Chapter 27 - Chapter Twenty-Five: The Moment Everyone Saw

The first thing that changed was the way people looked. It wasn't a dramatic stare or a wave of stage-whispered gossip, just a subtle, persistent shifting of eyes. Campus 2 had always been a place where rumors moved faster than class schedules, but today, the very air felt sharpened by attention. Conversations slowed to a crawl whenever XH walked past, phones were held just a little higher than usual, and laughter cut off a little too cleanly. XH felt the weight of it before he fully understood it, but June noticed it immediately.

They walked side-by-side from the main building toward the courtyard, neither touching nor actively avoiding each other. There was an unspoken precision in the way their steps aligned, June neither pulling ahead nor falling back. It wasn't an display of closeness; it was a deliberate choice of positioning.

"People are watching," XH murmured, his eyes fixed ahead.

June gave a tight nod. "They have been for a while."

He glanced down at her. "Does that bother you?"

June thought for a moment, adjusting to the rhythm of their pace. "Only if we pretend not to notice."

That was typical of June—she never denied reality just to make things easier. When they finally reached the courtyard, they ground to a halt. The space was significantly more crowded than usual, with students clustering around the central notice board, their phones out and voices overlapping in a low hum. Near the edge of the crowd stood Kitty. She wasn't alone; a guy stood beside her, his arm draped casually across the back of the bench. He wasn't touching her, but he was close enough to suggest a comfortable familiarity, saying everything without uttering a word. Kitty leaned forward slightly, laughing a little too easily.

XH felt his chest tighten at the sight, a reaction June caught instantly but chose not to comment on. Instead, she adjusted her bag strap and stepped forward, fully into view, planting herself beside XH in a way that didn't ask for permission.

The scrutiny around them intensified. It wasn't hostile, just intensely curious—someone whispered, someone else nudged a friend, and a few people lifted their phones, pretending to scroll. Kitty's laughter faltered for a fraction of a second when she caught sight of them, but she recovered quickly, making a sudden, reckless choice.

Standing up abruptly, she left the guy beside her blinking in confusion. "Everything okay?" he asked.

"Yeah," Kitty smiled brightly, her voice carrying slightly. "Walk with me."

They moved together, not away from the tension, but directly toward the center of it—straight toward XH and June. Kitty stopped right in front of them, her expression entirely calm, though her eyes were sharp.

"Hey," she said lightly.

"Hey," XH replied, his voice stiff.

June inclined her head politely. "Kitty."

Kitty's gaze flicked between them, taking note of how close they stood and how neither of them gave an inch. Her smile widened, masking the tension underneath. "This is my friend," she said, resting her hand casually on the guy's arm. "We're together."

The word landed like breaking glass. It wasn't shouted or dramatic, which only made it feel more deliberate. XH's breath caught in his throat, a faint "Oh" escaping him, but June didn't flinch. She simply looked at Kitty, assessing the move and understanding immediately what this was: armor, a public shield.

"I see," June said calmly.

Kitty watched June's face, looking for cracks, but found none. A tight knot formed in Kitty's own chest; she had needed this to hurt, but the blow hadn't landed. Turning back to the guy, she leaned into him slightly. "We're heading out. Thought we'd say hi."

The guy smiled awkwardly, shifting on his feet. "Nice to meet you."

"You too," XH nodded tightly.

Kitty held XH's gaze for a fraction of a second longer than necessary. This wasn't a plea for him to stop her; it was a line being crossed on purpose. Then she turned and walked away, her laughter returning, louder and more forced this time.

As XH stood frozen, June exhaled slowly. "That," she said quietly, "wasn't about you."

XH blinked, tearing his eyes away from the retreating pair. "It wasn't?"

June shook her head. "It was about survival."

XH watched Kitty disappear into the gathering crowd, his stomach twisting. "She didn't need to do that."

"No," June's voice softened. "But she needed to feel in control."

Around them, the murmurs intensified, the crowd absorbing the interaction they had just witnessed. Phrases like "So it's true" and "Guess he chose" drifted through the air. The word chose echoed painfully in XH's mind, and June felt the sting of it too. She stepped a fraction closer to him, still not touching him, but making their alignment undeniable. She didn't do it for his sake; she did it because pretending otherwise would only invite more chaos.

