Nina did not cry loud.
She cried the way people cry when they are trying to stay useful. Silent. Fast breaths. Wet cheeks she didn't wipe because her hands were busy shaking.
Theo sat on the edge of the workbench with his phone in both hands, staring at the new timer like it was a bomb.
24:00:00
It kept moving.
Jace stood by the garage door, listening to the street like it might start speaking. Lark stayed in the back corner, eyes wide, holding the foil pouch like it was the only thing keeping them from turning into a tracker again. Mara sat on the floor, her hoodie up, her phone glowing with the inside-layer console. Even when she looked up, it felt like part of her was somewhere else, walking in a hallway made of doors.
Nina's phone buzzed.
She flinched so hard her shoulders jumped.
She looked down and her face went pale.
Another calm message.
Another "helpful" offer.
Dependent bond: Eli P. — DUE SOONConfirm package to prevent degradation.
Two buttons.
CONFIRMNOT NOW
Nina stared at them like she wanted to break the screen with her teeth.
Mara typed a note on her phone and tilted it toward Nina.
DON'T TAP FAST.DON'T TAP SCARED.THAT'S HOW IT WINS.
Nina's lips trembled. She nodded once, but her eyes were wild.
Theo grabbed a marker and a cardboard piece and wrote big, then held it up for everyone.
WE NEED THE SOURCE FILE.NINA'S PARENTS SIGNED.THEY KNOW MORE THAN WE DO.
Nina swallowed hard. Her hands curled into fists.
She wrote back on paper so hard the pen left a dent.
I'M GOING HOME.
Jace's eyes snapped to her. He typed on his phone and shoved it toward her.
NO.IT'S A TRAP ZONE.
Nina wrote back, fast and shaky.
MY BROTHER IS DYING.IN A QUIET WAY.
Theo's face crumpled. He looked like he wanted to argue. He couldn't. Not when Eli's name sat on a line like a bill.
Lark wrote slowly, careful.
IF YOU GO,DON'T SAY THE TRUTH OUT LOUD.
Nina nodded. But the nod looked like it hurt.
Mara stood up, slow, like her body was heavy. She typed a new note and showed it to Nina.
WE GO TOGETHER.WE DON'T SPEAK.WE WATCH FOR BUTTONS.
They left the garage in a small group, moving like they were trying not to wake the city. Nina walked fast. Too fast. Like she thought speed could stop time.
On the way, Theo kept checking his phone, not tapping anything, just watching the timer eat his minutes. Jace kept his hand near his pocket like his phone could jump out and bite him. Lark stayed close to Mara, but not too close, like they were afraid the system would use distance as a rope.
Nina's house looked normal from the outside. Lights on. Curtains drawn. A small flower pot by the steps.
That normal look made Mara feel sick. Bad things loved normal places.
Nina opened the door with shaking hands.
Inside, her parents were in the living room. Her dad sat on the couch with his laptop open. Her mom stood near the kitchen counter, holding her phone like it was a hot pan.
They both looked tired in the way grown-ups look when they have been losing for a long time.
Nina stepped forward.
Her mouth opened.
Mara's hand shot out and gently touched Nina's sleeve—just a light warning. Nina closed her mouth again, breathing hard through her nose.
Nina pulled out her notebook and wrote, then held it up like a sign.
DID YOU SIGN A LEGACY PACKAGE?
Her mom blinked, confused. Then her mom's eyes filled with fear so fast it was like a curtain dropped.
Her mom picked up a pen and wrote on the back of a grocery receipt, hands shaking.
YES.WE DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS THIS.
Her dad wrote too, slower.
WE WERE TOLD IT WAS "SCHOLARSHIP HELP."WE WERE TOLD IT WAS SAFE.
Nina's whole body shook. She wrote again.
WHY WOULD YOU SIGN MY LIFE?
Her dad closed his eyes for a second like the words punched him. He wrote back, still slow.
WE WERE SCARED.WE WERE BROKE.WE THOUGHT IT WAS JUST TERMS.
Her mom wrote faster, desperate.
THEY SAID "OPT OUT" MEANT YOU WOULD LOSE EVERYTHING.THEY SAID YOU WOULD NEVER GET IN ANYWHERE.WE WERE TRYING TO SAVE YOU.
Mara felt a cold anger rise in her stomach.
Save you.
That's what the system always used. The word "save."
Nina's phone buzzed again, loud in the quiet room.
Her mom's phone buzzed too.
Then Nina heard it.
A small voice from the hallway.
"Mom?"
Eli stepped into the living room in pajamas, rubbing his eyes. He looked sleepy and soft and normal.
Nina's face broke.
She forgot the rules.
She said his name out loud.
"Eli—"
Her phone buzzed like a slap.
A banner flashed across Nina's lock screen.
VERBAL CONFIRMATION DETECTED.Timer adjustment applied.
