistic terrain, hm."
Kurotsuchi delivered a light smack to the back of the blonde Rock ninja's head before he could keep talking.
"Ignore this idiot, it's obvious that's not what matters," Kurotsuchi chimed in firmly. "My only question is whether the location of the chests shifts due to the nighttime sandstorms."
"The chests are protected by anchoring fuinjutsu seals," Malenia clarified, ignoring Deidara's bravado. "They won't be moved by the wind, but the sand can cover them completely. If you want to find them, you will need tracking skills or the ability to read the terrain."
Naruto Uzumaki took a step to the front of his team, adjusting his Konohagakure headband with a defiant grin.
"Hey, I have a question!" Naruto shouted toward the platform. "Just to be clear! How many chests are there in total across the whole map?"
Malenia stared intently at the Fifth Hokage's son. She recognized Minato Namikaze's features in the young blonde boy.
"That information is classified, brat," Malenia answered with a slight smirk bordering on a smile. "But I will tell you this: there are only enough pairs of keys for one-third of the teams present here to open the gate. Whoever isn't fast or strong enough will be left out."
Sasuke Uchiha stepped beside Naruto, his eyes narrowed as he observed the teams from the other villages.
"That's enough information," Sasuke muttered. "It's not just about finding the chests first, but preventing trackers from following us while we look for them."
"That's right," Sakura agreed, quickly checking the bottle of food pills and bandages in her medical pouch. "We need to conserve water from the very first second. Sasuke, you and Naruto must avoid spending chakra unnecessarily on high-level techniques during the day."
"Got it, Sakura-chan!" Naruto replied, giving a thumbs-up. "My dad taught me how to manage chakra in hostile environments; I won't get tired that easily!"
"I doubt you'll get tired—you seem to have endless energy anyway," Sasuke said, a touch envious.
One by one, the teams moved toward the Anbu tables to put their signatures on the liability waiver scrolls. The atmosphere grew heavier as the sun climbed higher into the sky, intensifying the feeling of heat and suffocation.
Team 10 of Konoha finished signing. Shikamaru Nara signed the document with a long, deep sigh of resignation.
"What a drag of an exam," Shikamaru grumbled, hands in his pockets. "Five days in a giant oven looking for needles in a haystack... This is going to require an absurd amount of thinking and route planning just not to die in the first twenty-four hours."
"As long as we don't run out of rations before the third day, I'll be fine," Choji Akimichi said, carefully packing several bags of dehydrated food into his vest.
"Don't worry, Choji," Ino Yamanaka told him, adjusting her hair. "I'll use my sensory training to make sure we find a cave or shade before the sun hits its peak."
Nearby, Team Guy was completing their registration. Rock Lee signed with excessive passion, his pen nearly tearing through the scroll.
"This is the perfect opportunity to test our spirit of youth against the desert!" Lee exclaimed, his eyes burning with enthusiasm. "I will sprint across the dunes with all my might!"
"Don't you dare, Lee," Tenten scolded, adjusting her weapons scrolls on her back. "If you run like a lunatic under this sun, you'll dehydrate in two hours. Neji, what's the plan?"
Neji Hyūga signed the scroll with elegant, precise strokes before looking at his teammates.
"I will use the Byakugan only in brief intervals to scan for terrain elevation changes and locate the chest seals. We can't afford to strain our vision prematurely."
For their part, the four host teams from Sunagakure signed their documents with total calm. To them, the Devil's Desert was not uncharted territory; it was the cradle where they had been forged under the rigorous training of their parents and masters.
Karin adjusted her glasses after signing, looking out at the vast expanse of sand. Beside her, Sunae stretched her arms lazily, while Daiku kept a hand resting on the hilt of his katana.
"The north wind is bringing a mass of dry air," Karin noted in an analytical tone. "Visibility will drop by thirty percent in three hours. It's the perfect cover to advance toward the central canyon."
"Perfect," Sunae said with a confident smile. "Mom always said that when the Sand wind blows hard, true hunters don't need eyes to find their prey."
Daiku simply nodded, his expression serene and focused.
On the platform, Malenia watched as the last genin finished signing. She raised a hand, giving the official signal to the gate guards.
Heavy gear mechanisms began to echo inside the stone walls. The fuinjutsu seals on the massive door began to glow a light blue until the heavy stone structure started raising slowly, revealing the immensity of the Devil's Desert.
A gust of scorching, dust-laden air rushed into the departure area, making several ninjas cover their faces with their arms against the impact of the wind.
Malenia walked to the edge of the platform and drew a combat kunai, holding it high.
"Listen closely," Malenia announced in a firm voice. "As of this moment, the Second Phase of the Chunin Exams has officially begun. The gates will remain open for exactly ten minutes. Once that time passes, the walls will be completely sealed until the one hundred and twenty hours have passed—unless you get the keys and come back early."
The young shinobi's pulses skyrocketed.
"You have five days to survive, find the keys, and reach the gate!" Malenia shouted, bringing the kunai down sharply. "Go!"
"LET'S GO!" Naruto yelled without a second thought, shooting forward like lightning.
"Wait, Naruto, don't rush ahead of me!" Sasuke shouted at him, immediately activating the burst in his legs to keep pace while Sakura ran close on his left flank.
In a matter of seconds, the crowd of competitors broke apart in dozens of different directions. The sound of hurried footsteps echoed over the solid ground before being swallowed by the soft sand dunes.
The Kumogakure team, led by Samui, deployed in a tight triangular formation, pushing toward the rock formations to the west to seek shade before noon.
"Maintain a steady pace, but do not sprint!" Samui ordered as they moved at top speed. "Save your breath and don't talk unless absolutely necessary!"
"Understood!" Karui and Omoi replied in unison, focusing on the shifting ground beneath their feet.
Meanwhile, the Iwagakure team took a direct route north, where ancient stone ruins destroyed by past wars stood tall.
"Kurotsuchi, Sekka, we'll use my clay birds to travel by air and locate the chests faster," Deidara said, leaping nimbly from dune to dune. "If any team tries to follow us, I'll leave a little clay surprise in their path, hm."
"Just make sure you don't blow up the ruins if there's a chest inside, idiot," Kurotsuchi warned without slowing down.
The Konoha teams also split up according to their own strategies. Shikamaru led Team 10 toward a natural ravine in the ground to avoid the direct wind, while Team 8 advanced under the precise guidance of Hinata's Byakugan and the protection of Shino's insects.
Team Guy moved with flawless discipline, keeping Tenten in the center to conserve her physical endurance.
Meanwhile, Sunagakure's four teams dispersed into the sand like invisible shadows. They moved with terrifying ease, utilizing every fold of the dunes to melt away from the view of the foreign competitors.
High atop the village's central tower, Daigo monitored the squads' dispersal through a tactical chakra screen projecting the energy signatures moving through the Devil's Desert. Beside him, Rasa watched the horizon with his arms crossed.
"Everyone signed and entered without hesitation," Rasa commented. "Even the Leaf rookies show good resolve."
"Resolve is useful for the first twelve hours," Daigo replied in a calm yet deep voice, adjusting his Kazekage cloak. "But the desert is moved by no one's will. The desert destroys the ego and exposes the true nature of every ninja. Starting tonight, we will see who is truly capable of leading in war and who was merely an illusion."
"Indeed. I haven't forgotten how the desert works, Daigo."
Below, in the vast expanse of the Devil's Desert, the heavy stone doors of the North Gate slammed shut with a thundering thud that shook the earth, sealing the fate of every competitor inside the scorching hell of sand.
The hunt for survival and the keys had begun.
