Chapter 56 : Shadow Collective Delivery - Part 1

The coordinates Ziton Moj provided are neutral space between Mandalore and Hutt territories—no government jurisdiction, no Republic patrols, perfect for criminal transactions. Death Watch transport exits hyperspace with my largest single delivery ever secured in cargo holds.

One thousand rifles. Five hundred heavy weapons. First batch of vehicles will follow monthly per System limits, but the small arms are complete.

Moj's freighter is massive—Black Sun vessel refitted for Shadow Collective operations. Pyke Syndicate markings visible alongside Hutt Cartel identifiers. Maul's criminal coalition represented physically through three major underworld organizations united under his leadership.

"Master's exposure is significant," R4 observes from secure position in transport's cockpit. "Shadow Collective represents galaxy's most dangerous criminal networks. Direct meeting with leadership creates vulnerability."

"Master is executing 8M credit transaction," Eight counters. "Exposure is acceptable cost of business at this scale. Additionally, establishing reputation with Shadow Collective provides long-term strategic value."

Death Watch pilot—veteran named Kren—handles docking procedures professionally. "Never thought I'd be delivering weapons to Pykes. Strange career trajectory."

"Welcome to my entire operation," I mutter.

Airlock cycles. Moj waits on other side with six heavily armed guards—Pyke Syndicate warriors who've seen extensive combat. He's shorter than humans, typical Pyke physiology, but his presence suggests competence earned through violence.

"Kade Varro. Pleasure to meet supplier who can actually deliver quality equipment on schedule." His voice carries professional respect. "Lord Maul speaks highly of your capabilities."

"Maul knows about me specifically. That's concerning."

"Appreciate the acknowledgment. Shall we inspect shipment?"

The cargo transfer takes two hours. Moj's people examine every weapon with professional scrutiny—checking manufacturing quality, testing mechanisms, verifying specifications. They find everything perfect because System equipment is perfect. That's simultaneously advantage and exposure risk—technology this good stands out.

"These rifles," Moj observes, examining MA5D's construction. "This is beyond current galactic manufacturing standards. Tolerance precision, materials science, integrated targeting systems—where do you source this technology?"

"Trade secrets. My supply network prefers confidentiality."

"Understandable. But Lord Maul will want to meet source personally. Establish direct relationship rather than working through intermediary."

The threat is delivered casually. Not hostile but stating inevitable consequence—I'm now on Maul's radar as supplier worth personal attention.

"I'm amenable to meeting once vehicle deliveries complete. Gives Lord Maul time to evaluate equipment quality firsthand."

"Wise strategy. Lord Maul appreciates methodical approaches." Moj signals his people to continue loading. "Payment will transfer in three installments as agreed. First installment processes now."

[ SHADOW COLLECTIVE PAYMENT RECEIVED: 2,670,000 CREDITS ]

[ CURRENT BALANCE: 4,591,245 CREDITS ]

[ DEATH WATCH COMMISSION DUE: 800,000 CREDITS ]

The number is surreal. Four and a half million credits. Six months ago I had 900 credits and desperation. Now I'm millionaire arms dealer conducting transactions that would make Republic corporations jealous.

"Commission for Death Watch," I tell Moj. "Per our arrangement, they receive ten percent for facilitating introduction and maintaining exclusive supplier status."

"Already accounted for in payment structure. Your organization receives appropriate compensation." He transfers credit chip to Kren. "Eight hundred thousand as agreed."

Kren accepts chip with Mandalorian warrior's professional composure that probably conceals shock at amount. Death Watch just earned 800k for basically allowing me to use their transport and protection. Excellent return on minimal investment.

After cargo transfer completes, Moj gestures to private conference room on freighter. "Brief discussion before you depart."

Inside, he's more direct: "Lord Maul requests audience with you. Appreciates quality and wishes to establish long-term partnership. Standard arrangement—you become Shadow Collective's preferred supplier, we guarantee consistent high-volume contracts."

"What does 'preferred supplier' mean specifically?"

"Exclusive arrangement within criminal networks Lord Maul controls. You supply us, we pay premium rates and provide protection from rival organizations. Also means you don't supply our enemies—Black Sun rivals, Separatist loyalists, anyone actively opposing Shadow Collective interests."

That's problematic. Exclusive arrangement with Shadow Collective conflicts with my Death Watch contract, clone network, and potentially Ventress's operations.

"I have existing obligations that might conflict. Death Watch exclusivity, Republic clone networks, specialized clients whose identities remain confidential."

"Lord Maul is pragmatic. Existing contracts honored. Requirement applies to future clients—screen them against Shadow Collective enemy list before accepting."

"That's less restrictive than expected but still limits flexibility."

"When does Lord Maul want this meeting?"

"Soon. Once vehicle deliveries demonstrate continued quality. Refusal is..." He pauses diplomatically. "Inadvisable. Lord Maul values relationships with useful partners. Prefers maintaining them through mutual benefit. But disrespect requires... correction."

