Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 30 — LARK’S ROLE

They did not stay in the parking lot.

Theo waved them toward a darker street with fewer lights. He held up one finger, then pointed down, like: move now.

They walked fast. No talking. No names. Just shoes on pavement and breaths held tight.

They reached an empty bus shelter with a broken ad screen. The glass was scratched. The street was quiet.

Theo pulled out a paper and wrote big:

SAFE FOR 3 MINUTES.

Mara nodded once.

Nina turned to Lark right away. Her eyes were wet and furious. Her hands shook.

She wrote on paper so hard the pen scratched:

YOU LIED.

Lark's face crumpled. They shook their head fast and wrote back, hands trembling:

I DIDN'T LIE.I HID.I WAS SCARED.

Theo took out his camera and held it low. He showed the group one photo he had snapped earlier, not a screenshot. A photo of Jace's phone message.

FIELD ASSET: LARKOBJECTIVE: ISOLATE MARA

Mara stared at the words again, and her stomach twisted. It felt like being cut with paper.

Mara wrote slowly:

WERE YOU SENT TO BREAK US?

Lark's eyes filled with tears. They wrote back fast:

YES.BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO.I'M TRAPPED TOO.

Jace stood a step away, watching, face tight. He looked like he wanted to step in and protect Mara. Or maybe he wanted to control what she heard. Mara couldn't tell anymore.

Theo wrote:

IF YOU'RE TRAPPED, PROVE IT.

Lark swallowed hard. They pulled their foil pouch open and slid their phone out for one second.

The screen lit by itself.

A page loaded without a tap.

COMPLIANCE CHECK — FIELD ASSETReport status in: 00:30Failure penalty: identity degradation

Lark's hands shook. They shoved the phone back into the pouch fast, like it burned.

Nina's eyes went wide.

Mara's chest tightened.

Theo wrote:

SO IT'S REAL.

Lark nodded hard, tears falling now, silent.

Lark wrote:

I CAN'T TURN IT OFF.IT OPENS BY ITSELF.IT REPORTS WHEN I PANIC.IT REPORTS WHEN I GET CLOSE TO YOU.

Mara felt cold all over.

That meant Lark didn't even need to betray them on purpose.

The system could use their body like a door sensor.

Nina wrote, shaking:

SO YOU'RE A TRACKER.

Lark flinched like they got hit. They wrote back:

YES.BUT I'M ALSO A KEY.

Mara's eyes narrowed.

Mara wrote:

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Lark wiped their face with their sleeve. Their hands kept shaking as they wrote.

I'M PRE-SIGNED.I HAVE ACCESS PATHS OTHER PEOPLE DON'T.THE SYSTEM MOVES ME BETWEEN SCHOOLS.BETWEEN FILES.I SEE LAYERS.

Theo leaned forward, writing fast:

WHAT LAYERS?

Lark wrote:

THE INSIDE LAYER.

Mara's stomach turned.

Inside layer. The part behind the app. The part behind the building. The part where "consent" was code and doors and punishments.

Theo wrote:

HOW DO WE GET IN?

Lark looked at Mara. Their eyes were scared and honest at the same time.

Lark wrote slowly, like the truth was heavy.

YOU CAN'T BREAK IT FROM OUTSIDE.YOU CAN ONLY CHANGE WORDS FROM INSIDE.

Mara's throat went dry.

Mara wrote:

WE TRIED TO GET PROOF.WE HAVE IT.WHY ISN'T THAT ENOUGH?

Lark wrote:

PROOF MAKES PEOPLE MAD.BUT MAD PEOPLE STILL TAP ACCEPT.THE SYSTEM LIVES IN HABIT.IN DEFAULTS.IN "OKAY."

Mara understood. It was the worst kind of truth.

People didn't read.

People wanted easy.

People wanted calm.

Theo wrote:

SO WE NEED A WAY TO EDIT TERMS.

Lark nodded.

Lark wrote:

YES.BUT EDITING COSTS PAYMENT.MEMORY OR BOND.THE SYSTEM WILL MAKE YOU PAY.

Nina wrote:

WE ALREADY PAY EVERY DAY.

Lark wrote back:

INSIDE PAYMENTS ARE WORSE.BECAUSE YOU FEEL THEM RIGHT AWAY.

Mara's chest tightened.

Mara thought of her shampoo smell disappearing. Thought of losing two years. Thought of the Regret Ledger like a menu.

Mara wrote:

WHAT IS THE ENTRY?

Lark stared at Mara for a moment. Then Lark wrote the words Mara feared.

YOU MUST SIGN AGAIN.ON PURPOSE.ADVANCED ACCEPT ALL.

Mara's stomach dropped.

Sign again.

Not by accident.

Not by watching.

By choosing it.

Theo wrote, shaking:

THAT'S SUICIDE.

Lark wrote:

NO.IT'S A DOOR.A BAD DOOR.BUT IT'S A DOOR.

Nina's hands shook as she wrote:

AND IF MARA DOESN'T DO IT?

Lark wrote:

THEN YOU CAN'T REWRITE TERMS.AND ELI'S BOND WILL BE SOLD.AND MARA'S REGRET WILL BE REDEEMED.AND THE SYSTEM WILL GO OS-LEVEL.

Mara's breath caught.

OS-level. The thing they feared most. The thing that would make this not just a school horror, but a world horror.

Jace finally stepped forward. He didn't speak, but he wrote on his phone and showed Mara.

DON'T DO IT.IT WILL OWN YOU DEEPER.

Mara wrote back, fast:

IT ALREADY OWNS ME.I'M A NON-PERSON.

Jace's face tightened. He typed again.

THEN LET ME CARRY IT.LET ME USE PROXY.

Mara stared at him.

That sounded like control.

That sounded like another leash.

Mara wrote slowly:

YOU ALREADY "OWN" MY REGRET.THAT'S NOT CARRYING.THAT'S HOLDING.

Jace flinched. His calm cracked for a second.

Nina shook with anger and fear. She wrote one line, sharp and desperate:

WE DON'T HAVE TIME.

Theo wrote:

WE NEED A PLAN.TWO WITNESSES.ONE REGRET.CLAUSE KEYS.

Mara's mind raced. She remembered the clause fragment they saw earlier.

Escape requires: two witnesses + one regret.

Mara looked at the group.

Two witnesses meant people who could confirm she chose freely.

One regret meant something she could give up without letting the system choose her most important bond.

But the inside layer was different. Inside layer was a maze.

Lark wrote one more thing, smaller:

IF YOU ENTER,THE SYSTEM WILL SPEAK LIKE PEOPLE YOU TRUST.IT WILL TRY TO TRICK YOU INTO SAYING THE TRUTH OUT LOUD.DON'T.

Mara's phone buzzed in her pocket.

A black screen opened by itself.

White text.

ACCEPT ALL (ADVANCED)

Below it, smaller text.

ENTER CONSENT ARCHITECTUREEDITING RESTRICTEDPAYMENTS REQUIRED

At the bottom were two buttons.

ACCEPTCANCEL

Mara's hands shook so hard she almost dropped the phone.

This was it.

The door.

Jace reached out like he wanted to stop her, but he didn't touch her.

Nina's eyes begged her.

Theo looked terrified.

Lark looked guilty and scared.

Mara stared at the button.

And she knew the truth.

If she pressed Accept, she might lose pieces of herself.

If she didn't press it, the system would keep taking anyway.

Mara took a slow breath.

She looked at her friends.

Then she looked back at the screen.

Her thumb hovered over ACCEPT.