Nina froze. Her mouth stayed open like she couldn't believe her own voice did that to her.
Her timer appeared for the first time in bright numbers she couldn't pretend were not real.
18:22:10 → 17:45:00
Nina's breath turned sharp. She covered her mouth with both hands, eyes wide with panic.
Eli blinked at her.
He looked at her face like he was trying to place it.
"Are you… Nina?" he asked, slow and unsure.
Nina made a small broken sound behind her hands. She shook her head fast like she could shake the question away.
Her mom rushed to Eli and crouched, forcing a smile that didn't fit her face anymore. Her mom wrote something on a note and showed Eli, trying to guide him without speaking.
Eli's eyes moved over the paper. He looked confused. His eyebrows pulled together.
Mara watched the moment with a sick feeling in her chest.
This was the bond degrading. Not all at once. Piece by piece. Like rot.
Nina's mom grabbed her phone and turned it around, showing Mara and Nina the screen.
A page labeled:
LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP PACKAGE — ACTIVE
Under it:
Dependent clause: sibling bondStatus: DUE SOONRecommendation: CONFIRM to prevent degradation
Mara saw the same buttons again.
CONFIRMNOT NOW
Nina's dad's laptop screen flickered. A new window opened by itself, like the house was part of the contract too.
FAMILY STABILITY OFFERRestore dependent recognition: 24 hoursPayment required: FUTURE PATH (major)
Nina stared at the words.
Future path.
That sounded like college. Like jobs. Like "your life." It sounded clean. It sounded like a big thing made into a simple button.
Theo held up his notebook, writing fast with shaking hands.
THIS IS THE TRADE.THEY WANT YOUR FUTURE.
Nina looked at Eli again.
Eli's eyes were wet now. Not because he understood. Because he could feel something wrong and didn't know why.
Eli whispered, "I'm sorry. I'm trying."
Nina's whole face twisted. She almost spoke again, and Mara grabbed her wrist softly and held it.
Nina shook like she was breaking apart.
Jace typed on his phone and showed it to Nina.
DON'T DO IT.WE'LL FIND ANOTHER WAY.
Nina stared at Jace, and her eyes went hard.
She grabbed her notebook and wrote so fast the pen squeaked.
YOU DON'T GET TO SAY THAT.YOU STILL HAVE YOUR BROTHER.
Jace flinched like she hit him. His face went blank again, too calm, too empty.
Nina's mom started crying quietly, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. She wrote on the grocery receipt again, begging.
PLEASE.WE CAN'T LOSE HIM.
Nina's dad wrote one more line, smaller.
WE ALREADY SOLD OUR PRIDE.DON'T MAKE IT FOR NOTHING.
Nina stared at the laptop offer.
Restore dependent recognition: 24 hoursPayment: FUTURE PATH (major)Button: CONFIRM
Nina's hands shook so much she couldn't hold the pen anymore.
She looked at Mara.
Mara's eyes stung. She didn't want Nina to do it. She also didn't know how to stop a countdown that had teeth.
Mara typed a note and showed it to Nina.
IF YOU PAY,THEY WILL ASK AGAIN.THIS IS NOT THE END.
Nina read it. Her lips trembled. She nodded once like she understood.
Then Nina stepped closer to the laptop.
Her finger hovered over CONFIRM.
Eli blinked at her, still lost.
Nina didn't speak. She couldn't risk it.
She pressed CONFIRM.
The laptop made a soft sound, like a receipt printing in a store.
Nina's phone buzzed deep.
A message flashed.
PAYMENT PROCESSED: FUTURE PATH (major)Item taken: COLLEGE FUTURE
Nina's knees went weak. She grabbed the edge of the counter to stay standing.
Eli blinked again.
Then his face changed.
Like a fog lifted.
He stared at Nina and his eyes filled with sudden relief.
"Nina," he said, sure this time, like the name finally fit in his mouth. "You're here."
Nina's breath came out in a shaky sob she swallowed hard. She nodded fast, tears falling.
Eli stepped forward and hugged her tight.
Mara's chest hurt so much she couldn't breathe right for a second.
It worked.
For now.
Then Nina's phone buzzed again.
A second message, calmer than the first.
Restoration active: 24:00:00Renewal may be required.Recommended: Upgrade to maintain stability.
Nina went still.
Because the system never fixed anything. It rented it back to you.
Theo's phone buzzed too—his 24-hour timer kept eating him, quiet and steady, like a clock that wanted blood.
And Jace's phone buzzed in his pocket, a short sharp vibration, like the system was happy to see another big trade.
Nina pulled back from Eli's hug and looked at her parents, tears running.
Her mom tried to smile through tears.
Her dad looked like someone who had just signed a confession.
Nina looked down at her own screen again.
Under the "College Future" payment, one more line appeared, small and cruel:
Future Path: LIMITED
Nina's shoulders shook.
She saved her brother for a day.
And she felt the door to her own future quietly close.
