Chapter 270 - Chapter 267: The Uncanny Encounter Part-5

PL saw VT close his hand.

When he opened it again, there was nothing inside.

The private attendant lifted the unopened bottle from the silver bucket and carried it toward the service corridor.

"What did you tell him?" PL asked.

VT adjusted one cuff.

"To do his job."

"The bottle was already here."

"Then he will bring it back."

Below them, June continued looking toward the upper table.

Cherry said her name again.

PL had spent more than a year imagining what she would do if the old group saw her.

In one version, she smiled.

In another, she walked past them as if Foundation Year had been a hallway she no longer used.

She had never imagined standing beside VT while he watched June.

"Go," he said.

PL looked at him.

"You wanted a reunion. Have one."

"And you?"

"I already know everybody here."

It was not an answer.

PL descended anyway.

Cherry reached her first.

"It is you."

PL stopped at the bottom of the staircase.

"You sound disappointed."

"I sound confused. You disappeared."

Bunny moved beside Cherry.

"We messaged you."

"My number changed."

"Your accounts disappeared too."

"Those numbers changed."

The old joke did not become funny simply because PL delivered it with a smile.

June stood a little farther back.

NS remained beside her.

TZ watched the upper table instead of the reunion.

"Where did you go?" June asked.

PL looked at her.

"Military medical school."

Cherry's expression changed.

"You transferred?"

"Recently."

"From where?"

"It is complicated."

June glanced toward VT.

"How complicated?"

"He made some calls."

The sentence admitted more than PL wanted.

NS looked upstairs.

VT raised his glass toward them.

"Are you with him?" Bunny asked.

PL folded her arms.

"That question has several meanings."

"Choose one," Cherry said.

"Yes."

Nobody asked whether the answer belonged to the relationship or the danger.

The music filled the silence for them.

"Where is XH?" PL asked.

June's expression became careful.

"Studying."

"He doesn't know I am here?"

"Most of us didn't know you were anywhere."

PL accepted the injury without defending herself.

"He messaged me when I left," she said. "I didn't answer."

June looked toward the dance floor.

"He is familiar with unfinished messages."

NS heard the name inside the sentence.

So did PL.

"I didn't come to cause a problem," she said.

"Nobody does," TZ replied. "Problems arrive independently."

For one second, he sounded so much like the boy from Foundation Year that PL almost smiled.

Then VT reached the bottom of the stairs.

The reunion became his.

"PL forgot introductions," VT said.

"We know who you are," Cherry replied.

"That saves time."

He stood beside PL but looked at June.

"I heard you attended the United Kingdom briefing."

June's eyes narrowed.

"From whom?"

"The university publishes attendance for certain international programs."

"Not publicly."

"Publicly is a flexible word."

NS moved closer.

"You have a strange interest in Health Track schedules."

VT smiled.

"Education matters to my family."

"Control matters to your family," NS replied.

PL looked between them.

Neither boy raised his voice.

The people nearest the table moved away anyway.

June stopped the exchange before it found a sharper subject.

"I am only researching programs."

"Then research with useful people," VT said. "My father's foundation has contacts at several schools in London. There are private placements that never reach a public brochure."

"I want to apply through the normal process."

"The normal process is for people without doors."

"Then I will build one."

VT's smile widened.

"That is why I like you."

The sentence was intimate enough to insult both women standing near him.

PL looked at his face.

June looked at her.

"You don't know me," June said.

"Not yet."

"There is no yet."

She said it quietly.

VT received the rejection with a small nod.

"Ask PL what one phone call can accomplish."

PL's jaw tightened.

"It can make debt look like opportunity."

VT turned toward her for the first time.

The smile remained.

Nothing behind it did.

PL knew that expression.

She had seen it when a military registrar questioned whether her transfer papers had arrived through the correct office.

The registrar apologized the next morning.

Two weeks later, he no longer worked at the front desk.

She had seen it when a student at the medical school laughed at VT's security detail and called him a junta prince.

The student withdrew from a scholarship interview three days later.

Nobody explained why.

VT never threatened people where a recording could hear him.

He offered rides, introductions, rooms, and second chances. Doors opened. Documents moved. Problems disappeared.

Only later did the favor reveal its price.

PL's transfer card sat inside her purse now.

Every time she looked at it, she saw a future she had wanted and a debt she had never agreed to owe.

June did not know any of that.

NS appeared to know enough.

That may have been why VT enjoyed speaking to him.

It was easier to frighten a stranger.

It was more satisfying to provoke someone who recognized the weapon.

"You were unhappy before I helped you."

"That doesn't mean I owe you happiness afterward."

June moved closer to PL.

"Come sit with us."

PL almost accepted.

VT placed his hand against the back of her waist again.

It looked affectionate from the dance floor.

PL felt the instruction inside it.

"We have our own table," she said.

"Of course you do," NS replied.

VT's eyes returned to June.

