Chapter 220: Living in Different Worlds

When appeals to righteousness failed, Tsunade decided to use hard data to shock the snake-cursed soldiers…

"Hey, sir, take a look at this." Tsunade handed a data sheet to a middle-aged snake-cursed man. "This kind of human experimentation is inhumane. Such a high death rate is practically murder!"

"…"

After a long silence, the middle-aged man scratched his head and grinned. "I can't read…"

Most of these snake-cursed soldiers had been fishermen or farmers before; very few of them were literate. Tsunade nearly choked on her own breath…

Grinding her teeth, she found a strong young snake-cursed man. "Do you know that in this experiment, only one out of five people survives?"

After saying this, Tsunade let out a long breath. Five people, only one survives—surely this guy would understand how serious it was!

However…

"What's that got to do with me?" The young man curled his lip in disdain. "Aren't I standing here just fine?"

"This…"

Tsunade suddenly froze. She realized that these snake-cursed soldiers didn't care at all how low the survival rate was—simply because they themselves had survived.

As the saying goes, disasters that don't happen to oneself are just topics of discussion. These snake-cursed soldiers might even secretly look down on the four unlucky ones who had died. They no longer considered themselves civilians; they called themselves new ninjas…

But aside from this, no matter what Tsunade did or said, these snake-cursed soldiers remained extremely respectful—almost completely obedient. It seemed that as long as Tsunade gave the order, they would even go so far as to kill themselves!

Yet no matter what, Tsunade couldn't bring herself to make them die. These snake-cursed soldiers were pitiable victims as well. Sighing, she shook her head and left. She couldn't change those who had already tasted the benefits, so she could only try the shrine—cutting off the source of this evil experiment…

Arriving in front of the shrine, the moment Tsunade appeared, the ordinary people waiting to receive the "divine blessing" all dropped to their knees with a thud.

Heads bowed in reverence, silent and eerie…

Tsunade was almost getting used to being knelt to. Taking a deep breath, she shouted, "Everyone, you may not know the truth behind this so-called divine power granted by the cult!"

The crowd didn't react at all, only kneeling respectfully…

Seeing this, Tsunade's heart sank. Gritting her teeth, she shouted, "There is no god here at all—this is nothing but evil human experimentation!"

Still, there was no movement…

"In this experiment, only one out of every five people survives!" Tsunade roared, eyes wide. "The other four all die and are thrown into the swamp!"

Even so, these civilians acted as if they hadn't heard anything, continuing to kneel with their heads lowered…

After a while, a leader finally stepped forward!

"I am the son of the Daimyo of the Land of Rain." The handsome young man's face was resolute. "Out of five people, only one is qualified to obtain divine power and survive—we all understand this clearly!"

"The Daimyo's son… if that's the case, then why?" Tsunade couldn't understand. These people knew they would die—so why were they still so fanatical?

"For mortals to attempt to obtain divine power, one out of five surviving—this is already a blessing from the gods." The Daimyo's son's eyes widened with excitement. "Aside from our Land of Rain, which other country's commoners have such an opportunity?"

"An opportunity…"

Tsunade was completely stunned. These people actually regarded such inhumane experiments as an opportunity?

It wasn't really Tsunade's fault.

From the very beginning, the two sides of this conversation had been living in entirely different worlds!
