A piercing screech of brakes tore through the air, followed by the sound of skidding tires. Then, with a loud BANG, her car crashed into a sedan that had been driving normally in the southbound lane.
In that instant, the world fell silent.
The child who had run into the road stood frozen on the spot. He was only four or five and didn't understand what was happening. All he knew was that a car had nearly hit him, but then, for some reason, it had suddenly swerved and collided with another one.
Just then, the child's mother rushed out. She snatched him up and carried him back to safety, overjoyed at his narrow escape but also seething with fury. She gave his bottom several hard smacks.