"When you get tired of applying through locked doors, you know where to find me."

"I already said no."

"And I heard you."

He walked away before anyone could point out the difference between hearing and accepting.

PL followed three steps behind.

At the staircase, she looked back.

June was watching her.

PL wanted to say something useful.

The only words she found were silent.

Do not drink anything he sends.

At 10:26, the library lights changed to night mode.

Half the ceiling dimmed automatically.

JP looked around the study room.

"Even the building wants us to leave."

"The building wants to reduce electricity use," Jihye said.

"A politically safe interpretation."

Anna passed him the emergency handover exercise.

"Twenty-one-year-old patient. Sudden confusion at a nightclub. Give the report."

JP stared at the page.

"This course has become cruelly repetitive."

"Give the report."

He lifted a pen like a training phone.

"Adult woman with sudden altered mental status after one reported drink. Airway open, breathing slow, pulse present, glucose normal, possible toxic exposure. Emergency transport requested."

"Good," NC said. "What else?"

"She remains with trusted friends. The glass has been preserved. Venue staff have been notified."

Kitty looked toward me.

"See? He can be serious."

"I find the accusation damaging," JP said.

My phone vibrated against the table.

For one instant, everyone looked at it.

The message came from Grandmother.

GRANDMOTHER: SLEEPING. STOP CHECKING.

I typed back.

XH: PEOPLE WHO ARE SLEEPING DO NOT SEND MESSAGES.

GRANDMOTHER: THEN THIS IS A DREAM. STUDY.

Kitty read the exchange.

"She really does like me more."

"You have known her for one lunch."

"A decisive lunch."

NC's phone lit with a new story from Cherry.

She opened it before remembering the study rule.

PL appeared at the edge of the frame.

The room went quiet.

"Is that PL?" Anna asked.

"Yes," NC said.

Jihye enlarged the image.

"The man beside her is VT."

JP stopped joking.

I took the phone.

PL looked older than the last photograph in my memory.

Not by years.

By decisions.

"She is dating him," Jihye said.

"How do you know?"

"Cherry added text."

At the bottom of the story, one sentence flashed beneath the music.

FOUNDATION YEAR GHOST ARRIVED WITH THE WORST POSSIBLE BOYFRIEND.

Kitty watched me.

"Do you want to contact her?"

"She never answered the last time."

"That wasn't my question."

I looked at PL's face inside the small screen.

"Not tonight."

Kitty nodded.

She believed me.

I wished that made the answer easier.

At Bliss, the private attendant returned with the bottle.

VT did not look at it.

PL did.

The foil remained sealed.

The bottle itself told her nothing.

The attendant opened it beside the upper table and poured several glasses. One went to VT. One went to PL. The others remained on the tray.

"Send them downstairs," VT said.

PL placed her hand over her glass.

"They refused."

"Hospitality is not a negotiation."

"You treat everything like one."

"That is why I usually win."

The attendant carried the tray toward the stairs.

PL followed.

"Where are you going?" VT asked.

"To finish the reunion."

"You said they forgot you."

"Then it cannot threaten you."

She did not wait for permission.

Below, TZ stopped the tray before it reached the table.

"We did not order this."

"Compliments of the upper table," the attendant said.

"Return it."

Bunny looked at the sparkling glasses.

"They are already poured."

"That does not make them ours," TZ replied.

June lifted her own glass from the table.

"We have drinks."

She had ordered one glass of wine from the main bar after arriving and had consumed less than half.

VT appeared behind the attendant.

"One toast," he said. "To PL's return."

PL reached the table.

"She doesn't need a toast."

"Everyone needs witnesses."

He lifted one of the tray glasses.

June kept her own.

"One toast," she said. "Then you return to your table."

NS looked toward her.

"You don't have to prove anything."

"I am not proving anything."

"Then don't drink with him."

June's face hardened.

"You are doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Turning concern into permission."

"This is not the time."

"You always choose the time after making the decision for me."

The argument drew every eye at the table.

KM and Shinso watched from the edge of the dance floor.

Cherry moved closer to June.

Bunny placed her bottle down.

TZ looked at VT.

PL looked at the drinks.

For less than a minute, June's glass disappeared behind the attendant's tray.

When the table cleared again, a glass stood in the same place.

The same pale wine.

The same slice of citrus on the rim.

The citrus faced the opposite direction.

PL saw it.

She also saw the private attendant avoid her eyes.

VT raised his glass.

"To old friends."

June lifted hers.

PL opened her mouth.

The music dropped before the next song and hundreds of students shouted into the silence.

Her warning disappeared beneath them.

June drank.

VT did not.

At first, nothing changed.

VT returned upstairs.

PL remained near the student table.

NS and June stopped arguing because both had become too angry to continue in public.

Cherry pulled June back toward the dance floor.

"One song," she said. "Then we leave before the boys create a national emergency."

June agreed.

