Changfan leaned down to meet her gaze. Seeing her expression, the frost in his gaze thawed slightly. "I am not going to harm you," he said. "I am merely curious. Why were you unharmed after eating the Nine-Ring Grass?"
Shen Lang's mind raced. In an instant, it all clicked. 'He's trying to bait me. If I actually go along with what he's saying, I'll be dead with no place for a burial in the next second.'
She tugged at the corner of her tunic with a small hand, her eyes welling with tears. "Lord, if you don't believe me, then why did you bring me back? Wouldn't it have been simpler to just let that pack of hypocrites dispose of me?"
Changfan frowned slightly.
She continued her mock crying. "If you're going to accuse me of secretly eating the Nine-Ring Grass just because of some smell, then what about the fact that I can smell shit on those good-for-nothings? How do you explain that?"
