Chapter 60 - blood on her lips

Everything was crisp and cold when I finally recovered. The sea served as a soothing background noise to the dark night.

"Mary?" I called softly, turning to see her lying in a heap beside me. "Mary?" I could feel the fear crawling up my spine as I stood up.

My non-existent heart started to beat fast, anxiety almost crippling me at the thought that I might've hurt her.

The first thing I did was search for her pulse at the base of her neck. It was very faint, barely there. 

What the hell had I done?

But I should be happy, shouldn't I?

I'd wanted to get rid of her for so long. Her death would solve all my problems.

I wouldn't need to worry about the way she plagued my thoughts all the time, or how I woke up from every dream with her name at the tip of my tongue. 

My chest wouldn't be burdened with that sharp pain that shot through it every time I turned her away. Or have to watch the bright lights in her eyes dim every single time I pushed her away from me.