Halfway through the song, she left Cherry and crossed to NS.

He stood near the bottom of the staircase, watching VT's table instead of the dance floor.

"You are terrible at relaxing," she said.

"I was told to stay near you."

"You told yourself."

"It was excellent advice."

June moved closer so she would not have to shout.

"One song. No warnings. No instructions."

"That seems unsafe."

"Then be brave."

She took his hand before he answered.

NS followed her into the edge of the crowd.

They did not dance like a public couple.

They had become skilled at leaving one careful space between their bodies whenever friends looked toward them.

Tonight, June closed half of it.

The music covered what she said next.

"I don't want the United Kingdom only because of the programs."

NS looked at her.

"Why else?"

"I want to go somewhere nobody already knows which version of me they prefer."

"That sounds lonely."

"It sounds quiet."

"You hate quiet."

"I hate being watched while I fail."

The answer came too easily.

June felt it leave and almost tried to catch it.

Instead, she rested her fingers against the front of his jacket.

"Everyone thinks second position means I am doing well," she continued. "It only means I failed slightly better than everybody behind me."

"You did not fail."

"See? You corrected me before listening."

NS became still.

"Then tell me without asking me to fix it."

The lights changed from violet to blue.

June looked at his face as if it had moved farther away.

"I am tired of people loving the person they expect me to become. XH did it. My family does it. Maybe I do it to myself."

"And me?"

"You look at me like a decision you already made."

"That is not the same."

"It might be worse."

He could have defended himself.

For once, he did not.

"If you go," he said, "I won't ask you to become smaller so the distance feels less dangerous."

June's fingers tightened against his jacket.

"Would you ask me to stay?"

The question reached him beneath the music.

NS looked toward her mouth, then back at her eyes.

"Not here."

"Coward."

"Probably."

She smiled.

The smile softened into something unfocused.

"The music sounds underwater."

"How much did you drink?"

"Enough to tell you the truth."

"June."

"Do not turn this into a patient assessment."

She stepped back before he could ask again.

At that moment, his phone vibrated with a message from his driver about the closing road near the elevated station.

June pointed toward it.

"Your kingdom needs you."

"Stay with Cherry."

"There. You lasted almost one song."

She returned to the dance floor.

NS watched until Cherry took her hand.

He told himself June was tipsy.

He did not yet know she had consumed less than one glass.

He returned upstairs to arrange the route home.

The artificial stars rotated above them.

PL took June's glass from the table and placed a clean napkin around its base.

TZ noticed.

"What are you doing?"

"Do not let anyone clear this."

"Why?"

PL looked toward the upper level.

"I think it was moved."

TZ's expression changed.

"Moved where?"

"I don't know."

"That isn't enough."

"It has to be enough for now."

She signaled to the nearest floor attendant.

"Keep this glass here. Do not wash it. I need your manager and whoever handles medical incidents."

The attendant looked toward VT's table.

"Was there a problem with service?"

"There may be a problem with the drink."

The attendant stopped smiling.

He left without touching it.

On the dance floor, June missed a step.

Cherry caught her arm.

"Your shoes?"

"The floor moved."

"The floor is supposed to move emotionally."

June laughed.

The sound came half a second late.

"I think the wine reached me."

"You barely drank it."

"Then I have become affordable."

She tried to dance again.

The lights dragged behind every movement.

Blue became violet too slowly.

Faces appeared to repeat at the edges of her vision.

She turned toward Cherry and found Bunny instead.

"Where did Cherry go?"

Cherry still held her arm.

"I'm here."

June stared at her.

"Right."

The answer frightened Cherry before June's knees weakened.

"TZ," she called.

The music swallowed his name.

NS had returned to his upper table to answer a message from his driver.

From above, he saw the change before he understood it.

June no longer moved with the song.

She moved as if the song reached her several seconds late.

He left his phone on the table.

Another call lit the screen behind him.

HS CALLING

NS was already descending the stairs.

Cherry and Bunny brought June back to the table.

"Sit," TZ said.

"I am sitting."

She was still standing.

TZ pulled out the chair.

June lowered herself too quickly and struck the table with her hip.

"How much did you drink?" Bunny asked.

"One. Less than one."

"Any medication?"

"No."

"Did you eat?"

"Yes. I think."

Her head turned toward the stairs.

NS was coming toward her.

For one relieved second, she smiled.

"He came," she said.

"He was already here," Cherry replied.

June did not seem to hear.

PL looked at the glass.

Then at VT.

He stood behind the smoked railing with one hand in his pocket.

He was watching June.

Not worried.

Waiting.

PL opened the old conversation she had avoided since Foundation Year.

The final message still waited there.

XH: DID YOU REACH HOME?

For the first time, she answered.

PL: XH, IT'S ME. JUNE IS AT BLISS. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH HER DRINK. COME NOW.

At 10:57, my phone vibrated in the library.

At the same moment, June reached for NS and missed his hand.