The threat is clear despite polite delivery. Maul is former Sith Lord with reputation for extreme violence. Refusing meeting would be interpreted as disrespect. Disrespect means death.

"I'll meet Lord Maul after vehicle deliveries complete. Gives him opportunity to assess equipment comprehensively before discussing long-term partnership."

"Acceptable timeline. Lord Maul is patient." Moj stands, meeting concluded. "One other matter—your technology is decades ahead of standard. That creates questions about source. Be prepared to provide satisfactory explanations or alternative arrangements regarding information security."

"Understood."

Walking back to Death Watch transport, the weight of situation settles. I'm now on personal radar of galaxy's most dangerous crime lord. Former Sith apprentice who killed his way to power, unified criminal networks through brutality and strategic brilliance, and currently building shadow empire to rival Republic and Separatists.

And he wants face-to-face meeting to discuss making me preferred supplier.

"Master has attracted dangerous attention," R4 notes during hyperspace transit back to Concordia. "Maul is extraordinarily dangerous—Force-sensitive, psychologically unstable, ruthlessly pragmatic. Meeting him creates severe exposure."

"Meeting him is necessary. Refusing creates worse exposure—immediate terminal consequences."

Eight agrees: "Maul partnership provides substantial strategic value. Shadow Collective represents largest criminal network in galaxy. Preferred supplier status ensures ongoing high-volume contracts. Risk is acceptable given rewards."

"Risk is potentially terminal given Maul's psychological profile and past behavior patterns with disappointing associates."

"Then master must avoid disappointing him. Simple strategy."

"Your strategies are rarely simple in execution."

Back at Concordia base, I transfer Death Watch's commission to Vizsla directly. Eight hundred thousand credits—second-largest payment he's received from me after initial equipment contract.

"Generous compensation for minimal involvement," he acknowledges. "Shadow Collective partnership is lucrative for both of us."

"Also dangerous. Moj delivered message—Maul wants personal meeting."

Vizsla's expression hardens. "That's concerning. Maul is former Sith. Not person to meet casually."

"Not optional. Refusing would be interpreted as disrespect."

"Then don't refuse. But prepare thoroughly. Maul respects strength and competence. Demonstrate both and you'll probably survive encounter."

"Probably isn't reassuring."

"It's honest. Maul is unpredictable. But he's also pragmatic—you're valuable supplier. As long as that value exceeds risk you represent, you're safe."

"What risk do I represent?"

"Unknown supplier with advanced technology and unclear loyalties. That's threat to someone building criminal empire. He'll want to either control you or eliminate you as variable. Make sure he chooses control."

Excellent. Meeting with psychopathic crime lord who'll decide whether to recruit or murder me. Galaxy's opportunities are consistently terrible.

That evening, Bo-Katan finds me reviewing account balance repeatedly because number still doesn't feel real.

"Three point seven nine million credits," she observes over my shoulder. "You're wealthier than most Mandalorian clans."

"Death Watch got eight hundred thousand. Seems fair."

"Pre Vizsla is pleased. Easiest money Death Watch ever earned." She sits beside me. "But you're on Maul's radar now. That's dangerous."

"Aware. Moj was very polite about delivering death threat if I refuse meeting."

"When?"

"After vehicle deliveries complete. Gives me time to prepare. Theoretically."

"How do you prepare for meeting Sith Lord?"

"Very carefully. With backup plans. And acceptance that outcome is largely beyond my control regardless of preparation."

She's quiet for moment. "You're not scared."

"I'm terrified. But terror doesn't change requirements. Forward is only direction even when forward leads to dangerous meetings."

"That's very Mandalorian philosophy. Maybe you're learning."

Despite everything, I laugh. "Learning to embrace probable death as unavoidable consequence of business decisions? That's definitely Mandalorian."

"We're rubbing off on you. Unclear whether that's good or bad for your survival probability."

"Probably bad. But at least I'll die wealthy."

"Small comfort."

"Better than dying poor."

We sit together reviewing numbers that represent both success and exposure. Four and a half million credits. Preferred supplier opportunity with galaxy's most dangerous criminal network. Personal meeting with former Sith Lord.

"Either most successful arms dealer in galaxy or dead man walking," I tell her. "Hard to determine which."

"Knowing you? Both simultaneously. You'll optimize profit right up until moment something kills you."

"That's probably accurate."

She takes my hand. "Try to make that moment later rather than sooner. Would be inconvenient if you died right now."

"Romantic."

"I'm Mandalorian. Our romance is pragmatic acknowledgment of mutual value." But she's almost smiling. "Also I'd miss you. But mostly the pragmatic value thing."

"Understood. I'll try not dying until at least after Maul meeting."

"Aim higher. Try not dying at all."

"Unrealistic goal but I'll consider it."

Night passes with mixture of satisfaction at wealth accumulated and dread at consequences approaching. Maul meeting looms like inevitable disaster I'm walking toward deliberately because refusing is worse.

Forward. Even when forward means facing psychopathic crime lord who'll decide whether I'm useful enough to keep alive.
