Old Mrs. Chapman and one of her daughters mumbled evasively. One moment, they claimed the medical records were missing; the next, they said she'd seen a folk healer who didn't keep records. Not even a three-year-old would have believed their excuses.
"Even a folk healer would write a prescription. You can't just grab random herbs—that's how you kill someone," Shane Thorne scoffed. The Chapman uncles could no longer sit still.
They weren't fools. They knew instantly that the old woman was lying. Besides, they hadn't heard a word about her being sick lately. 'She's just spouting nonsense,' they thought. 'This is ridiculous.'
"I threw the prescription out! Who keeps such unlucky things around?" Old Mrs. Chapman gave up on making excuses and decided to just play dumb.
Goldie Thorne couldn't suppress his rage any longer. He shot to his feet, ready to fight, but Frederick Thorne yanked him back down.