"You don't have to do this," XH began, looking down at her.

June shook her head gently. "This isn't pressure, XH. This is clarity. We don't owe anyone explanations, but we don't hide either."

XH swallowed hard as the full weight of the situation settled on him. This wasn't a confession of feelings; it was a calculated stance. He nodded once. "Okay." June didn't smile, but she stayed right where she was, and that alone spoke volumes to the onlookers.

The fragile moment was instantly shattered when a wave of notifications hit the courtyard like a physical blow. Phones buzzed simultaneously, creating a ripple of sound that cut off conversations mid-sentence. Faces dropped in unison. XH's phone vibrated violently in his hand, but it was June who read hers aloud, her voice steady but tightly strained.

"Emergency Update: Program Transition Window. Due to continued external review, students may submit immediate requests to transition into local government–accredited programs. This window will remain open for 72 hours."

The courtyard exploded into a panic. "This is it," someone cried out, while others panicked over what their parents would say. Students immediately began rushing toward the administration offices, calls were dialed in a frenzy, and tears appeared openly.

A few yards away, Kitty stopped dead in her tracks. She stared at her phone, the color draining from her face. The guy beside her said something, but she didn't hear him, her mind racing. This wasn't a rumor anymore; it was a countdown.

Across the courtyard, June felt the tension snap into something much sharper. "Seventy-two hours," she murmured. "They're forcing decisions."

"This is insane," XH said, his head spinning.

"This is leverage," June corrected. She reached for his wrist instinctively, then caught herself, neither pulling away nor gripping tighter—just maintaining enough contact to anchor them both. "We need to talk. Privately."

As XH nodded and they moved away from the chaos, Kitty watched them go. The guy with her touched her arm gently. "Hey, are you okay?"

Kitty nodded automatically. "Yeah." But she wasn't. She had wanted control, but instead, she had chosen chaos.

Safely inside a quieter hallway, June finally stopped and turned to face him. "This is where things get real."

XH ran a hand through his hair, exhausted. "I know."

"You saw what Kitty did," June continued, her eyes searching his. "And you saw what people assumed. They think you chose."

"I chose not to run," he said honestly, meeting her gaze.

June studied him for a long beat. "That's not the same as choosing me."

"I know," XH replied softly. "But it's closer than I've ever been."

June exhaled, the tension leaving her shoulders. "I'm not asking for promises."

"Good. I'm bad at those."

A ghost of a smile touched her lips, but vanished just as quickly. "What I'm asking," June continued, "is whether you're willing to stand with me while everything else shakes."

XH didn't hesitate this time. "Yes." The word felt terrifying, but entirely right.

June nodded, accepting the answer. "Then that's our stance." It wasn't love, and it wasn't a label. It was just a stance.

Outside, as evening began to fall, Kitty sat alone on the concrete steps, her phone buzzing with unread messages that she refused to look at. The guy stood awkwardly a few paces away, sensing the shift. "You want to talk?" he asked.

Kitty shook her head, keeping her eyes glued to the concrete. "I need air." Understanding the cue, he nodded politely and walked off into the dusk.

Kitty stared at the ground, replaying the afternoon over and over in her head. The word together. The way June hadn't flinched. The way XH hadn't chased after her. She had wanted to protect herself, but instead, she had just put her vulnerability on display. Something inside her cracked quietly, and she wiped her eyes with an angry, aggressive motion.

"Idiot," she muttered to herself. She didn't know yet whether she had completely lost XH, but she knew she had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

By the time night fell, Campus 2 felt thoroughly fractured. Some students were already packing forms, while others clung stubbornly to their original dreams, leaving the private university to absorb yet another wave of fear. In the middle of the quiet campus, the reality of their new landscape became clear. Kitty stood alone, realizing her armor could cut both ways; June stood firm, no longer leaning on anyone, but no longer retreating either; and XH stood between them, finally visible, and finally accountable. Nothing had been resolved, but nothing was hidden anymore—and that, more than anything, changed everything.
